That's what they want it to do. It was really installed because the 49ers were winning so much and with Eddie D willing to spend they wanted a way to put a stop to the dynasty. It worked except with NE. They play in such a weak division that they have an easy path to the playoffs every year. Their formula has been good coach and good QB. After that they just fill in the blanks.

Aren't they looking a little far ahead? It won't be until 2021 until Buckner's contract is up and Nick Bosa hasn't even started his ROOKIE deal. But with that said, yes, the 49ers will have to be very prudent about the draft, think ahead, and work the board a little bit better to acquire more picks, or move up if appropriate. I'm hoping everyone looks great in OTAs, TC, and preseason so players that are likely cut can be moved for draft picks.

Man, you don't know how long cap hell can last. I'm certainly glad we have Praag now to help with that, so for the most part, we'll avoid the worst of it. But it's got to be faced sooner or later, as the team gets better. And it will, I have confidence in that. I mean as a rookie owner, Jed was able to get the team to a brief super bowl run and then made some newbie mistakes with his HC and GM.

I'm not the most positive about Jed, but he's done at least as much as some owners have in having a super bowl appearance. I think his hiring of Shanahan and Lynch was a good decision (maybe not made by him but by his mom, but that's another thread). I think this team with ShanaLynch has a bright future and a date with an imminent salary cap hell, and all I"m saying is look and see how the Pats dealt with it and lets replicate that.

Most of our cap hell during the '90s period you're stressing over was caused by dead money. We were light years ahead (behind?) every other team in the league with some ridiculous % of our cap going to players no longer on the team (or injured, but that was much smaller).

Unfortunately, I wouldn't have a clue where to look to back up my memory.

If we look to have a looming problem after a new CBA is in effect, and if we start getting stuck with large chunks of dead money, I'll join you in stressin'. Not before.
