On the other 3 points, it all made sense, hopefully kinlaw will develop nicely, but again, we had the second best DT in the league and we let him go because he cost 4 M more than armstead? It looks like lynch and shanahan sabotaged our future chances with 1 dreadful choice.

That 4M saved could be Kyle Juszczyk. I loved Buck too. That stung. But big picture Kinlaw + Aiyuk + Juice > Buckner

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Armstead's, I have confidence that he'll be better in 2021, especially when Bosa is back, you have to figure without Nick and Dee, we only had AA and Hyder rushing on the EDGE, Kinlaw, Jones, Givens & Street inside, I'm not even counting Ansah, Jordan or Willis on the EDGE, they hardly did much, especially Ansah. Daniels could be a diamond in the rough, could end up as the starting NT IMO, we should, IMO, keep 10 DL on the 53 to begin 2021, Armstead, Bosa, Hyder(If re-signed), Blair(If re-signed), Ford(If he takes a pay cut), Kinlaw, Givens, Daniels, then draft a EDGE early, and an IDL in the mid-late rounds to compete with Street. I don't see DJ Jones back, I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I like what we have in Daniels & Givens, two UDFAs, who both can play the NT spot IMO, also if we get Bosa back, plus another EDGE plus Hyder, we can use AA more inside like we did in 2019. I'd let Ansah, Jordan, Thomas walk, I'd bring back Jordan Willis on a 1yr deal for minimum for camp, let him battle it out, he did show some when he played. Again, I think Jones walks, he may get a good offer elsewhere, I wouldn't pay him more than $2M a yr to be honest. Maybe the Jets sign him, depends on Saleh, and who he likes/wants with him, I'm assuming Sherman is NYJ bound, maybe K'Waun(I hope he stays though, but not sure the 49ers will justify paying a Slot CB $8M+ a yr when they paid Sherm $9.05M a yr, same with the idea of Verrett getting $10M+ a yr, I don't see that, not here anyway, plus 1yr of being healthy doesn't amount to that kinda pay day, but again AA got $17M a yr, so who knows just saying with the cap going down). As for Hyder, I think he sticks with Kocurek.

But, we're likely looking at 3-4 comp picks for the 2022 draft, Sherman will be at most a 5th due to the 10yr accrued seasons rule, Tartt likely in the 5th range if he gets what Ward got, Jones would be 6th-7th rd range, the 4th would be someone like K'Waun or Coleman, likely another mid-late rd pick, luckily we'll have 3 3rd's from losing Saleh & Mayhew(1 in 2021, 2022, & 2023).

Yep, in the big picture, we weren't paying Buckner $21M a yr, like I said, he reportedly turned down $60M+ GTD from us in 2019. I'll take Aiyuk, Kinlaw on cheap rookie deals for the next 3-4 yrs, and Juice back, plus we needed money for Kittle, Warner, and now Trent, who I do believe will be back.

Only reason armstead was good last year is because we were loaded in the d line (buckner + bosa) and on a contract year.

During that same season he had almost the same amount of sacks (10) as in his other 5 seasons combined (12,5).

I really dont get this decision. To me it compares to choosing alex smith with the first pick, letting harbaugh go, nate clements fa signing, having kyle williams returning after a fumble or lawrence philips avoiding aeneas williams. It is a decision that set us back for years, because, simply put, you cannot trade away a guy that talented and that young, just to save 4 freaking M in order to pay another mediocre guy who had 1 good season of the 6 he played.

I prefer buckner over everyone on this team except the other 3 I mentioned before (bosa - warner - kittle)

Those were the only 4 guys who should have been locked up for good. the rest are all replaceable

You are pointing out like 4 M is a huge deal when we are paying some guys like ford, armstead, garoppolo, richburg and ward way more than that.

cut your losses there, and use the money to keep your best players around. It should have been a simpler and wiser decision

What's not to get? Yes, to that point Buckner had a better career, but Armstead was quite a bit better in 2019. Are you saying Buckner didn't benefit from the same dynamic?

They paid less to the guy who'd just had a MUCH better season.

We may not have to redo Jimmy if we can get Dee & Richburg to take pay cuts all the way down to the league minimum of $1.075M, also we could get by without redoing Ward and/or AA. My hope is the cap comes closer to $195M, which would mean only Jimmy would be a candidate to have his deal redone, but it looks like he may not at all, at least if what Lynch said is 100% true.

I also have guys re-signed for camp purposes.

Something on June 1 cuts, you don't get the money until June 2nd, and some have mentioned Post June 1, and sign our FAs on June 2nd, that won't happen, it's never happened, the only occasion was this past offseason, the Bengals didn't sign Trae Waynes until late in the offseason, but only because of COVID-19, and they insisted on him passing a physical from their doctors, no 3rd party. Plus you need your guys for OTAs, Mini-Camps, etc... So this WILL NOT happen.

It would be helpful to have a list of important players leaving under your plan.

I really appreciate your detail post.

I feel good reading this plan. The starters leaving are Tartt and Sherman. We already have T Moore to start at safety along with Ward. At outside CB, we will have Verrett and Mosely, and Spoon. We can add depth through the draft.

We also have quite a number of guys leaving at the DL, but those are 2nd stringers only. We will still have Bosa, Armsted, Hyder, Kinlaw, Blair...Ford.

Basically will be able to compete for Champions. Staying healthy is the key though as always.

Thank you so much for putting this together.
The fact is Armstead has to play his role to be successful. That is playing edge on early down and move inside on third downs. That's how he dominated in 2019. He still created a ton of pressure this year. Blind fans only see sacks as a metric for DL performance but there's much more than that.
Yes Buckner is the better player and therefore got the better contract, but the gap separating him from Armstead is not that abbysmal as random fans believe it to be. I don't think the defense would've been much better if you kept Buckner and let Armstead walk in FA, would've been the same but with an even tighter cap space and without a promising young rookie to develop.
Will Kinlaw ever be Buckner? Maybe not. Fans put unfair expectations on a rookie playing a difficult position to do the college-pros jump because he got picked with the Buckner pick. Since day 1 of training camp Kinlaw admitted his pass rush technique was raw but the sky was the limit for his potential.
So, it was a good move. And whoever thought Kinlaw would become Buckner as a rookie should learn football. This is not Madden.

I'd follow this plan. But letting go Jimmy G, Weston and Ford and use those savings on cheaper replacements wether from the draft or cheaper FA. It would be sickening to be tied with Jimmy G with more guaranteed money

If you think Armstead sucked you clearly need to learn more about this game. It's not that difficult.

You are correct, but I don't agree armstead sucked. Armstead is not worth what he is getting paid, Buckner is!
