Ridiculous line of thought. Young was the NFL MVP in 1992. Keeping him on the bench because of Montana nostalgia would've been irresponsible. Also, Young was 31, and had been the backup for 5 years. How long did you want him to wait? In 1992-93-94, all years Montana was still playing, Young won the MVP twice, was first team All-Pro all 3 years, and won SB MVP. You wanted to keep him benched for Montana in his last years?

Yes Steve was Hall of Fame. The real f**k up the Front Office did was trade Haley to the freaking Cowboys of all teams. If we had Haleyz we probably are saying Young was just as good as Joe.

Yeah, Siefert was moron for trading him to Dallas. Ended up costing us probably two Super Bowls.

Losing Deion was worse. I think that cost us another 2 SBs. Niners made the right move with Young. We won another SB and Steve won 2 MVPs in that time. What did Joe do ?

Joe with that team - I think we could have won two more Super Bowls.

You have no idea. That's called letting nostalgia cloud your judgement.

What happens if we traded away Young instead and Joe continues to deal with injuries missing key games?

You're acting like Joe went on to play for 6+ more seasons starting every game.

Class guy. Preferred Montana, but how lucky are we to have had them both?

Seattle is not moving on from whining about the outcome from this game. They lost, get over it.
But hey, if they want to keep b*tching instead of preparing for the eagles, feel free Pete. They seem to be seriously underestimating their opponent and already be looking for that rematch with the Niners.
Looking forward to seeing how that plays out.

There were a lot of people who were Montana fans, not 49ers fans. I remember some woman calling KNBR and saying that she hoped Young would break his arm so he couldn't play. The radio host chewed her out and then hung up in her.

Some of them even became Chiefs fans after Montana was traded, then tried to return to the 49ers after Montana retired. I told a couple people, "Don't pretend to be a Niners fan, you never were one. Stick with your Chiefs."

Super Bowl XXIX was my favorite ever, because it justified my support for Steve against the haters.

Young still bleeds red and gold too, he loves watching the Niners return to glory.
I really have a hard time understanding how any niners fan could dislike him.

Haley was cancerous in the locker room.

Yeah, but why trade to Dallas of all teams. Why not the the browns? They should have got him the help and been patient. That s**t cost us 92 and 93. If Dallas doesn't have Haley they would not have been as good period. Still contenders, but not as good. That's like trading Bosa to the Packers or Seattle.

Yeah, trade him out of conference or something. But, no it had to be Dallas, who we faced in the NFCCG it seemed like every year.

Does anyone know what was Seifert's reasoning for trading Haley to Dallas? Was he senile or what? I wasn't old enough to remember.

Seifert didn't trade him, Policy and Eddie D did, and it was because he was a menace in the locker room. He was in dire need of bipolar medication, but wasn't diagnosed. He used to bully and attack people regularly. He would masturbate in front of teammates in the locker room while talking about their wife, he crapped on a position coaches desk, and the final straw was when he threatened Jerry Rice. I don't blame them at all for trading him, but its a shame he couldn't be controlled after Ronnie Lott left.

He could have done all the s**t with someone else. It is what it is - Joe will always be the hero and Young the villain.

I understand the sentiment then, but not now. Walsh even said to many players he only wants their best years and will trade them when they've only got one or two good years left. That's literally what happened with Montana.

Sure, Steve wanted to start. Any player worth a darn should have the fiery competitiveness. But ultimately he's not the one who decides who plays; that's the coach. The hate on Young here is unwaranted. You should be directing it to the man himself, Bill Walsh.

Or, George Siefert who ultimately traded Montana to make way for Young. But, your probably right I should be directing my hate to Walsh. Still, I never liked Young for his role in all of this.

Seifert didn't trade anyone. It was ownership and Carmen Policy. Eddie D had to decide between Montana and Young, and actually picked Joe initially. In 1991 he had a trade in the works with the Chiefs to move Young to KC for Derrick Thomas, but it fell through while ironing out details. He got into an argument with the Chiefs GM and they called it off.

Then they ultimately came to their senses and let Montana walk after spending 1992 backing up Young while he won MVP.

Sorry, man - it's the way I feel.

this makes no sense tbh

if there's someone you should be mad at it's bill walsh. he traded for steve and then promised him he'd start. being upset because a player wants to play is, odd...

I know it maybe odd, but it's just how I felt at the time and even as time has passed, I still have the same strong feelings about it.

Didn't you recently divulge that you are 26?

No it was you. I think it was the Warriors thread. Folks thought you were pretty young based on your posts and you responded that you were 26 and they were surprised . You may have been joking, but you said you were 26.
