You either unretire them all or none of them. I don't see any real justification in your post for the change, so I would leave it alone.

Love off-season threads.
Soon we will be debating the numbers new guys are wearing.

Ring of honor showcasing their numbers would be an ideal way.
If it were up to me the only numbers I'd keep retired/untouchable are 8, 16, 21, 42, 80, 87.
Eh, keep them retired.

A player could always ask permission of the "great" to use their number. This would both honor the great, while allowing the new guy a chance to shine in the number.

I'd have to agree - those numbers I think should stay retired.

It's a team number, not the player's personal number. Having said that, there are some numbers, as mentioned above that are recent enough to stay "retired" for a while longer, especially for hall of fame players. Reusing numbers at some point seems fine to me. I don't think that it takes anything away from the great players. Someone had the numbers before them anyway.
To use #21 as an example, Deion didn't make me forget about Eric Wright. Frank Gore didn't make me forget about Eric Wright or Deion.

I retire them all. You're gonna have to do it one day anyways. No one needs a reminder how great #80 was.

8, 16, 42, 80, 87, along with 21 and 52 should never be given out. 21 for Gore, not Deion, and 52 well duh WILLIS.

I'm with the unretire them all crowd. The man makes the numbers, not the other way around. But things like the ring of honor, statutes, etc.. should be used to honor our past legendary players. I'm hoping Bosa will have a Dwight Clark like memorial a couple of decades from now.

In Barcelona Messi wears 10, before him it was Ronadhinio, Maradona, Rivaldo. Also Xavi who is a legend played his entire career of 20 plus years wearing 6 retires, and next season someone else wears that number to honor his friend. In Real Madrid Ronaldo wears 7 and before him it was Figo. All those players are legends and I think if this was the nfl those numbers would be retired few times
I think maybe out of respect alll numbers should be retired for 10 years but in the end if I see another 21, I would think of Frank. If I never see someone wear his number I will simply not think back of the days and that would be forgotten.

The old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it applies here. Leave it alone...those whose numbers are retired should stay that way. They all earned them.
