They said Shanahan planned on simplifying the offense today. I think he planned on starting Beathard if Hoyer struggled.
At this point developing Beathard has to happen before we go into the draft. It will in fact slow the growth of the overall offense if Beathard can't utilize most of the playbook after a couple few weeks but we needed a QB change and need to see what we have in Beathard.

This, that and all of the above.
Beathard needs time to develop in the new offense. Playing him now gives us an opportunity to REALLY evaluate his play/growth in the offense.
Hopefully he'll play well and we'll also be able to use the whole playbook by week 9 or 10.
