3 dudes go down before pads go on and it doesn't even phase the group.

LDE/W9: Samson Ebukam; Drake Jackson & Kemoko Turay
2i: Javon Kinlaw; Hassan Ridgeway
3T: Arik Armstead; Robert Nkemdiche (Kalia Davis)
RDE/W9: Nick Bosa; Jordan Willis, Kerry Hyder & Charles Omenihu

It also sounds like Willis, Hyder and Omenihu are all working inside as well. Love this group!

This is why you can never have too many dlinemen.

Kinda the point people have been making for awhile, right?

Totally. And it's good the FO has a great eye for that talent and there happens to be dudes like Hyder, Key, Willis, Omenihu, Nkemdiche, Rideway, etc. always available.

When they sign a guy, I pay close attention. Odds are it's going to be a legit player for us.

Agree 💯%, and I think Kyle nuking his entire offensive coaching staff *and* special teams coach - he's looking for the next offensive coaching genius. I.e. the next Bobby Turner, Bobb McKittrick, Mike Holmgren, Jerry Glanville that can give him a player scouting and development advantage just like Kocureck does for his defense.
If you've been paying attention, you may have heard some of us reference the plugger/overlapper role in the wide 9. Somebody asked me about it, so I made this spiffy gif to help explain what it is, and why it's imperative to the success of rushing as a group, creating 1-on-1s and protecting those huge gaps inherent to the wide alignment. Keep in mind this is only for money downs ie obvious passing downs where the 49ers are in their double 4techs turbo front.

There are 3 roles:

  • Layer rushers - Aggressively rush from edge without allowing the QB to break contain. Focus on not rushing past the QB's landmark. We know a special player like Nick Bosa gets extra flexibility from Kocurek with the 2-way goes.

  • 2 way-go IDL - Biggest beneficiary of the group. He aggressively rushes in either the A gap or B gap. Again, don't rush past QB depth. Arden Key was amazing in this role last year as he capitalized big time on the 1-on-1s with the 2-way go rushes.

  • Overlapper/plugger - Most selfless IDL role. He essentially sacrifices himself as he attacks both center and guard and focuses on 1) plugging the A gaps so the QB can't escape up the middle 2) Overlapping and wrapping to the lane of any teammate who may have gotten out their lane. Who is designated the overlapper? It's almost always the IDL on the zone side of the OL's pass protection call.

A tough decision to make here with such good depth at DE.
Bosa, Drake, Ebukam, Omenihu are locks imo

Willis, Hyder, Turay are where a decision needs to be made. I don't think Barrett is making it. Armstead is a full time DT so let's not include him.
So of Willis, Turay and Hyder, pick two. Before preseason, I thought Willis would be the odd man out. He seems to have had a good preseason. I like Turay for his speed rusher physique which can be useful for line stunts. Hyder has had one good season to his name, 2020 when he was a 49er.

They'll most likely keep all 11. But if they cut one on talent it'll be Hyder IMHO. Willis plays inside and outside and on ST. Kemoko Turay is just too talented and adds a speed element opposite of Bosa.

Hyder is older and probably could be pushed to the PS for a call-up upon injury. Also, they seem to be cutting veterans right away even after good camps (Dennard, Nkemdiche, Tanner, etc.). Hyder could be next.

What a great breakdown of an awesome concept with all of its elements.
Really neat Hero, Thanks. Pretty obvious what Lovie used to counter the wide 9s….run the ball and it worked great.

Good plan without Armstead and sadly Jones. Hopefully Armstead /Kinlaw can hold it down.

Lots of things work great against 2/3/4th stringers
There has to be a team needy of DL that we can make a trade with.

If the guys we let go hit the open market that needy team probably won't get any of them.
