The 49ers may need to have a couple years where they don't make the playoffs and end up in a position to draft higher. Maybe they can get some more draft capital by trading older players that can help another team. Even then they have to hope that it's a good draft when they get those higher picks. It's harder to project now with players staying longer in college because of the transfer portal and NIL money.
We've had a few of those years sprinkled in. We torpedoed one of those drafts with Trey Lance.
Correct.
The Trey Lance fiasco cost us dearly.
That was a poor draft in general because of the Covid year. Many players took the year off and teams played partial schedules. The fact is if you draft late in each round eventually it will catch up to you. Sure you can still find good players later but the probability drops the later you pick. How may times have you been watching the drafdt and hoping a player is ther when the Niner spick only to see another team take him a few picks ahead of them. Then another one you want gets grabbed just before the Niners turn. It happens because other teams want the same players.
It caught up to the Patriots. The Chiefs are seeing it now. So are the Niners.
