The San Francisco 49ers recorded an NFL-low 20 sacks in 2025, six fewer than the next-lowest total, posted by the New York Jets.
Defensive end Nick Bosa has not played since Week 2 this season, raising concerns that his absence could similarly affect the 49ers' pass rush. Bosa played just three games last season before suffering a season-ending ACL injury.
However, through six games in 2026, San Francisco's defense has recorded 15 sacks, already approaching its entire total from last season. That production ties the 49ers for 12th in the NFL.
The pass rush could get another boost when Bosa returns from his calf injury, potentially as soon as Sunday's matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
General manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR Thursday morning. He was asked to explain the improvement in the 49ers' pass rush.
"Well, I think it's a combination of a lot of things," Lynch said. "One thing I do notice, I think we're playing a little more aggressive coverage, and when you can get them to hold on, maybe pat the ball one more time, can those guys finish at the quarterback?
"And then, I think, you go get a guy like [DT] Osa [Odighizuwa] in the interior, the way he's rushing. [DE] Keion White is playing big-time football. He's so versatile. He can play across the line. You mix in those young guys—we've got a lot of different options."
The coaching staff has also played a role in the improvement. Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris leads the unit, while defensive line coach Kris Kocurek oversees development in the trenches.
"Kris Kocurek, I think, is the best D-line coach in football," Lynch said. "He continues to develop those guys. He's relentless in pushing them every day, and never lacks any enthusiasm. But they love playing for him. Raheem's done a fantastic job. Our defense is really tied together right now.
"I think everybody is aware we have a really big challenge with the Falcons' explosive young group. And we've got a big challenge coming this Sunday."
