Needs Summer of 2017--and where it stands now...
FQB: A+ JG is the answer.
OG: D- Lost Fusco, added Cooper...Garnett? Tomlinson? Hmm...too many ifs.
WR: B Garcon, Goodwin, and...OK, maybe some of these young guys rise to the occasion. Still a "B" Need!
TE: B- Some nice potential in Kitle, Hikutini and Celek. Only a need if they can find a really good TE to upgrade. "C" Need.
RB: B- I like the shift from Hyde to the younger guys but...anyone stand out? Just OK. Can they draft a threat? Hope so.
FB: A+ They picked up the best in the NFL...Juszczyk
C: A Major upgrade with Richburg
OT: Same but perhaps backups improved?
DL: B+ Added Mitchell and a couple of backups who may help--Day and Marsh. Would be an A+ if they had a sure pass rush specialist.
LB: B Added Foster, dynamic if he doesn't Aldon-out, Lee, Coyle? Still a major need. No dynamic pass rusher.
S: I'm so confused about what they want! I pass on the safeties. I like their talent but just where will they play...and who. Ward at CB/FS/?, Tartt as ILB?
CB: B or D Sherman and Witherspoon will be pretty decent starters if healthy. A big if.
K/P: B+ Pretty good at both spots. I'm definitely OK with them standing pat.
Offensive strengths--seems to be OT, C, FB and FQB on offense. Not bad but they had better add some legitimate threats at the skill positions. And OGs? Unless Richburg makes these OGs lives easier...might still be a long year. Rookie OGs are scary as well. Coaching! Shanahan does make a difference!
Defensive Strengths--hmm...Foster? DL if they find a pass rush? DBs if Sherman can infuse some wisdom? Yikes...just up in the air with so many guys trying to make good. Punt! No idea how they will play this year but they desperately need a couple guys who can make a difference--kind of like Cowboy and Willis did.

Smart. I love it...taking our massive team needs from 2017 and seeing where we're at today. Man, we've come a long ways but this is an exercise in understanding how long it truly takes to build a powerhouse. Even with a FQB and two full off seasons, we'll still have holes to fill and positions that clearly need more talent. Thanks for doing this!

Thanks! Remember when they drafted Willis and we wondered if he would really make a difference? Or when they signed Justin and people said he was a bad fit in the scheme? We desperately need elite playmakers but will have no idea who they are until they prove themselves. Could one of our safeties become dominant? Or is the scheme going to relegate them to position-centric pawns...interchangeable depending on situation? Not sure whether they are trying to find fits for guys drafted for a different scheme? Anyway, it looks like our defense is going to be less dependent on star players and more even in talent... ...
Edit: LOL...I understand what Shanahan is doing so much more than what Saleh is doing. But as I asked above, is that because we have so many bad fits?

Mmmm.... Lots to mull over here.
As much as I appreciate this and agree on many of your positions, I have to respectfully disagree with you (slightly) in some areas.
On offense, I'd give the current OG crop a C- (as opposed to D-) because Cooper played well in a similar scheme last year in Dallas and Tomlinson showed improvement (like much of the team did) after Jimmy came on the scene. I agree with you that Richburg makes both OGs slightly better too. He is really good. Given how well the WRs played post Jimmy, I'd give that group a B+ (Goodwin was an absolute stud down the stretch and Garcon, their best wide-out didn't even play then). With the "Jet" added to the mix (with his very good pass protection skills), I'd give that group a solid B, with a bruising short yardage guy the only thing missing there. I'd also give the TE group a B as well, since the improvement after Jimmy arrived was dramatic (It's Celek time!").
On defense, I actually think you are being too generous with the LB crew. I'd give that group a C+ (and that grade would drop even more if Foster is suspended or is cut). I'd also give the CBs a B- at the moment, since even with Jimmie Ward moving back to corner, there is not nearly enough good depth. I love Tartt and Colbert as the safety pair but again, the depth is sorely lacking, especially if Reid leaves (and that appears likely)... I do like Chanceller James though so overall, I'd give that position a B- as well. Clearly, as you stated, another pass rusher or even 2 is needed to really make this defense solid and more depth is needed everywhere except for the DL, which looks to be in great shape moving forward, a nice mixture of youth and experience.
Great thread....let's keep it going. Other zoners, your thoughts?
Cheers!

Offensively it's guard for obvious reasons.
Defensively it's linebacker. I don't want to see Harold and Coyle out there. The team is a different defense with foster out there and since he's unreliable that makes linebacker the biggest need on defense.
People tend to get enamored with pass rush and edge and think it's our biggest weakness but the truth is if Thomas and Buckner only have a slight improvement we will be in the better half of the league on pressures and if they don't we will still be top 20.
If we can't stop the run and cover the short pass in the middle because our lbs suck then it really won't matter how good the pass rush is.

ODDS:
Ok we need CB, 2 LBs, 2 OGs, and an EDGE to be whole. 6 slots, 4 diifferent positions. Odds are we fix at least 3...but wait, we have an extra 3rd...ok, we fix 4 slots. Which would they be, with top flite quality, and considering there are lots of really fine OGs, CBs, DLs in draft. Not many EDGES...well one, but he's gone early. Then the 2nd tier...but how good are they? I think we get a CB, at least one OG, but probably 2, and a starter LB. Also we take an EDGE unless he is not a starter. I bet we end up shy 2 starters...EDGE and maybe one OG. I think we fill the remainder. We will get the other two but they may not be first yr starters. So if we pull that off, filling 4 of our 6 missing pieces, that would be a great draft. That would leave 2 for next yr.
If Kyle is really serious about protecting JG, then we fill both OGs, and fill one less LB....starters , now, not just fodder.
We will pick up another WR, another RB, but those aren't starters.

OK fellas...Hero has been putting together a great list of confirmed visits with draftees. The pool is getting large but here is what I'm surmising from it.
1. It's safe to say we're targeting ER for the first pick; second pick at the latest.
2. Same concept with OL. It looks like a really tall but lean T or C/G for that second pick. Cross-trained.
3. CB is going to be the next pick most likely like Ahkello Witherspoon last year (pick 3-4).
4. LB seems to be the next target, rounds 4-7. But depth only which may be insight into how the Foster situation is viewed and how they feel about Brock Coyle and Elijah Lee and with Malcolm Smith coming back.
5. WR or TE seems next. Kyle is looking at 5 day three WR/TE's 6'3"-6'5" (RZ threat).
6. S is evenly spread out so probably just looking for depth here on a H/W/S guy late like Adrian Colbert last year.
7. I'm surprised we're looking at so many DT/DE's, rounds 1-4. To replace Tank? I'm not sure what to make of that.
8. Might look at a QB on Day 3 to replace Mullens.
9. It seems like we're looking at a lot of players in the mid to back-end of the first round. This might be an indication of prep for a trade-back or up scenario.
