Back in 1849, I had that gleam in my eyes like you newbies. After a century and a half of following this team, I'm the only one who can truly realize that we are not ready.

I agree preseason is pretty meaningless but I think the JG games last year have us a good idea of what this offense is capable of.

i agree with that! i do indeed you are correct and we will just pick up from where we left off!! i will be the first to eat crow!!

Lol
Dear OP:

Don't tell me what to do; you are not the boss of me.

Regards,

NFN
Has anybody actually said they expect Superbowl this year? We're a work in progress, the key word is "progress". If we progress as the season goes along, that's all we can ask, for now.

lol, this is not 81, this is not the repeat of the 81 secondary team and aa is no fred dean. i love dean but he was no cedrick hardman which is besides the point. telling people to tap the brakes on the high expectations leveled at this team from some of the media and some of our own fans is not crying. and if you indeed have been a fan for so long. you should also know, what happened last year now means nothing anymore and we can not live off of... well we should win 11 games cuz we won 6 in a row last year
OP is not asking us to tap the brakes. He wants us to get real. It is really good advice. The other option would be to get fake, and that's not really a viable route if we want to be real to ourselves. Real talk.

lol

Thl is killing
I think the OP should "Get Real." This is the age of offense. The NFL is highly skewed against the defense. As long as we have Jimmy and Kyle working together, I see no reason why we can't pick up where we left off.

My prediction: We are this year's Eagles.
Well if we're getting real, that '81 Niners team had no business being in the Super Bowl, let alone winning it.

And if I'm being really real, Led Zeppelin at the Oakland Coliseum in '77 absolutely sucked, despite what my 15 year old memories tell me.

Saw Lynyrd Skynrd and Santana there that year (cue Twilight Zone theme).

Didn't have a pass rush last year either and won our last 5 games

And were capable of winning at least 2-3 more if we had adequate QB play.
Not a good comparison because so much is different... but try this. GOAT BW's first yr , 2-14 . Kyle's was 1-10 Right until JG broke in and ran 5 straight, ending up 6-10. BW's second yr wth joe at helm full time was 6-10 and we knew we had our FR QB...finally. JimmyG's second yr is just around the corner and we know we have our FR QB.

BEst comparison i could make is BW.s 3rd yr and Kyle's 2nd yr. Both coming off of 6-10 seasons, both with FR QB, who had some time to learn the O. Can't recall the D that well but know we had ERic wright, Carlton Williamson, and our HOFer with only half his pinky(Ronnie Lott). We had the million $$ D Backfield ,probably our best ever, Now we have the deepest and one of best DLs we have had, but no ER, and a young guy in Saleh vs Geo Seifert, a GOAT in his own right as DC. Now, as then we have youth in DBs, but nothing like the DBs of the early 80s. Adrian C, Spoon, & Richard Sherman mixes youth and all pro (altho post Achilles repair). 80s were way better in DBackfield. We have several new DBs who show promise. LBs, Foster is a phenom, but staying healthy is a problem for him. WArner is bound to be an all pro someday soon. Dekoda Watson an up and comer, Smith , Coyle., very capable.

DL now is truly good, but hasn't gelled as of yet. With soon to be all pro Buckner, same for Solomon, Day, DJ, Mitch, all rate high and if AA can stay healthy, we have a great inside passrush, but no ER. We surely have depth. Scheme from Saleh will mean a lot here. He needs to be creative.
DL from the 80s...mmm, i draw blanks there.

OL...now...suddenly looks excellent after having no starting OGs just 3 weeks ago. Now we have 5 starting interior OLs, and a sixth ,either Person or Garnett sitting on the bench...but also a starter. Back then our OL went from so so to excellent by season's end. Probably even Steven in comparison.

RBs...Alfred Morris a late add but add in with Jet and Breida/Mostert...probably equates to RBs of early 80s.

WRs...now we have 4-5 excellent WRs, and then.... we had several good ones but i don't believe Jerry got going til a couple yrs later.

FB/OW. Au Jus had some solid competition back then...tie

STs...BW always seemed to have good STs, but now with Pettis, advantage to kyle's STs. FAST and lots of talent.

So put it all together, and we might have a team to rival BWs 3rd yr team that won it all . BW went 2-14, 6-10 and then SB. Cannot remember who the ER was BW's 3rd yr , or if he had one. We surely have none in kyle's 2nd yr. With a really good ER, i could see this be a SB yr. But without, then we probably need one more yr to get to and win the SB.

HC's/OC...both then and now, the best in the business. And that is what makes the comparison so interesting. Essentially, if we had an ER, I could see us being a threat to win it all this yr. But for a team that has been completely rebuilt in last 18 months...a staggering job...i think we just don't have quite enough D firepower.

Comparatively, however, i think these two teams look strikingly similar.
