Same for defense, we really don't know how all the defensive parts will fit together. But having said that, on paper, the offense and defense looks fast. It's my hope that by the 2nd half the offense goes to it's 4 minute offense to put the game away and the defense is in nickel 90% of the time. Keep in mind if the opposing offense is in 3rd and short on the opponents 20 yard line, you do need the horses to shut down the run in most cases.
I mean our defensive personnel is setup based on what the offense is showing (who we're playing against)

For sure. And we play two mobile QB's in our division - midgets Murray and Wilson, so I think Kocurek's wide 9 helps with that, but yeah - you try to win your division then the conference.
Rams and Cardinals are going to be passing a lot so I dont see a lot of base defense being played in those games. But again, 3rd and short, most teams play base defense - depending on the offensive personnel.

Right there's obviously scenarios where you need certain packages. 3 & 2 stuff like that.
I posted this earlier which shows the % of how teams lined up with 3 WRs, 1 RB 2 TE, 2 RB 2 TE etc when running the ball/passing the ball on offense. Kinda gives you and idea what defenses deal with and how they setup their personnel overall.

So, if(which isn't a big if) Jimmie Ward misses games, which he could be placed on PUP for 6 weeks, who takes his roster spot, the veteran Antone Exum Jr., or maybe another veteran? Please sign Tre Boston Lynch.
I think the biggest camp questions/battles are these.
QB2 Mullens vs Beathard
RB1 Jet vs Coleman vs Breida
WRs 5 and 6, Taylor vs James, Matthews vs Bourne
TEs 2 and/or 3, Celek vs Toilolo vs Smith vs Dwelley
Backup C Garland vs Magnuson
Swing T Coleman vs Skule
3rd OG Garnett vs Magnuson vs Beavers
8th DL Blair vs Taylor vs Day
SAM LB Smith vs Nzeocha
CB2 Verrett vs Moore vs Witherspoon
Slot CB Williams vs Reed
FS Ward(if healthy) vs Colbert vs Exum
PK Will Gould sign his tender
KR and PR, guys like Mostert, Pettis, Reed, James, Taylor, etc........

Great chart, if the info there is verifiably true. If true, I was playing with the adjustment knobs and dialed in 3rd and short, and it was amazing to see how many teams line up in 3 WR sets on third and short.
It really opened my eyes how base offense (2 RB's) is very seldom used even in short yardage situations.

Great post. I agree on your statement about Ward.

FS 45 Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles(2021) – Flannigan-Fowles is likely a longshot, but he did get $62,500 GTD, between a $12,500 signing bonus, and a $50K base GTD.
should probably keep an eye on him now. A spot is opening up on our roster.

Levine Toilolo got a 1yr deal with a $805k base salary and a $90k signing bonus, counts $735k against the cap due to minimum salary benefit deal.

Possible, but more likely Exum gets Ward's spot.

We will have to stop the run vs Seattle. The Cardinals and Rams both fell apart when their #1 rb got hurt. So stopping the pass is important but I am just as concerned with stopping the run in our division

I know some don't like our LBs, but I do, Warner and Kwon can play MIKE and WILL, Greenlaw looks like he can play SAM, MIKE and WILL, same for Smith, and Nzeocha. Lee MIKE and WILL, Mayo will be a key ST'er, kinda like Blake Costanzo days.

Yup...here is JD talking about the LB's in this new scheme.
The downside is that if you don't have LB's who can fill holes well and often, there's the potential for big runs given up. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. The shortest way to the goal line is to run the ball up the middle and that's what the wide 9 gives up. You gotta have space eaters and guys who can dominate inside and LB's who can fill to run this correctly. However, I think it gives us more flexibility to our LB's than previously. Now, your SAM doesn't have to be a different LB type altogether from your other LB's. Instead of keeping 2-3 SAMs, and 4-5 stack backers, you keep 5-6 LB's and have interchangeability with all of them.

I just dont think linebackers are important in a wide nine alignment. That formation is primarily a pass defense- not a run defense. So if I'm going to play wide 9, and I have guys like Ford and Bosa crashing down on the DE positions, all I need are fast linebackers that can tackle well in space.
I'd place my emphasis on coverage corners in this kind of defense. Guys that can play man coverage or jam the WR and then run with him.
I think we have the requisite personnel to play base defense, the only thing missing is that hybrid safety/linebacker that really can disguise coverages and give the opposing QB a wrong read on first down passes.

They're actually more important in this scheme because they need to take on G's more and fill holes incredibly quickly or bad things will happen. A SAM is now like the MIKE and WILL...not a Mark Nzeocha who plays 200 snaps a year in our base cover-3. If they all do their job well, Saleh may run less snickel and more nascar...we hope.
