Was just going to post this. Reid's concussions seem a little exaggerated. He got rocked a few times his rookie season, I remember one in 2014 (vs SD) when he went head on with a RB, and has been concussion free since, if I remember right. 2016 was IR'ed with a torn bicep. 2017 missed time with a busted knee.

While re-signing Reid may not be a popular option, Saleh has shown that he will deploy three safety looks versus 3 WR sets (Coyle out, Leon Hall in; Foster was the only LB on the field). I noticed this often later in the season when Jimmy G was on board. Whether that warrants giving Reid a multi-year deal is debatable since the third safety will get limited snaps. With Jimmy G, we might be able to assume that the 49ers will be in a position of having the lead more often than trailing on the scoreboard (fingers crossed). If the 49er defense is going to face more pass attempts as opposing teams play catch up, then it gives some value to the third safety.

I liked what I saw out of Tartt this season but it was a very limited sample. Wish he was able to put more on film so we know for sure if he is clearly the better option than Reid. At this point, I'm not sure who is the better SS and will spend some time spotlighting Tartt on film this offseason.

Ward can stay or go, it doesn't matter imo. He has a useful skillset, but has earned his reputation as an injury prone player.

edit: if the 49ers draft a safety on Day 1 (DJames) I'll be very upset and will fly a banner over Levi's

Only way I would keep Ward is if he signed a purely incentive based contract. He's good for 8 games a season....
ditch reid and keep everyone else. Draft a rookie in the 6th round.
I'm just amazed that he said James was a combination of Ed Reed and Sean Taylor, two of the best safeties ever. If that WAS true, I would give up 2-3 picks just to guarantee his draft selection. What a ridiculous comparison
Let Reid walk and go after Lamarcus Joyner from LA Rams. Upgrade at Safety and hurt a division rival at the same time.

Joyner can't play SS (box safety) can he? At 5'9? He isn't unseating Colbert at FS. Pass on Joyner.
Would like to keep Reid in a backup SS / LB, he brings good leadership and is versatile. But I doubt he stays, he probably still wants to start, and I don't think he'll start over Tartt.

Ward needs to be cut

Have you seen him play? Offenses game plan around him. A safety. That never happens. Add to the fact that he is a sophomore and a Reed/Taylor comp. Isn't that hard to understand. The sky is the limit for this kid.

It won't matter though. He will be gone when we pick at 9/10

Whether we keep Ward or not, it isn't going to matter... he will be sidelined with another injury so next man up (draft / free agency) will step up. FO takes a hit financially if they re-sign him since he's just going to get hurt again

if we have to chose between Ward and Reid I'm going Reid all day....this system is taylor made for him.

IF we keep both that's fine, I sure as hell am NOT gonna give Ward anything though. Colbert looks like a fine fit at FS as well.

We aren't facing a cap problem, however, when I look at what Ward has actually done and his $8.4M cap number I . That is Pro Bowl money and he hasn't come close to showing that yet. Still, he does have some versatility so keeping him around to see how the completion plays out may be the move.

I definitely want to keep Reid. He is very well-respected by his teammates and that means a lot with so many young players on the team. Just this week someone posted a vid of him pushing Colbert away from a taunting foul. Stuff like that is worth money. Also, he has the versatility to play down close to the line as well as deeper in the secondary.

We need to see if Tartt can become the player he has flashed at times. Last we saw him play, he was still prone to taking bad angles and making some bone head moves. Competition.
Cut ward, dont resign Reid.

Draft Derwin Jones.

Jones/Colbert would be the future.

I am fine bringing both Reid and Ward back, if the deals are fair. If Reid would sign a 3 year 12 million total deal, and Ward would sign a 3 year 15 million total deal, then I would be game. Sure we have Colbert and Tartt, but keeping Reid+Ward gives us extreme flexibility. Ward could go back to an outside CB with Witherspoon on the other side. Reid could start at SS and Colbert at FS, with Tartt backing both of them up, and also coming in at the WILL spot on passing downs. EIther way everyone gets playing time, and if there is an injury, we're covered in all areas referring to the safety spots. Versatility is key.

If they won't come back on some what team friendly deals, then I am fine with both leaving, and letting Lynch look at FA or mid to late rounds of the draft to get depth/ potential starter types.

Can we try spending our 1st round pick on someone that doesn't play DT or Safety?
