Harbaugh's sideline tantrums left a lot to be desired. The trickle of leaks and rumors also was unprofessional. And the deliverate divorcing of the team from its history was unpleasant. So whilst it was nice to see the team challenging, the seeds of its downfall, with hindsight, were evident.

I agree with all that.

We were all delighted when Harbaugh was named to replace the incompetents that preceded him. That alone got him a lot of support. However, he came with some issues he never fixed. He was fortunate to have inherited a boatload of high picks that were ready to win...but not the big games. That was on him.

In hindsight, his image was enhanced not by what he actually accomplished but in comparison to those who came before. In truth, he is still over-rated by many.

He has never won a Championship at any level and that has continued at Michigan. His legacy at the moment is a nearly man; someone who can turn a team around but gets to the big games and chokes.

Exactly. Couple Lewis retirement and Flacco on fire along with their miracle win in Denver....mo was on their side.

At least the blackout worked in our favor...

Even with that we still should've won. We lost because of a lack of innovative play calling on the goal line.

Am I the only one who didn't think Alex Smith/Kaepernick made any difference? We were winning just as much with both QB's. Alex Smith played terribly in the 2011 NFC Championship.

Wut? I said with Boldin on the team too. I think Smith finds Boldin more often than Kaep. I love em both to death cause they both gave their heart to the game as 49ers.

Anyway, Smith had a better rating than Brady did two weeks later (97.6 to 91.1). That Giants Defense won them the SB, they pounded Brady inside all night long.

The sad thing was the Giants didn't do that to us. It was a physical, low-scoring game but we beat ourselves (Williams fumbling).

That saints game with the Brees sack fumble where the refs called roughing the passer and as a result seattle got home field adv instead of the Niners. That was the difference between a sb

Also the giants championship game was a joke. Bad calls mainly the Ahmad Bradshaw fumble by bowman no call. That was another appearance against New England. We schooled the pats in December at foxboro too.

Aside from Aldon smith and Justin smith injured in the playoffs, it was a perfect storm for our opponents.

This team was absolutely stacked everywhere except cb. We are headed back now with a much better qb and management so hopefully that will be enough to win 2 more sbs in the next 5-6 years!
No we have holes at ER but seem to have our secondary sorted.

It was a great ride, looking back if those teams had any luck they would've won 2 maybe even 3 SB's. In the SB loss to the Ravens, the Ravens had to be perfect to win, we needed one play that could've made the diff. In 2011 Ted Ginn going down the week before the NFC Championship cost us a shot at the SB. In 2013, again we couldn't find a way to close it. I always felt they were one wideout from the Championship.

While I kinda share your viewpoint, I also see things differently:

2011: Team was talented but wasn't ready to win "the big one." They were perennial losers until 2011. Sometimes, it takes a heart breaking loss in order for a team to tough it out the following year. Even if the 49ers beat the giants, they would have lost to the patriots.

2012: There was no excuse, LITERALLY NO EXCUSE for them to lose that game. They choked and that's a fact. They were the superior team but they didn't want it bad enough. that's on them and I share no empathy.

2013: Going back to my point I made about the 2011 49er team. The seahawks, in 2012, turned it around and were very talented but suffered a gut wrenching loss to the Falcons in the NFC divisional round. In 2013, they sacked up and clearly became the best team in the NFL. However, they almost choked that game as well. There was no way the 49ers should have made it that close. Carroll called some stupid plays and got careless at the end. But they pulled it off and they smashed the broncos in the super bowl.

How I see it, they should have won 2012, but 2011 and 2013, the right outcome happened. Now, from 2018-2020, they have the right HC and QB, but they need to build up that defense. They need A LOT of talent on that defense to overcome Saleh's ineptness.

