Gore had longevity with us, but that was really it. Never brought us a title, never lead the league in rushing, was never clearly the best at his position. As far as longevity, I think someone like Bryant Young - who actually spent his whole career here, would be more deserving. P52, if he had played longer, would be a no-brainer for me. But he was a beast, and clearly one of the best linebackers of all time! I certainly wouldn't argue against it, I just think retiring early hurts him some.
Retire them all switch to letters.
Just let them wear whatever number they want. Who cares?

They gave that Mark Nzeocha guy the same number as Bowman. And even though hes not a HoF, it still doesn't mean anything or take away anything what Bowman did for this team
I would be fine if only 16+80+42+97 were retired. Maybe.....MAYBEEEE 8.

There has to be a combination of longevity, and greatness that dominated an era for me to think jersey retire....that means adding to the SB trophy room.

I am the sentimental type tho….so numbers like 33 and 44 in the same backfield catch my attention every time. Some people define a number and the number will never be the same after them, but it does not really mean you have to take it out of circulation.

interesting....

so no BY on your number list.

I look at BY like I look at Udonis Haslem, there is a point were the player becomes the persona of the team during darker times. There is too much loyalty there the guy gave the team his entire career.
For the old dudes that have theirs retired, we can give them a plaque in the stadium somewhere and un-retiree a few of those.

Brody's #12, Perry's #34, Krueger's #70, to start.
unretire #16...give it to a white WR: Kyle Shanahan
Doesn't seem to be a pressing need, but if for some reason they did un-retire numbers and just had the name up in a ring of honor, wouldn't bother me. But as long as they do have retired numbers, it's absurd that they never retired Cedrick Hardman's.

Why is this even a thing? What's the point in retiring a number of your short, ugly, dumbass dork nephew will just un-retire them anyways?
What's the point? A player that has his number retired by the team is off limits. People that want to unretire #'s most likely never saw that player play.

Totally forgot BY, I would retire 97 for sure, one of my favorite 49ers of all time.
Great franchises can't keep retiring numbers .

There are only so many .
unretire all numbers let players pick whatever number they like
Retiring numbers is a non sustainable practice. Eventually you run out. Why the heck shouldn't a modern 49er be able to wear the # of one of the greats? How awesome would it feel and the potential positive responsibility placed on those wearing those #'s to strive to represent that # rightly. I agree with the OP, unretire them all.
