How can a four win team be overhyped
[ Edited by Young2Rice on Jun 1, 2019 at 2:35 PM ]
Last year was a complete wash due to the Jimmy G injury. Whatever happened after that didn't matter whatsoever because our season was already over

This year Media and fans are expecting either another sub .500 season or MAYBE they'll be playing for a playoff spot in December (if healthy ). That's not really "hype" if you ask me

That team had ZERO expectation. Maybe not zero, but no Niner fan had aspirations of a NFC powerhouse.

Vegas knows most people are bearish on the 49ers, so no need to make the over/under 10 wins this year if the upside is only so much and the risk is still there.

Better for Vegas to lose some money on the Niners this year, and maybe next year their over/under will be more accurate.

This year? Not at all.

The amount of dissenting voices suggesting the 49ers are better than a 6-8 win team are rather few. It's hard to find members of the media who are confident in the team the way the confident Niner fan is. Hell, even a bunch of Niner fans aren't "sold" on Jimmy, Kyle, Lynch, etc....so how tf is anyone getting the impression that this team is overhyped?? LMFAO.

Looking at the TV schedule this year, the 49ers are getting LESS prime time games (esp. Sunday Night) compared to last year. Cautious perhaps, but it seems like the Niners need their 10+ win season before they can be trusted.

Here's the fascinating thing:

People (haters) are banking on the 49ers not being a great team around Jimmy Garoppolo - either he can't stay healthy and/or he isn't good enough in their eyes. While I don't believe either are true, it's a legitimate argument to be had.

If Jimmy proves to be healthy and as good as he has shown when he's comfortable, then the 49ers are *significantly* more dangerous than the team we were fielding last summer. We have improved significantly on the edge, solidified the LB position, and should have at least as good if not a better secondary. On offense, we bring back Matt Breida who by himself I think most would be content with. But now we have Tevin Coleman AND Jerick McKinnon that we absolutely did not have last (regular) season. That's gonna be a problem whether people want to believe it or not.

As for the WR/TE situation, you have to believe that improved too. A lot is riding on Deebo Samuel becoming a better receiver in short order than Pierre Garcon has been for the Niners. Goodwin is a push, Pettis needs to be more consistent/healthy, but otherwise you have to think the WR position has improved. The addition of Toilolo at TE will allow the Niners to feature more creative 2 and 3 TE sets like how Shanny used with the Falcons.

So again, the roster is largely improved on paper, and is at least going to be as healthy as last year if not healthier.......the only thing holding the team back is this idea that Jimmy is not a good QB.

It's so f**** tiring as a Niner fan having to deal with this crap. In both years, regardless of QB the offense never started out great......and I'm putting that blame squarely on the skill positions and a chunk of the OL much more than the QBs, whether Hoyer, CJ, Jimmy, Mullens. It's hopefully time the offense as a whole starts firing out from the gate.

I don't know about the rest of you, but the eye test for Jimmy games 1-3 (even the Vikings game) showed more of a real QB than Mullens ever have, and even our prior golden boys #11 and #7. The gap between this supposed "much better" Jimmy in 2017 and the 2018 Jimmy wasn't huge.....

Also, Jimmy got hurt on a freak injury. I'd be much more concerned if Jimmy took a semi-hard hit and was out just like he was after 2 games with the Patriots in 2016. The starting QB ACL squad in the NFL includes Wentz, Watson in recent years, and even the god himself, Brady.

I want the Niners to be underhyped for the sake of allowing the team to perform better and surprise people. But in my mind, I have the most confidence in the Niners since 2012/2013.

I'll take that all the way to the death.

Really nice post JT and add on Zealot's WISH.

A couple other things:

Two of the most important new starters are Joe Woods and kocurek. Listen to their interviews, look back at films of their teams as DCs, when they were winning, and you see two really talented guys. Now we have a LB coach, a DL coach, and a DB coach. And if we come out of the gate upside down, in short order we will see one of the two new guys move into DC slot and call the plays. Actually, I bet kyle keeps saleh as DC and one of the other two call the D sets.

Aside from no starting QB after part of game 3, we also had no JET, NONE. So in addition to our FR QB returning, so will a starting RB. Also we just drafted a pair of WRs/RBs/TEs. Add that to Au jus, kittle, Toilolo, (and i think Kaden), plus Brieda, pettis and Kyle will have so many targets for JimmyG it will be embarrassing.

