They might as well make those reviewable with a challenge. That ridiculous one infuriated me the most over all the other "missed" calls.

Btw, Williams is going to be really good.....like that pick.

He is never going to be a guy who relies on blazing speed to get around the corner, but he is by no means slow. He is a power rusher, like Aldon was, only slightly faster, but more raw. Once he polishes up his pass rush moves, he is going to eat tackles for lunch in this league.

I'm not sure that part. Aldon was faster off the snap with more bend and flexibility. Williams has more power.

I disagree. I think they're very similar athletes. Mykel and Aldon are similar in their explosiveness and bend, which isn't the greatest for either(good not elite). Neither of them is super twitched or bendy, but they're both very big, long and strong. The massive difference lies in the hand technique. Aldon was a master at his craft with his hand placement, timing and hand violence and keeping his hands sync'd with his feet. He came into the league with a refined long arm and double swipe; take away a tackle's hands and capture the corner with clean footwork. The only player with better hands coming out of college that I've studied was Nick Bosa.

If Mykel is going to excel as an edge rusher, it's going to look a lot like Aldon in that he's going to have to get good at softening the edge with his hands and marrying them with his footwork. He's never going to rocket out his stance and simply blow by tackles to their landmark, or get bendy and slip underneath punches. It's all going to hinge on the hands, working halfman and softening that corner.

I agree with Memphis9er

Ding ding ding. Aldon's had much better technique, but yeah, that rep reminded me so much of Aldon! Aldon was so nasty with the double swipe

big difference here is how Aldon reloads his swipe after the first one preventing the tackle from recovering while Mykel doesn't and allows the tackle to reset his hands. Also, Aldon was so good at priming himself to corner by leaning into the tackle after he beats the hands. His footwork is clean, and he immediately gets that inside toe pointed at the QB, which primes his hips for a straight path to the QB. Mykel definitely struggles with that and needs a lot of work there.

God, what Aldon could have been.

I was just re watching some Aldon highlights after reading your post. Man Aldon's hand work was unreal. They dam near look like the same player. Looking at the get off's it does look like Williams is faster off the ball. The point about his hips is excellent. Allowed him to close in on the qb a lot faster. Now I didn't meant to imply Aldon ever had bend and flexibility like Bosa. Do you know how much Saleh uses Williams on stunts and twists on passing downs like we used to do with Aldon?

I would love to see the 49ers start using Alfred Collins or CJ West like they did cowboy. He would regularly hold the offensive lineman, allowing Aldon to get to the quarterback much quicker.

yeah, bro, Aldon Smith's hands were insane, and coupled with his GODLY arm length of 35"+ arms, there was very little space for tackles to work with when they faced him. Mykel has a long way to go in that regard, but you can visibly see him working through the process of learning how to use his hands week by week. Every week he seems to get a little bit better, and that's the positive in this situation. There are some players who seem to be lost every single week despite acknowledgement of their weaknesses and never show any glimpses of the pass-rushing cogs spinning in their hands no matter how much they play(ie Eli Harold, Drake Jackson).

I don't know about the numbers of stunts that Saleh is dialing up, but from casual observations, it seems like he's done a good job of mixing things up on the DL. There seems to be a good balance of different fronts, blitzes, stunts, etc. They just really need the young guys to keep making strides as the year progresses in their 1-on-1 situations.
