Not entirely. The model of the killer mobil qb was etched in stone for niner fans by Roger Staubach.

Pretty much the archetype for the modern day mobile pocket passer. (not the archetype for running/ rpo / zone read qb).

Scramble meister Fran Tarkenton had taken the vikes several times to the big show by 1979 too.

The precedent was there to follow for coaches who could make use of mobility.

lol Young was literally league MVP. 🙄

Charles Haley got traded after he threatened Jerry Rice. It had nothing to do with which QB could control him.

who cares about mvp.. when he could not win the big game. two years in a row. oh,, charles got traded cuz he peed on the car of tim harris among other things.. you keep joe and you keep lott.. major mistake... they could have kept charles under control

With Lott they kept going with the Bill Walsh philosophy that you get rid of a player one year early instead of one year late. Nobody would have traded the league MVP and kept a 37 year old QB instead. Young literally won us a SB in one of the two years Montana was on a different team. Suggesting that we sacrifice elite years from Young through the rest of the decade for Montana's final couple seasons is delusional.

The context of my post lies in his comments suggesting that that is a prerequisite. That was somewhat gone away from but is really taking off here today across the league. Never tried to suggest Montana was the 1st successful mobile QB. But again -- Bill listing it as basically a must that you seek out was plenty before his time.

If you have other coaches saying the exact same in the 1970's or before, please post.

Yea Bill was ahead of his time in unifying all aspects of pass attack. Actually, not really "ahead of his time" but just that he thought differently about it, and it turned out to be very successful.

he definitely designed in the "mobile" aspect of Joe into the wco. I think for Walsh a "mobile" qb also implied a "good footwork" qb.

First ep was free, but it looks like the rest will require a $4.99 per month Peacock Premium subscription. Depending on how frequent they release the episodes, you could just wait until they're all out and then sub for 1 month and watch the rest.

I'm not really clear on that. I got the impression you could see all the episodes for free if you are willing to wait and watch one each week. If you have the premium it sounded like you could watch all of them right now. They never make this stuff clear. They do everything they can to suck you in. All these new streaming channels make it sound like you are saving money over cable or sat but if you want to see everything that you watch you have to subscribe to several different ones. By the time you're done you're paying the same and still don't have all the channels.

unlike craig.. lott proved he could still play and when we lost to the raiders.. they had to bring lott over to the locker room to calm down charles who was about to kill steve young.. lott could still play.. that was a major f**k up. like i said.. you keep lott.. trade young. keep joe. we would have been forced to address the running back thing which was ignored for years, derrick thomas would have been a stud for us. never would have died.. charles and thomas. i drool at the thoughts of that.. the only reason why young won a super bowl is cuz we had to go spend a ton on getting him a defense which of course led us to salary cap hell. we lost two nfc title games in a row.. back then. that just did not happen. remember eddie saying.. this will never happen again. i would have gladly dumped young cuz i knew joe would have beaten the cowboys twice... then yes.. nothing wrong with grooming bono. we would have ran the same offense with him as we did with joe.

Lott still had some years in him but in all fairness, the Niners had to make a decision in the first year of plan B free agency. Nobody knew exactly how it would work out or how many player a would walk. Lott missed 5 games the previous season and 5 games the year before. The Niners wrongly thought that health issues were going to keep plaguing him.

Your opinion is coming from your heart, not your head. Lott had one more great year in him after he left. Young was a top 3 QB for the entire 90's decade. Montana was done by 1994.

lol @ saying he only won because he got defensive help. Young was league MVP and Super Bowl MVP that year. The Niners averaged 34 pts per game for the entire season. Deion was a big factor, but he got his first ring because of Young more than Young got one because of Deion.

If you honestly believe that riding Joe Montana until the wheels fell off and grooming Steve freakin Bono was the better strategy I don't know what to tell you…

Oh man,...cc must be Young,...pun intended. Young had a crap OLine and still balled out. The team was a shell of the teams that Joe had,...and I love Joe.

Young's "peak" level of play, degraded team or not, was phenomenal.

Disparaging 1 QB with fairytales doesn't somehow make the other QB that much better or anything. Not sure why people always feel the need to rewrite history doing such.

i like young very much. he is the second best qb in our teams history.... i just think at the time.. we would have been better off doing that trade and keeping joe. the mvp stuff was nice but then we gauged our qb by winning the big games.. when he pissed two in a row down his leg and proved jimmy johnson right when he said young could not win the big game. i was fine dumping him,. and i was not alone either. now. i like young.. and the team did him a huge disservice by ignoring the run game after ricky left. it was a disgrace to us and to young that for three years he was our best running back until we finally got terry kirby here to stabilize things a bit.

i saw us blow the lead to dallas in 1973 . the 1976 team was the best team that never went to a super bowl aside from the 98 team and 2011 team
