Better to trade him for a #2 (or a #3 and 5) than keep him as insurance and if lucky get a comp pick for him

With the Vikings signing Murray, I think that pretty much closes the door on a worthwhile trade return for Mac.
I know people think we could trade him when a QB inevitably gets hurt, but I don't think you'd be getting a worthwhile offer considering it would be a temporary solution for whatever team it is (in all likelihood).

Yes, the Vikings are off the table. Not sure they made the wisest long term decision. But Kyler's contract should be dirt cheap. I'm not sure he fits the scheme there.
Cardinals signing Minshew basically said, we are playing for the #1 pick in 2027.
Dolphins signing Willis, modest investment for possible high reward.
Jets trading for Geno....they're competing with the Cardinals for the #1 pick in 2027.
So, it basically leaves the Steelers. But with their Pittman and Dowdle signings, I think Rodgers is coming back.
The good news, with the 2027 QB draft class expected to be really deep, I think we can resign Jones to be our backup.
If the Steelers don't trade for him before the draft, I see Jones staying. The other possible scenario, a playoff team like the Cowboys, Broncos, etc loses their starter for the season.

Best case scenario, he's the 49ers back up QB for the 2026 season.

A lot of time to trade Mac Jones. Regardless of teams signings. Even though we need the picks, honestly it would be wise to hold onto Mac Jones as a back up for another year.

Agreed, also I can't wait for Kyle's next project(not counting rourke)

We pretty much should hold on to Mac at this point. All it takes is a major QB injury between now and early November and a team will be willing to give up a 2nd at least.

I think he gets traded to Pittsburgh. ARod is holding that team hostage. I think they bite….not for a 2nd but maybe a 3rd and a player.