OL, still needs a starting OG, but person and Laken have played together now 1 full yr. Richburg, injured all yr gutted it out and now he is healthy. DBs...we had one... Sherm and he still limped altho he covered everyone who came near. Now Healthy. T.Moore....out of his college position where he excelled, is now back at S ...huge improvement.

Solomon...out of position all yr....saleh promises to keep him inside. Huge improvement.

Mullie...UDFA, not even drafted...no experience, yet he comes out after CJ, and tears it up with no OL help, and only kittle to help catch the ball. The guy is a whiz bang #2. We are fixed at QB ...that really seems odd.

And this is ALL in addition to your lengthy list. Man if a 9er fan isn't excited about this yr, then check him for a pulse. BEcause no way we can do anything but be waaaay better this yr.......UNLESSS....................HEALTH. That is all that stands between us and a rocket yr. And there...there i got no idea. Sure hope our new guys, hockey S and C types, are the answer.

Tip: here's an early read on S & C...guys with nicks and pulls...immediately out and not released to return. Which got me to thinking...is it at all possible that the guys kyle brot in for two yrs, plus the guys who had been here previously...is it possible their mistake was returning injured guys to the lineup before they were ready to go? These new guys err on the side of waiting longer. Could early retrurns to the lineup have been the problem all along? IDK...but it is worth thinking about. Sure would be nice if that is the answer for being #1 injured over last 5 yrs in NFL.(games lost to injury etc.)

So add my add ons to JTs...and there is a lot more there there than many people are willing to concede. I think we blow the doors off this yr....unless....HEALTH.

Of the teams that are good, the one who always goes to and wins the SB is the one who stayed healthiest. That is a cold , hard , and true fact.

As far as being overhyped? IDK and I don't care. Between FA, trade, draft, return of injured, new coaches...this is a vastly different team this yr.

Nice thread. How do Niners bomb out this year? Only if the injury bug bites again.I think Kyle is too determined and too intelligent to not get the wins rolling. Its why we hired him in the first place.

We could go 12-4 this year and they won't enjoy it until it's over or actually they'd be nitpicking and complaining the whole way. I honestly wonder how some people can even enjoy the game (or anything in life for that matter) when they're constantly negative

Hey everyone, let's make this thread about 91til. LOL.

Anyway, back to the topic.

Betting everything on a 28 year old QB with only 10 career starts, who completed only 59% of his passes last year, while going 1 and 2, and who is coming off a season ending knee injury may be a risky proposition. People who raise this aren't "haters." They are realists.

We're not even that hyped tho. Who's talking about us?

Shanahan has a lot of respect and so if we are good, nobody will be super surprised. They kinda expect us to be better but if you ask most people how many games they think we'll win the consensus would probably between 7 to 9 wins. I cant consider 8-8 "overhyped".

At best we're a "playoff sleeper", but you could say that about literally every other team in the NFL.

Plus 2 pass rushers who are known for their injuries and have lacked the ability to stay consistently healthy over time.
Are the 49ers overhyped? Always.
Hype or no hype it doesn't matter
Nfl.com says otherwise they said we in a good position to over achieve but theres no pressure to be more than 8-8.

He's right though. It's the same bunch of guys always with this kind of b******t.
Mmm... I don't think so. From what I gather, a lot of people see the 49ers as an up-and-coming team that may challenge for a playoff spot. So depending on how things go, they'd be a middle-of-the-pack team in between 6 to 9 wins. A lot of analysts really just wanna be the guy that says "See? I told you!"

Reasons to be optimistic are that we do have a top offensive mind with a potential franchise QB, a great rushing attack, upgraded receivers... On defense, we have an upgraded pass rush and a very talented defensive line. We've got a lot of great pieces. If all those things can come together and the team is consistent... yeah, challenging for a playoff spot is conceivable.

This year will be very telling for the Shanahan/Lynch regime.

The 49ers are the dark horse of the nfl. If Jimmy stays healthy they could win 14, Jimmy has never stayed healthy so they could win 3. End a story.

What does ANY of that have to do with this thread? LOL. It's just Homer's hating on pessimists. Big deal. Welcome to the balance of opinion.
