Check out this play. This one pissed me off. Kyren Williams isn't touched for nearly 10 yards down the field. Morris in their version of a 5-man front, too. The only thing that stopped the bleeding was McVay's jetlagged brain.

I understand that but I just didn't think west would contribute anything pass rush wise

Greenlaw definitely could have been better on that play but both West and White got washed out. White specifically was bad look at the OL players eyes he literally blocks out White while staring down Greenlaw

EDIT: Stats from the game back up the impact Halton had. The Reams gashed that interior D for an average of six yards per carry in that first half when West was getting pushed around. But when Halton replaced him in the second half, that average dropped to just two. DID ANY OF YOU WATCH THE SECOND HALF?

The crazy thing is West had a very good game rushing the passer. I don't get it

With all due respects, how many of those Kyren runs through the defense took place in the second half after Halton replaced West?

You'd like to see Greenlaw trigger faster and CJ West dominate that 1-on-1 with the center instead of getting sealed off from the play. Keion White ends up in a bad situation going against that combo block. Ideally, he attacks that guard and prevents him from getting to Greenlaw, but he's just in a bad spot. Can't really blame him. He's not built to do that but ends up in this situation due to this personnel/alignment.

Thompson played but sparingly. I think we can get to a decent enough place with Halton looking solid and if one of West/Thompson can develop. Mykell also will be a massive boost for our run D.

BUT at this point I would put a dominant DT as potential top potential trade piece if we're there at the deadline.

When Mykell returns his edge setting will free up the lbs more. I also think that Bosa was not split as wide and they even ran an inside stunt with him on run downs. Seemed like he was a bit more active on run tackles.

The way West gets moved off the ball causes stress. DJ Jones was probably my favorite run stopper during the Shanahan era on the interior D-line. And he was a rock, solid player in rotation and that's what I wanted to see from West this offseason. Could his pad level be inconsistent due to gassing out in games?

Thats one solution. Its still early, and like you said - maybe West or Thompson might develop. I'd give it at least one more game and one week more of practice to see what is up with West. Is it the typical sophomore slump? Then you keep him - but bench him like Walsh did to Jerry.

If not a sophomore slump and its a more serious issue -I'd like to see them poach a promising young DT from someones practice squad before a trade. I think the 49er brain trust has been really good at spotting football undrafted talent, and this is their chance to find a hidden gem without using draft capital.

DJ Jones or Buckner would be nice right now this is why you don't let players like that go. DJ wouldn't have broke the bank and we extend Armstead over Buckner . If we can't plug the middle here soon we need to make a trade. This team is to good to try and play this out hoping someone will step up

White & west could hold their ground better, sure, but this play doesn't happen if greenlaw trusts his eyes and goes. Now maybe that's the design and he's protecting against pa pass
