Sherman just had another clean up surgery too.

Kind of an old post, but considering we need help in the secondary and it's draft time -- sounds about right for the topic to be resurrected. Looking at our crop of safeties, I feel like maybe we would most be inclined to draft a potential single-high safety type, rather than a box guy.

Personally, I think Marcell Harris should have a chance to start at SS and I liked what he flashed last year. We have plenty of box safeties. Tartt, Exum, Harris fit that mold. Colbert could play either spot honestly. Tartt and Exum can both play FS but neither is particularly strong in coverage. Ward and Colbert both made a lot of mental mistakes last year, and Reed shouldn't even be used at safety. Feel like half of these guys won't make the team, and wouldn't be surprised if someone got traded either.

The scary part is facing all the NFCW who just stacked up on WR's.
Butler, Metcalf, Isabella in the division. Good luck guys. I think we will be bad enough, that the FO finally understands to take the secondary more seriously next year. Hope Jimmie Ward at least makes it out of training camp healthy
Here's to hoping that Witherspoon rebounds, Moore and Harris turn into starter-quality players, Reed continues to grow, and Sherman, Tartt, and Ward star healthy

according to kyle. there was no one the niners could have drafted that could have come in here and taken their jobs. and the punter was the best guy the niners saw at that pick. if it was not so sad. it would be so funny

I think the philosophy from the beginning of the offseason was that Saleh's defense needed pass rush and the back end would benefit. Hurd was the interesting pick, I thought there were starter quality DBs still out there. Obviously they felt Hurd had more value in a multi-year approach.

I believe that is just a line. He said something similar about Marsh last year and where is he now? Hoping the young safeties can push Ward to the bench. If they can't, we are in trouble. We should be able to handle the bad/average teams, but good teams or teams with great QBs will take advantage.

Too bad those WRs won't have enough time to get open when their QBs are laying on their backs
They'll be good if Sherman switches to free safety he's already a leader on the team. Why not give him the reigns to our defense and let him be the general? He has the skill, experience, and iq he can create turnovers and get in opposing qb's heads. I trust Verrett, Witherspoon, and Moore to be competitive on the outside i really wish we got Greedy but we can still be a top 5 defense overall with who we got especially with that upgraded pass rush we have now. If Sherman still plays corner however we have to sign Eric Berry or Tre Boston. Ward and Colbert are decent back ups but neither has proved they can be consistent or create turnovers n neither is ready for primetime. Sad but true.

He doesn't have the speed or the hips to be a free safety in my opinion. Being able to use his hands and length is what makes him a good CB. And why would you move your best CB to another position? I have trust in Verrett if he's not injured. I have no trust in Witherspoon and Moore.

Very solid point in black!

Good post and I agree.

Right. I feel like we are stunting the development of guys like Reed and Moore by having them switch positions but that's just me. I know you wouldn't want to write off a player too soon, but it just seems to me that a guy like Witherspoon simply isn't a playmaker on defense. Dude gets run at in the run game and targeted in the passing game. Same thing with Injury Ward.

Honestly would love to see a pairing of Moore and Colbert at FS and SS respectively. That's tremendous back-line speed. Then trade off Tartt and keep a few backups, whether it's Ward, Marcell Harris, Exum, or UDFA newcomer Cameron Glenn.

Lol those are the wr's you are worried about this year? Don't know about the other guys but Metcalf isn't that hard to guard.

This. Sherman is not built for FS at all.
