Honest question: should I quit?

When I start to get bummed, I think of it like owning stock. Nothing I do really matters to the valuation of the stock or the overall market. I only venture money I'm willing to lose, and winning in the market isn't going to materially change my life.

It's only entertainment and just not that serious. If you can't pull back a bit, then maybe you should bail.

That's just it — it's not entertainment to me anymore. Maybe if we had just won one of those damn Super Bowls when we had the chance I'd feel a lot differently right now but alas, feels like I've been a fan all these years for absolutely nothing.

A bunch of dumb Swifty fans who know jack about football and a bunch of Seattle bandwagoners who can't even name their current QB have gotten to enjoy Super Bowl wins. I—someone who has followed this team very closely every offseason, can name every position and actually explain formations and schemes—have enjoyed hindsight-worthless playoff wins that have ultimately resulted in zero rings.

Where's the reward for following this team? I have experienced none. I was born one year after Steve Young beat the Chargers.

Listen man, does it suck? Yes. But 20 years isn't that long in the grand scheme of things.

It took the niners 35 years to win their 1st; the Giants went 52 years before winning in SF; the Warriors had a 40 year gap before Steph won; and the Sharks still haven't won one yet after 34 years.

Sometimes it just takes a long ass time, because you need the perfect combo of talent, health, and luck. I was 8 the last time the niners won, so while I saw it, I didn't appreciate it, so I've mostly experienced heartbreak as a diehard.

If you're lucky enough to witness one title though, it'll wipe out all those years of misery in an instant. That, I can promise you.

The trick is to figure out how to be emotionally invested, but not take things personally.

Nothing I do has any direct impact on what happens on the field, so I don't take it personally. Does it suck if they lose, yes, but I don't let it effect my day to day life, same if they win.

lol I'm the OP of this thread and I made it at a very devastating moment.

I didn't quit on my fandom and never will. But I do learn how to see things with perspective.

I'm not paid to be a fan…because how hard I fan doesn't impact the game…at all. Sorry, "12s" your little SB win had nothing to do with loud you yell lol.

So when the team wins, it's not my personal victory. I can be happy about it of course but at the end of the day I'm not a better person or a winner myself if my team wins.

Likewise, if my team loses…that doesn't make me a loser. That wasn't because I didn't fan hard enough…or didn't buy enough merch.

So yeah…I'm just a 49er fan…but my wins and losses that really mean anything are the successes and failures in my personal life. Football losses sting for a moment but tomorrow I'll wake up thinking about something else.

I was so sure Brodie's team was going to beat the Cowboys in that NFCCG back in the 70's that I went to Golden Gate Park to throw the football around with my brother after halftime. Imagine my surprise when I came home and discovered they had lost. I said, "Are you kidding me?" and that was the end of it until Joe came along. I can't ever remember being so upset about a game that it interfered with whatever else was going on in my life. The only exception was maybe the 2012 Super Bowl where we lost our perfect record thanks to Harbaugh and Kaepernick. That one pissed me off for about 24 hours, and I still hold a grudge, but the only time that comes up is in this forum.

I think a big part of me just misses being 7-8 years old and simply caring about whether or not I could complete whatever video game level I was playing that day or week and had absolutely zero knowledge or care in the world about who won the Super Bowl or what the Super Bowl even was.

I miss those days. I'm 30 now. A little old to go back to those days unfortunately. Maybe I could take on a club or something? Maybe get into movies? Football clearly isn't it for me, not when it's just going to make me miserable. This franchise is going to beat the Red Sox' streak at this rate. I firmly believe February 11, 2024 was this franchise's last legitimate shot for a long, long time and I called it the night of.

Took me two weeks to recover from the Baltimore loss.
One week in 2019.
Two days in 2023.

Ironically the LA loss in 2021 hit harder than 2023 Chiefs bc I felt we had a legitimate chance against Cincinnati whereas vs the Chiefs or Ravens in 2023 I felt we were disadvantaged.

At this point with the current regime it's almost expected we're going to crap the bed. So I don't have high hopes therefore recovery time is shorter.

Overall I'm not as obsessed with the 49ers as I used to be, but I am obsessed with football season bc it passes my time and has become a yearly tradition. It's why my favorite time of the year is fall (Sept-Dec). Holidays, early nights, football season, etc.

...on to NASCAR. That guy from Elk Grove looks fast again this year.

If you didn't quit under TDon and Nolan, no reason to quit now and those teams literally only had F.Gore and that's it.

I don't live and die with thr Niners like I did when I had season tickets. As anyone that has tickets will tell you it's a bigger investment. Not just the cost but the time you spend traveling to the game and tailgating. I've been following football now for 71 years so I guess I always will. I don't like some of the rule changes and the way the game is played now but it's still enjoyable.

Bottom line is if your only reason for watching is to see them win a SB then there's a huge chance you will be disappointed since only one team wins every year. The fact that they've been to 8 and won 5 out of the 60 is pretty good. 34 of the 60 games have been win by just 7 teams.
