Harbs has been a winner everywhere he goes. He is known to turn programs around.

I will give you that his one issue was that he was loyal to a fault. If he would of ditched Roman sooner than later, we probably win a Super Bowl. However, some of the issue had to do with how we were built. When Roman tried to open up the offense with more pass plays, Kap could execute. KS had the same problem with House and Beathard. Sometimes you have to make do. We had Gore and a road grinding online.

We will never know due to harbaughs stubbornness

One thing for sure is that people are starting to see that he can't beat teams with talent or good coaching at Michigan

I'm not a college football guy. I wish I was. I have seen this debated though and it sounds like Harbs at least made Michigan a contender. I do think college is a little bit of a different animal though, mainly because there are huge inequities in talent.

Harbaugh has not had Michigan contending for anything. His first 2 years were decent, but this year they were unranked and lost to an unranked team in a bullish!t bowl game. And he can't beat any of their rivals.

Harbaugh is massively overrated by some posters here.

Mariucci could have won a couple of superbowls with the roster Harbaugh had.

Kyle, not close. Jim can win with talent, but his routine gets old. Kyle doesn't demand player's respect, he earns it.

In all fairness if Harbaugh was a mature adult he would be a much better coach. A team emulates their coach and when your head coach cant maintain his composure Im not sure how the team is supposed to. Its happened time and time again including the SB and last year when Michigan had OSU on the ropes and Harbaughs 15 yards unsportsmanlike penalty gave OSU the ball in the rz.

Also if the dude throws tantrums at refs, imagine his tantrums behind closed doors.

Til this day no other coach has a better record than Harbaugh and he had to deal with jed and baalke in his first 3 years. Not even bill's record is better than Harbaugh in his first three years.. Just facts of life we all must accept..

He turned 49ers around 44-19-1 recordwith an Nfc banner.

He turned Michigan around 3 years 29-13 Michigan.

He turned Stanford around.

He turned University San Diego.

Keep it up and will go into the Qb's he has helped along the way including turning around Alex Smith career..

I went with Shanny due to all the baggage that always seems to come with Harbaugh but this is really close. Kyle has never won as a HC. We're going off a *promising* 6-10 season. Harbaugh went 13-3 year 1 with a mentally broken Alex Smith entering that season. He also went toe to toe with stacked Seahawks teams for years. Harbaugh is an incredible football coach and I don't think he's getting enough credit in this thread.

Pundits rushed to their keyboards to announce his ignorance and foolishness. Fans went into apoplectic snits. People excoriated both Harbaugh and Balke for such a poor decision. Everyone, yours truly included, hopefully predicted another losing but building season."

And yet, six games and a third of the way through the 2011 season, the 49ers have an astounding 5-1 record. As they go into their seventh week bye they are rated by various pundits as the fourth, fifth or sixth rated team of the 32 teams in the NFL.


How in heck did this happen?

Coach Harbaugh is sly and smarter than fans and pundits gave him credit for being.

He was experienced with two major areas of NFL coaching: He'd been a quarterback himself and knew the position from behind the eyes of the guy under the NFL's highest pressure. And he'd coached college quarterbacks who also were initially under-rated into bowl-winning quarterbacks of dominating teams.

He instinctively felt he had the key to coaching Alex Smith: Compliments along with competent and constant teaching, a mentoring if you will, would bring out the best Alex had to offer.

This method of handling a heretofore jittery and mistake-prone quarterback has worked to produce a very good manager of the offense. That left the defense to limit opposing teams to scanty scores.

All Smith needed to get his career back on track was some positive reinforcement. The horse-whisperer method is very persuasive.

And the 49ers have a season record of five wins and one very close loss.

I would be very surprised if Alex Smith progressed to top the quarterbacks in all of the statistical and thrilling heights of Brady, Brees and Rodgers. But he works well for a team coming out of the doldrums and into the national spotlight.


And I and the other pundits and many fans have been wrong before.

He has earned a good contract with any NFL team when he becomes a free agent at the end of this season and many teams would be happy to have him. I wonder if he'll accept a contract elsewhere or whether he will be content to stay in San Francisco as the backup to the emerging Kaepernick?

Harbaugh is a good coach and I greatly appreciate everything he did. With that said, the consistency the guy seems to have in blowing big games is a concern. He's 2-3 in Bowl games. Both this season and last season, his team looked ready for a playoff run and then collapsed at the end of the season. He still has not beaten Ohio State and has only beaten Michigan State once. With the 49ers, he went to three straight NFC Championships but got no rings out of it.

Again, he's a good coach and I'm still pissed Jed "mutually parted ways" with him. But the guy is definitely missing something when it comes to getting over that last hump.

Granted, we've never even seen Shanahan coach a playoff game and the most playoff experience Jimmy G has is sitting next to Tom Brady on the sideline, so we don't know how they'll be in big games (personally if we're a wild card team next year I don't expect them to get past the first round just because it's difficult to win as a first-time wild card).

Harbaugh has an amazing ability to go to any program and Make it an instant contender. But I get the feeling he will never win you the big one. I want to believe that Shanahan will.

Smith hasn't said it yet, so I'll say it for him: "Look at me now."

There were serious rumors that Smith would be let go or traded at the end of the 2010 season. Maybe a fresh start was all he needed. However, he never lost faith in his organization or himself—even when everyone else had. When the NFL was still picking up the pieces of its preseason lockout threat, Smith called his team together and began coordinating workouts.


He didn't even have a contract.

Harbaugh recognized Smith's work ethic and his underlying talent and kept him around, which turned out to be the most underrated decision of the preseason. Smith boasts a 93.9 quarterback rating and only four interceptions to go along with his 13 touchdowns.

These definitely aren't Tom Brady-caliber numbers, but he has been able to make the right completions at the right times. A prime example of this was during Week 6 when the Niners were on the road in Detroit facing the previously undefeated Lions.

Fourth quarter, 4th-and-goal. Game on the line, ball in Smith's hands, and what does he do? Throws a bullet to tight end Delanie Walker who barely keeps his knee off the ground before the ball crosses the goal line. 49ers win and improve their record to what was 5-1 at the time.

The old Alex Smith would have found a way to lose a game like that. But this is the new Alex Smith. The Harbaugh version. The winning version.

Smith plays in an offense led by relentless running back Frank Gore. This has opened up the Niners playbook and allowed Smith to play within himself. Smith has matured into the quarterback he is now because of the support of his teammates. He no longer tries to single-handedly win games. Instead he single-handedly tries to let his teammates win games.


Smith has not gained the national recognition he deserves because of his infamous past. These days success is measured by a quarterback's passer rating, when it should be assessed through wins and leadership. This season Smith has brought both aspects to San Francisco.

I hate it, if the impression I'm giving off is that I don't think Harbaugh is a good to great coach because I do. I just dont think he's on Kyle's level offensively and personally I put a great deal of importance in that. Harbaugh just wasn't the offensive guy I thought he was coming from Stanford.

Now he's a fantastic leader of a team although I do question how his demeanor wears on a pro team.

I dont know about other fans, but i dont celebrate NFC banners....

0-1 is all i care about Harbaugh, and all i remember to care. If he checks his ego and hands the ball to Frank Gore we win.
