There are very, very few QBs that consistently elevate their game and stick a fork in the opponent when it's crunch time. Montana probably was the best there ever was at that. Probably better than Brady, Elway, Brees, Roethlisberger, Stabler ... all in the club of guys who could elevate their game when all the chips were on the table. I'm probably missing a few, but you get the point. So, I don't think Steve Young was that, which is no great insult since 99% of QBs are not. Young was special in another way in that he completely broke new ground. There were great athletic QBs who couldn't pass that well, great scramblers who could buy time but weren't elite athletes, but Young was the prototype (maybe even best in kind) of elite athletic QBs, who could flat out run and also pass beautifully. So, back-to-back, the Niners were blessed with two very rare talents at the QB position. You don't have to dislike one to like the other. Only Favre and Rogers come close as a tandem, and the Montana/Young years were far better than Favre/Rogers by comparison.

Randy Cross once said that Joe was like a race horse... he knows when it's Kentucky Derby...
The best thing about Joe is that no matter how great the opponents QB was, the same teammates of that opponent just knew that he was NO JOE !!!

Young's "peak" level of play, degraded team or not, was phenomenal.
Disparaging 1 QB with fairytales doesn't somehow make the other QB that much better or anything. Not sure why people always feel the need to rewrite history doing such.
Hes old enough to have watched it all go down, so he should know better. He has a weird hatred for Young
i like young very much. he is the second best qb in our teams history.... i just think at the time.. we would have been better off doing that trade and keeping joe. the mvp stuff was nice but then we gauged our qb by winning the big games.. when he pissed two in a row down his leg and proved jimmy johnson right when he said young could not win the big game. i was fine dumping him,. and i was not alone either. now. i like young.. and the team did him a huge disservice by ignoring the run game after ricky left. it was a disgrace to us and to young that for three years he was our best running back until we finally got terry kirby here to stabilize things a bit.
After the first or second year that Walsh left, i just felt that they didnt draft as well as they did when Walsh was HC. I dont think Walsh would have made Dexter Carter his first round pick, for example. That finally caught up to them in the later years of Steve's career.

I know this isn't new news but how surreal was it that Tom Brady was at "the catch" as a little boy and a picture proof to boot. Talk about foreshadowing. got dam.
Wow!

Dang. Episode 4 kind of takes away from my mental legendary status of Joe! So many injuries, awful games with 3 picks, getting pulled in the playoffs... wow! I see some similarities to the current 49ers QB situation

I recommend watching the new episode tonight to help kill time and also as a reminder that even Joe was not perfect

Wow!
Yup he's the chosen one prophesized in legends and we drafted Gio Carmazzi a literal goat farmer over the GOAT
