Signing Osa Odighizuwa and drafting Gracen Halton was a pretty clear signal that management wasn't 100% sold on Collins. The competition is wide open on the interior and 49ers will move off of him quickly if lower drafted and undrafted players perform better than him. I don't think his 2nd round draft status will save him.
I disagree. Collins & West are run stoppers. Osa & Halton are your penetrating 3 techs. You need both & you need depth. Collins & Osa should be starting & Halton & West should be rotating in to keep the DTs fresh. One (maybe 2) of Valdez, Thompson & Eason should round out the DT unit. My money is on both Thompson & Eason making it. Seems the Niners are high on both & were surprised they weren't drafted.

Collins 'should' be a run stopper on base downs but he's not there yet. CJ West is the better player to pair next to Osa.

Then I can see Halton coming in on our nickle D next to Osa.

Collins might be a situational, backup behind West this year, But that's ok. We need depth and will be rotating guys in and out

For a 2nd round pick at DT, in year 2, being brought in for run stuffer and being a backup is not good. You are right about needing depth but the arrow is down.

Agreed. I think Collins was a major boom or bust pick. I remember when he was drafted there was a comparison to Chris Jones based off size & potential but had a long way to go to get there. Not a surprise Niners picked him since Chris Jones has been a terror, especially to the Niners, over the years. Probably saw that potential in him but we are nowhere near that at the moment.

He had enough minor setbacks last season that he really didn't get all the work he needed given how raw he was. Maybe he's just backup now but tht doesn't mean he can't get better.
he's been just one week training coming from an offseason surgery but he was really poor against the Titans,.... as big as he's, he was being pushed away play after play,.... really poor,... I hope he improves big way the coming weeks

but don't have too high expectations on him,... last year he was also meh,... the only remarkable thing he made was that forced fumble against the lambs that at last win us the game,.... but that was an isolate play, overall he was meh

both Gracen Halton and Bryson Eason played far better than him last thursday,... true that Eason didn't play too much against the Titans' starters but he showed a lot more than Collins

There is something to be said about his ability to bat down passes. He is good at that. If you ain't gonna get home on the QB, at least make it difficult on him to throw the ball.

He had a decent game against the colts (in my minds eye) but yeah.... Nothing else stood out much, especially for a 2nd rounder

Not worried about this guy at all. If anything the worry for Collins is the same for every 9ers player and that's injuries.
This is poor DL play in many ways. He's generating zero knockback and catching the double team instead of attacking his visual cue. Takes a horizontal step instead of a vertical step. Power zapped and ability to drop his weight immediately gone from that alone. Hands are outside. etc. Collins is negating his size and strength with s**t technique.

Not a strong start but hoping he improves through PS and TC. If not Vita Vea sounds so tempting.
To be fair, he had good games last year. He's still very young so he can still improve and develop. But I admit he didn't play good this first preseason game. Actually, Valdez the hulk played better than him

Valdez has plenty of his own issues as well(I'm not really a fan tbh), but check out the difference between him and Collins specifically in how they fire off the ball. Valdez is firing off the ball and attacking his cue; Collins is catching instead of attacking. There's no man alive that can catch 600+ pounds of OL coming at them and hold their ground. You have to keep your technique tight in the trenches, or you're going to get steamrolled.

He just seems so clunky and slow, only excuse I can think of is he's not taking preseason seriously which would be fine but he has no explosion

I think he has the explosive ability. I've seen it on tape. He had some wow reps in college. But you can't out-physical guys in the NFL. You need good technique, too.

Unfortunately, he had poor technique in college too, so it isn't too surprising. He would literally jump out of his stance and get his cleats off the grass at the snap in college. He needs a lot of development. A lot of time spent refining his craft.

Not taking it seriously. Then cut him.

Flashes don't cut it, it's disheartening that he's not continuing where he left off with two full camps in it's just 1 preseason game but it looks like he's back to square one at the moment. He has a lot of work to do, pad level and explosiveness is key because he doesn't really have much else going for him outside of his size.
