who is going to be this year's Jeremy Kerley? it sure seems like there is going to be a lot of competition in the slot.

He's already pretty stout at 5'9" 210 lbs.

I don't know how well he fits in this scheme. It's a long shot to make the practice squad, let alone the 53.

Who was last years?

Sounds like a nice IR red shirt special already

Just curious, what would everyone say currently is the biggest need for this team? Edge rusher?

No question IMHO.

1. True LEO and ER SAM
2. OL questions

Every other position has legit young talent and now, depth.

The season will go as 1. and 2. go.

Certainly agree with this statement, as well as injuries (or lack thereof hopefully)... What I find really interesting about these two areas of the team is how the front office and scouting team responded to them. In regard to the pass rush, clearly, they are counting on development from the guys they have such as Pita, Eli Harold, Armstead, Buck, and Thomas (as well as guys like Marsh and Attaochu (bless you!)...and have confidence that a better covering secondary can improve the rush.

It appears that the strategy this off-season was to improve the pass rush through the improvement of the secondary (especially the depth) so that they get more "coverage sacks". They have stated as much several times, stating that the rushers this past year were "close" to a lot of sacks and that if the coverages could have held up just a bit longer, they would have had a lot more. I'm not sure it will be effective but I like the "out of the box" thinking...

As far as the O line is concerned,Shanahan has historically valued tackles and centers over guards and believes that if he can get just average play out of the OGs that the O line can be very effective. Again, is appears that the team is thinking outside the box in this area too. Now, it remains to be seen if Tomlinson and Cooper / Garnett / Person can give the team average to above average play but again, the front office and coaching staff seems to think so and thus far, they have a pretty good track record.

In summation, what I like about the off-season approach is the outside the box thinking, the confidence in what they have, the attempts to fit players and scheme, and the focus on finding versatile players that can play multiple positions (ala New England) so that when injuries occur, they have guys they can plug in. From a fan's perspective, it seems to be about trusting the process...hard to do sometimes, yes?

Cheers!

Really nice post.

Yeah, it shows their ability to recognize how injuries killed them last year and therefore focused heavily on depth at all the positions we were snake bitten on last year.

Lynch recognized the need to employ more ER and get more production from the edges but if they didn't feel there were any worthy (I disagreed slightly), then focus more on shoring up the secondary and bring in Kiffen and see if you can convert more pressures into coverage sacks and see if you can develop more. We'll see if that approach works.

Yeah, it sure seems like Kyle is willing to sacrifice premier G play for average. That's a sound approach if you've got two high priced and premier T's and C. Not every position needs to be all pro worthy. I'd rather sacrifice elsewhere when you finally have your FQB but G play can be somewhat hidden with premier T and C play so I get that approach. I really hope it pans out and Tomlinson and Cooper/Person/Garnett reach their full potential and give us above average play.

Also, you can only build so much so quickly and the players have to be available to you. If they didn't feel there was a top draft or FA for ER or G, then you make due with it and push it to next year.
Haven't sounded off on Foster's 2GM suspension, and I'm happy it was only 2 GMs, glad Goodell didn't go psycho, but kinda messed up he gets 2 GMs for weapons, while Jameis gets 3 for sexual assault on a Uber driver, just messed up how the NFL's policies are.

Good stuff guys. Sounds like Davis should get a look at FS if he's fast enough?

At FS? Not the slot CB spot?

Devron is perfect for the Slot CB, but I can see them trying him out at FS for more versatility, but he's a PS guy IMO.

Agreed with Foster. Hope this is the turning point. Yeah, I think we were looking at Moseley & Reed the same way...toggle between SCB and FS.

Do you have any information on the Supplemental Draft? Sam Beal is a 6'0 7/8" 178 4.47 CB drawing interest. Others we may be interested in?

Any chance we go for any of these guys? Discuss.

This year, five players have been declared eligible; take a look:

Adonis Alexander, DB – Virginia Tech

Sam Beal, DB – Western Michigan

Brandon Bryant, DB – Mississippi State

Martayveus Carter, RB – Grand Valley State

Bright Ugwoegbu, LB – Oregon State

The 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft will take place July 11 at 10:00 a.m. PT.

Thanks a lot NC... You know I respect your opinion as much or more than anyone else's in the Zone so the kind words are much appreciated...

Cheers!

Just FYI..... I used to be known as NW9erfan but that changed when I moved back to the Bay Area... Just wanted you to know that I've posted a lot more times than 151.

That's right...totally remember having conversations with you back then too. Keep up the great posts.

Agreed. Very happy Foster only got 2 games also. Don't get the NFL & there policies & how they are enforced
Supplemental Draft coming up in 25 minutes.

Brandon Bryant, DB – Mississippi State
Martayveus Carter, RB – Grand Valley State

Bryant might be great depth at FS behind Colbert given his blazing speed for his size.
