Man, re-watching the week 1 run defense with Mykel Williams in the lineup is night and day difference. Those Seattle tight ends were getting no push at the point of attack and got bullied by him on a few reps. These same tight ends that you can see in the defensive line thread throwing Sam O, Keion White, YGM and Clelin Ferrell around a few days ago.

88 was killing the Niners' ends on Saturday

As much as I'd like to say if Mykel was there it'll be a totally different game, I'd give some credit to them improving from wk1 to divisional rd as well.

The final score exaggerates how much better they actually got.

But does reflect the increasing level of injuries to key players.

Yeah this dude wasn't affecting the outcome of that game lol. Seattle did that while losing an RB too.

That has no effect on the game

No doubt Seattle improved but it definitely would've been a different game. I think with the injuries we had we walked into this game with belief in ourselves hanging on by smoke and mirrors. The opening kickoff going back for 7 broke those mirrors.

If we were as healthy as Seattle going into this one maybe we still lose but we'd be able to weather the storm a lot more early on and I don't think our faith would be so badly shaken with our key guys around.

We probably pick up that 4th down with Kittle blocking instead of Tonges. Don't see Kittle fumbling either. Defense would be a whole of a lot better vs the run and forcing Darnold into actually putting the ball in danger.

But all we have are what ifs. But i'm eagerly waiting Bosa and Mykel coming back on our DL so we can fix the run D issues again.

I went back and watched his highlights from this season. Future is bright. He is a load as an edge-setter and inside rusher. Incredibly violent. Needs to work on his get-off, though. He's often the last DL to move after the ball is snapped.

This. Guy is definitely very violent & can throw guys around with ease. Excited for his future

Future star.

Stars get sacks...

Not apples to apples but Byron Murphy for Seattle had 0.5 sacks as a rookie in 14 games played and 9 starts. Suddenly in year 2 he had 7 sacks and is a critical part of that defense.

And speaking of that defense Leonard Williams had 3 sacks after playing 16 games as a rookie and starting 15. He had a similar jump and is another huge part of Seattle's defense.

Obviously Mykel has to deal with rehab so we'll see how quick his growth goes but just a reminder that some of these guys who don't rely on speed to rush may take more time but the odds are the sacks will come.

Byron Murphy is a DT, anything more than 3-4 sacks is impressive there...he also had 8.5 sacks his sr year in College.

Leonard Williams was the AP DROY and a 2nd year probowler he also had an 8 sack and 7 sack season in college.

Mykel Williams only managed to play 50% of the season before blowing out his knee, had just one sack for a DE....in college he played with a bunch of stars and managed 4.5, 4.5 and 5.0 sacks per season.

Sorry but I don't think it's apples and apples here. M.Williams was an avg pass rusher in college, he struggled with pass rush in the NFL and had his rookie season cut short with a significant season ending injury. He's going to have a hill to climb just to be ready for this upcoming season let alone have the opportunity to develop moves that were non existent when we drafted him.

I hope I'm wrong but he's Solomon Thomas 2.0. A reach for a guy who can only play the run.

Mykel Williams led Georgia National Championship team with sacks as a freshman. James Pearce finished the year with 10.5 sacks. Through the same week as Mykel played he had 1.5 sacks.

Mykel was showing more and more as a pass rusher before his injury. Thinking that a young player can't improve with more playing time is a stretch.

Even if you don't like the comparisons they were made simply because of your comment about stars getting sacks.

Since you're enjoying my comparisons lol, JJ Watt only had 2 sacks through 9 weeks as a rookie. Finished the year with 5.5. Rashan Gary 2 sacks as a rookie.

We've seen big ends start slow many times in the NFL and then turn into key defenders for their teams. Thinking Mykel can't be a star cuz he only had 1 sack through 9 games as a rookie isn't a solid take.
Mykel had bully strength and that's what this team needs more of. The plays he won, in both the run and pass game, were often due to pure strength and domination and that's something you like to see out of a young DL.
They Have Mykel as an "Edge" Setter for the 49ers and then Jump Inside during passing Downs. Bosa can both set the "Edge' and just be Pass Rush DE.
Mykel would have made a big difference. People forget a players effect is cascading as well.
Amazing how quick some fans are to say a player is a stud or a bust. Everyone should know that you can't judge a player on one season. Some colllege players just take longer to adjust. Williams came out after his junior year. They drafted him for his versatility and primarily for his run stopping. They also felt he could eventually become a decent pass rusher. He was improving every week even while he was being moved around the line.

I don't know if he'll ever be a top D lineman but at least give him a fair shot. We live in a world where everyone wants instant gratification and success.