I agree and disagree. The team may not have been ready to win the big game but they beat a Saints team, a week prior, that won the Super Bowl and Giants won in their first go round in 2007 with Eli and Coughlin. Also, the 81 Niners with Walsh and Montana had no experience and won it in their first playoff run. Who's to say we wouldn't have been able to beat the Patriots. 2012 no excuses can be made and 2013 the offensive play calling let us down more than what Seattle did.

I'm with you iowa, I was so upset that our perfect super bowl record was blemished. The fact is Harbaugh/Kaepernick aren't winners like Bill Walsh/ J. Montana/ and S. Young.

Would you rather be 5-0 or 5-1?

5-0.

I had to remind a Steeler fan recently that the 49ers were the first and only NFL team to start SBs 5-0. He totally forgot that the Steelers went 4-1 the year after the 49ers won their last SB.

Reminded me of my annoyance and how the 49er dynasty started out so strong and fast and then unfortunately faded a bit hard after the Eddie D BS. How the majority of NFL fans keep forgetting to include the 49ers on the list of proper dynasties.

Still had an opportunity to be the only team to start 6-0, but of course that wasn't meant to be.

That would have made the 49ers and Bulls the only 6-0 franchises. The 80's-90's Niners is still the best dynasty in NFL history.

Tom Brady....

Maybe not crushed, but definitely should have been able to do better than the Giants did. Maybe hold Patriots to 10-14 points??

It's crazy to think about, but Brian Baldinger a week or so after that NFCC (on his NFL Network program Playbook) said it was sad the 49ers lost that game because the felt the Patriots would have had a very hard time scoring on that defense.

The way he underscored the missed opportunity was something I nor many 49er fans could appreciate until much later.

The defense would've messed up Brady. The whole team was healthy and the spirit of 81 would've carried us to the trophy.

if eddie would have been in charge of the team. he would have demanded major changes be made after the super bowl loss in my opinion. i would have payed real money to see that clash of alpha male dogs in he and jh go at it. some fans here may have just been happy to be at the super bowl but eddie would have been. rightfully so. livid
2011-2013 was fool's gold. Harbs inherited a stacked roster and just bludgeoned opponents with brute force. In the end, that proved not to be sustainable with our veterans being beat up and ineffective in the post season.

The fact that we couldn't blow out a s**tty Ravens team scoring 34 points is a joke. We had Bow, Pat, Aldon and Cowboy on defense and couldn't do s**t because the D was beat up because Harbs/Fangio didn't believe in subbing out vets to keep them fresh.

The offense was gimmicky as hell and the front office was a mess bolted together by the fact that we were somehow winning. Like John Madden said, winning is the best deodorant for a funky locker room. Well our locker room and front office was a steaming pile of elephant s**t. Once the winning stopped, the smell was unbearable. The low point of the season was win we got blown out at home on Thanksgiving of 2014 with the opponents eating our turkey.

This Shanny-led team feels much more organic. Brick by brick was the correct mantra. This team would be built from the ground up in the image of its coach and GM. We have a QB and offense that can't be "figured out". Opposing defenses will have to "b*****dize their playbook" as one opposing coach said. This is how you build sustainable success. I was a bandwagoner during the Harbs days. I basically abandoned the team (and football in general) after 2000 and missed out on the decade of suck. But I think I pretty much earned back my fandom cheering for the Tomsula and Chip teams.

If Eddie D still owned the team they wouldn't have lost a Super Bowl. He built teams in way where they didn't always got to the big game but if they did they got the job done.

Time will tell if Shanahan will be the right guy for the job. He'll always have Super Bowl LI hanging over his head until he wins the big one. I agree with your points about 2011-13. Losing to the Ravens in the way we lost is on the coaches for not making adjustments and rotating personnel. Also, not having the team prepared for the game has to be looked at, as well.

you may be right. i was just bringing up something i think alot about. after the super bowl. this thread was filled with... you should just be happy to be there. my blood boiled and then i started to wonder. what would eddie think of that mindset and then what if he presided over a team that lost a super bowl. we know we demanded major changes after we lost the second nfc title game to dallas and that was just a championship game
