By the new league year he's 38 and we just can't keep kicking this can down the road forever. You got to have a long term plan at LT. Probably need to invest in it with the draft or free agency. I'm fine with 2 more years. Of which you probably get a good 1 out of him. We can't pretend like he plays until 45 though. Like they have been doing.

I dont think thats what they are doing i think once he retires we will invest in a high draft pick.

They did not.

Yes, the bears defense was ass. lol
How is this going to work out? We cant pay a 38 year old off his gimpiest season ever 40m bucks. And yet the nflpa forbids taking dollars off the contract even if the player agrees. So i don't see a contractual solution. Does extending really help? Im not sure. Was trent underpaid the last few years? Maybe we can make the catch up payments if so but it doesnt resolve the 2026 salary situation.

Release, release + re-sign (procedural), or a restructure are our options.

Trent's been paid his worth - top tier money for a HOF career. $40M is just not viable. He's in the $20M-$25M range including incentives given his age and injury history. I don't think he'll find anything better in the FA market. Hence why I think the team is willing for him to release, check his market, and re-sign him.

This doesn't make sense.
Our options are limited.

Pretty much he goes or we give in to his demands.

Depends on whether or not we can get him to come down from whatever heights he is demanding and meet us somewhere closer to the middle.

Nah. When Staley retired, they bought Trent. They'll do the same thing. Kyle isn't drafting and developing a LT.

They drafted and developed Mckivits pretty nicely instead of breaking the bank on McWhiffy
They only got really lucky with the trade for Williams. He went for a way below market value trade. Are we gonna get that lucky again with a trade for a top LT?

We have known for a few seasons now that Williams is declining and at playoff time he has been injured. Not his fault, but he is old now. Older people get hurt easier and dont recover as fast. I know cause I am old. We need to draft a replacement this year and if he sits behind Trent all season and learns great. If Trent goes down again we have him get some experience. But we need a surety there at LT now.

He's too old to have any leverage.
the 49ers show all of us how serious they are about trying to catch the rams and hawks. If they sign him they aren't serious about it. If they don't sign him they are.

I don't agree. So we just gonna roll Austin Pheasants out there to protect our 50 million dollar qb? Or do you have a rookie or FA in mind to replace TW.

The way I look at it is look where we stand compared to the rams and hawks. We are old and slow and we are not going to the SB next year. Or probably the year after. So if we are gonna do this right why not let Trent go? Better than re negotiating with him again. And personally if I were trying to catch the rams and hawks I'd move off the other old guys too. Kittle, juice, CMC, and I'd see if Purdy was worth anything to anyone else after next season. Reset the whole clock,

No one had the Seahawks in a Super Bowl two years or one year ago. No one knows. Our ability to draft major A+ players will be more telling than what we do or don't do with Trent. The Seahawks pulled ahead due to stacking some really good drafts. We will need to do the same and at a higher clip.

I can't imagine they just let him walk
We don't want to lose him and it would suck but we can't sign him to some horrendous awful contract. He's 38. Period. Man I love the guy, and we would need to work it out if he goes but do they have the balls to not get trapped in a sick contract and let him walk?

This should have been in prep for at least a year. Again, poor planning by John and team.

Don't we do literally every negotiation this way? Start off low and work from there?

They've restructured his salary several times already so it's not like they haven't addressed this. The problem is when you restructure you still have to pay eventually and that time has arrived. This happens to nearly every team when they keep pushing the money down the road.

And you know the likely hood of them reaching for a LT in the 1st rnd if they move on from him now out of desperation is extremely high and we've seen how thats worked out in the past.
