No offense to Joe, but if Ronnie Lott couldn't keep Haley in check - NOBODY could.
The trade should be included on the TOP 10 worst trade ever..
The management and Seifert were more concerned on the condition of the trade that Dallas could NEVER trade Haley to the Raiders instead of looking at HOW Haley can make Dallas a complete team on the D-side of the ball..
.... and from what I remember, all we got was a 2nd rounder and a chance to SWAP 1st rounder if Dallas was drafting 1st..
Absolutely. Given Dallas's position after the 1991 season, its like trading Bosa to the Bengals or some other new playoff team on the rise.
The Dismantling of Bill Walsh's 49ers could be an episode of The Timeline.
1) The 1990 NFCCG
2) The rudderless 49ers of 1991- no Joe and adjusting to Steve
3) Haley Trade
4) The Return to Greatness of 1992 and 1993 or so we thought- Can't beat Dallas
5) Super Bowl or Bust Mentality
6) Letting Ricky Watters walk
7) Loss of Coaching talent
8) Front office miscues and going against Bill
9) Overtaken by Green Bay
10) JJ Stokes trade where the pick we traded ends up being Ray Lewis
11) Jim Druckenmiller, Dana Hall, and all the other poor picks
12) Ironman Jerry Rice gets injured
13) Eddie gets busted and the transfer of ownership
So many things
Haley had become such a problem that he had to go. He was later diagnose with a personality disorder that he now takes medication for. I had a personal experience with Haley in a bar and it was a little scary. He intimidated many of the players and coaches to the point that they had to make the difficult decision to trade one of the best pass rushers in team history. The peeing incident and masturbation during team meetings were the tipping points.
That had to be an agonizing decision for Seifert in particular since he was a defensive guy.
Haley absolutely had to go. I was okay with trading him. The team didn't have the resources to manage Charles. Particularly once Ronnie Lott was gone. It was just where they traded him.

We will never see another like him! I am just happy I had the chance to watch Joe Montana in his prime! The Bangles v Niners Super Bowl will always be etched in my memory.
He threw his share on INTs but he had an uncanny knack for rising to the moment and bailing out the team even when he had a bad game. That's what made him so great.
There are stat QBs and game QBs and there was no question which one Joe was.
Indeed. Joe wasn't a big numbers guy at Notre Dame, but could make plays and was super clutch. Bill was fantastic at seeing traits in a player that he thought would be good for his system (in Joe's case being able to throw on the move) and be able to develop it.
A lot of times, I think Kyle gets like that. It's partially why he locks in on certain players so much because of that trait- some of the very players people slam Kyle for wanting. I get it. Bill just won early, so all was forgiven.

From the drive commentary: "Great players aren't always great. But they're great when they need to be."
That was such a perfect line for Joe right after that near INT in the EZ.
Indeed. Although there were times that I think Joe played perfect, it was more of, how he would play when we absolutely needed it. It would be hitting Emmanuel Sanders, scoring on the final drive of the 2019 season so it doesn't even come down to Greenlaw's clutch tackle, or executing the Titans on December 23rd. That part is the hardest thing to find and you can't exactly ensure you will get that. Brady wasn't anywhere near that player at Michigan. We were so lucky.
I do think we have a few of those players on our team now. A lot of the guys showed me something in the Tennessee game. If Trey is that guy, we're getting a Super Bowl win before his rookie deal is up. I just hope he can take on some of Jimmy's traits (get rid of the ball quicker, and hit those short to intermediate passes) with the difference being that he will go outside of the numbers, can live on his arm if the run game isn't happening, and can make a play when there isn't one to be made.
I can't wait for the final 4 episodes. It's amazing the hits we see Joe taking. So many would be illegal today.
