I know this isn't new news but how surreal was it that Tom Brady was at "the catch" as a little boy and a picture proof to boot. Talk about foreshadowing. got dam.

Another interesting thing is one of Joe's early comebacks at ND was when they trailed Clemson 17-7 against Steve Fuller and none other than Dwight Clark. Dwight didn't really even know who Joe was since he wasn't the ND starter.
We will never see another like him! I am just happy I had the chance to watch Joe Montana in his prime! The Bangles v Niners Super Bowl will always be etched in my memory.

He threw his share on INTs but he had an uncanny knack for rising to the moment and bailing out the team even when he had a bad game. That's what made him so great.

There are stat QBs and game QBs and there was no question which one Joe was.

I thought the same exact thing. Creepy.

From the drive commentary: "Great players aren't always great. But they're great when they need to be."

That was such a perfect line for Joe right after that near INT in the EZ.

Darn it so was I. Unfortunately I never married a super model.

No offense to Joe, but if Ronnie Lott couldn't keep Haley in check - NOBODY could.

The trade should be included on the TOP 10 worst trade ever..

The management and Seifert were more concerned on the condition of the trade that Dallas could NEVER trade Haley to the Raiders instead of looking at HOW Haley can make Dallas a complete team on the D-side of the ball..

.... and from what I remember, all we got was a 2nd rounder and a chance to SWAP 1st rounder if Dallas was drafting 1st..

Absolutely. Given Dallas's position after the 1991 season, its like trading Bosa to the Bengals or some other new playoff team on the rise.

The Dismantling of Bill Walsh's 49ers could be an episode of The Timeline.

1) The 1990 NFCCG
2) The rudderless 49ers of 1991- no Joe and adjusting to Steve
3) Haley Trade
4) The Return to Greatness of 1992 and 1993 or so we thought- Can't beat Dallas
5) Super Bowl or Bust Mentality
6) Letting Ricky Watters walk
7) Loss of Coaching talent
8) Front office miscues and going against Bill
9) Overtaken by Green Bay
10) JJ Stokes trade where the pick we traded ends up being Ray Lewis
11) Jim Druckenmiller, Dana Hall, and all the other poor picks
12) Ironman Jerry Rice gets injured
13) Eddie gets busted and the transfer of ownership

So many things

Haley had become such a problem that he had to go. He was later diagnose with a personality disorder that he now takes medication for. I had a personal experience with Haley in a bar and it was a little scary. He intimidated many of the players and coaches to the point that they had to make the difficult decision to trade one of the best pass rushers in team history. The peeing incident and masturbation during team meetings were the tipping points.

That had to be an agonizing decision for Seifert in particular since he was a defensive guy.

Haley absolutely had to go. I was okay with trading him. The team didn't have the resources to manage Charles. Particularly once Ronnie Lott was gone. It was just where they traded him.

Indeed. Joe wasn't a big numbers guy at Notre Dame, but could make plays and was super clutch. Bill was fantastic at seeing traits in a player that he thought would be good for his system (in Joe's case being able to throw on the move) and be able to develop it.

A lot of times, I think Kyle gets like that. It's partially why he locks in on certain players so much because of that trait- some of the very players people slam Kyle for wanting. I get it. Bill just won early, so all was forgiven.

Indeed. Although there were times that I think Joe played perfect, it was more of, how he would play when we absolutely needed it. It would be hitting Emmanuel Sanders, scoring on the final drive of the 2019 season so it doesn't even come down to Greenlaw's clutch tackle, or executing the Titans on December 23rd. That part is the hardest thing to find and you can't exactly ensure you will get that. Brady wasn't anywhere near that player at Michigan. We were so lucky.

I do think we have a few of those players on our team now. A lot of the guys showed me something in the Tennessee game. If Trey is that guy, we're getting a Super Bowl win before his rookie deal is up. I just hope he can take on some of Jimmy's traits (get rid of the ball quicker, and hit those short to intermediate passes) with the difference being that he will go outside of the numbers, can live on his arm if the run game isn't happening, and can make a play when there isn't one to be made.

I can't wait for the final 4 episodes. It's amazing the hits we see Joe taking. So many would be illegal today.

JJ STOKES - I just wanted to clarify the trade for this guy, did you all know that it was BILL WALSH who told Carmen Policy to " DO WHAT YOU MUST " in order to land JJ Stokes... and that's exactly what we did..

HALEY - I didn't mind trading Haley, but the fact that it was to NFC team who was obviously on the rise, the management just did not take Dallas too seriously as a team.. when we traded for Fred Dean in 1981, I remember reading how San Diego just handed Bill Walsh and the team what was missing... " A PASS RUSHER " .. and 20 years later, we did the same thing only to THE SAME CONFERENCE...

SEIFERT and THE MANAGEMENT - the continuance of drafting mediocre players really paved the way to us becoming an average team... we didn't plan for the future (IMO) after winning back to back Super Bowl... we drafted Dexter Carter because Seifert wanted a Dave Meggett type of back instead of drafting a young LB like Darion Conner or SS LeRoy Butler..

BRYANT YOUNG - did we not land him due a trade w/the RAMS ??

You wouldn't know it at the time, the way he's crying like a little baby like they didn't call roughing the passer.

nice.. thanks for the heads up ..gotta watch it
Interesting that 6 of our 1st 7 SB births had mobile QBs.
After selecting Montana, Bill Walsh remarked delightedly, "Yes, that's the guy we wanted. You hope for it (the player still being around) to happen, it's just something you calculate. It wasn't a grand gesture. All clubs do it. It's just that sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't."

As for Montana's prevailing rap that he was erratic in college, Walsh dismissed it quickly. "I don't go for things like that. It isn't important to me. The pros are different from college. In the pros you can spend more time coaching a kid."

"I now feel much better about our quarterbacking and receiving. I was satisfied with the draft, especially since we didn't have all our picks. Getting both James Owens and Montana has to be satisfying."

"Joe has the prerequisites we're looking for," Walsh said later when asked why he had passed on his former Stanford quarterback Steve Dils. "The difference between him and Dils was certainly not effectiveness. Steve was the leading passer last year and it's pretty hard to put that down. The difference you always look at is size and mobility.

"That's true at any position, including quarterback. When you compare the size and mobility, (6-2, 200), Montana compares favorably with any quarterback in the country, except maybe the top two (Simms and Fuller were both taken in the first round along with Washington State's Jack Thompson). That's the prerequisites you look for."
....and this was 1979. Talk about a man certainly ahead of his times!

First ep was free, but it looks like the rest will require a $4.99 per month Peacock Premium subscription. Depending on how frequent they release the episodes, you could just wait until they're all out and then sub for 1 month and watch the rest.
