I would argue that Harbaugh perpetuated Smith's tendency to play conservatively by placing so much emphasis on the run game and trick formations and movement instead of trying to open up the passing game.

5 years prior to Harbaugh he had a career high 82 passer rating. First two years under Harbs he posts a 92 and a 104.

Rating was 90.7 not 92. 104 was in 9 starts.

Alex blossomed under Andy Reid.

I wasn't talking about the five years beginning with a level of talent that many called "expansion team grade," nor was I talking about the Jimmy Raye offense which was putrid. I was talking about how in the very first week that Mike Johnson replaced Raye, Smith began a run of 90+. Johnson did not make a magical overnight change in Smith. Smith was the same player he was in the previous weeks he had been under Raye. It was just that Johnson had a modern concept of what plays should be used. That continued under Harbaugh. It didn't begin under Harbaugh.

Stats without context are garbage. Alex was barley allowd to throw with Harbs. When he was, he had 1 read.

Harbs was way overrated. You can see that by his time at Michigan. 3rd best coach in big ten

Letting ginn go was stupid. He's still producing even today and our special teams haven't been the same since. He was the deep threat and should have even been used more.

He got doghoused because they'd throw those deep bombs like once every 2 games and hed drop them because he was so underutilized.

I didn't even realize he could catch until carolina just force fed him bombs all game. I just assumed he couldn't catch because he dropped so many for the 49ers.

Bull crap- Lucks father was former NFL QB- Oliver Luck, who had more to do with his development than JH-fact, but they are not the type gloat and make waves like a Levar Ball. All he had to do was surround him with a solid ground game, play his game and rely on Fangio to do his usual solid job as D Coordinator which was repeated in the NFL. Alex had a strong ground game, ST and D, All he had to do was not make big mistakes. JH did give him some confidence, after being shell shocked, Alex's current sucess situation was due to Andy Reid.

I just was giving thanks to those years, such good times. Playoff game against the Saints in 2011, beating the fudge packers two times in a row in the playoffs, the 2013 NFC Championship Game (the Super Bowl, that game was so intense). But I'm just as excited for these 49ers, times are good 49er fans, should be another hell of a ride.

Good observation. I admit I undervalued it, after becoming a 49ers fan in the early 80's and growing up with them through the 90's. Every week when the players did an interview at the end of that 49ers show with Wayne Walker they would say it doesn't matter if you can't win a SB. That's what I was taught. With that mentality it's hard to appreciate a season that doesn't end with a parade. Although 98-2010 really kind of sucked because we were never even that close. A couple of playoff appearances but that was meh.

they never knew how to use him,, kendall hunter was just a tragedy for him and our offense in my opinion. in my opinion. the most valuable niner on offense no one talked about

Good point about Oliver being his dad. I do remember Harbaugh saying in a coaching clinic, he didn't really care how (or what kind of style) a kid used to threw a ball. From his many interviews, he doesn't mention the QB position as much as he mentions more the RB position. I dunno. I think he's still a good coach, but he definitely needs to get a better QB at Michigan, if he's to beat the teams he's supposed to beat.
