One of the reasons #96 is back on the streets.

Thanks, jd for the clarification. On this trap play I labeled Reid as RayRay, it should be Reid.

The LBs were very hesitant in stepping up to fill in this game. Foster was adjusting to his first game back while both he and Reid were learning a new position. There were many plays where they could have done a better job stepping up, literally not figuratively, to fill at the point of attack. It's hard to tell from the end zone view, but on this TD run, Foster did not step forward and allowed the RT to get far into the second level. Also, #96 did a poor job closing down on the edge. He was unblocked and could have just attacked the handoff.

DLinemen that are being trap blocked and falling on their face isn't that uncommon. Here's Gerald McCoy (3t) looking like Tony McDaniels. They expect to hit someone when firing out, then when the OL move out of the way, they fall over.

JD and TH..do you guys see Reid getting better at LB with more reps? Do you think he could flourish at that position?

Gotta think he won't be able to show a whole lot of improvement this season. Between being undersized and learning a new position in the middle of a season, the odds are stacked against him.

Probably. Would just be nice if he could somehow fill that hole so they don't have to address it in FA/draft

Yeah, the D-lineman falling down doesn't help, though that's why you run trap plays, to give your lineman better angles of attack and to keep the D-lineman off guard. Reid should've filled the hole by attacking the outside of the hold with his inside shoulder. If you have a down block coming, as a LB, you attack that block with your inside shoulder to keep your outside shoulder free for the ball carrier. Bowman and Willis were masters of this.

Well because we haven't seen him in that role before it's hard to say. It'll be something to watch as the season goes along if he improves or if he plays like he did last game.

The first one (1:44 remaining, 1st qtr), Kilgore was too slow to get out and make his block on Lee, who dropped Hyde for a 2 yd loss.

Another outside run by Breida (9:43 remaining, 2nd qtr), Staley and Kilgore both fail on their blocks on the safety and MLB. 3 yd loss

Hyde to the right side (7:58 remaining, 2nd qtr), Kilgore fails again and lets the LB push him back into Hyde. 2 yd loss

Hyde to the right side (9:33 remaining, 3rd qtr), Tomlinson gets manhandled by his assignment. 4 yd loss

So in other words, the oline can't do them.

Thanks!

That's been the biggest problem. I understand why Kyle still tries them, you have to remain unpredictable and you'd hope to at least get 1 or 2 positive yards on those plays, not negative plays.

The sad thing is we can't run to either side so it's not even a Brown/Staley thing.

In fairness, I only looked at the plays that resulted in losses. I didn't check to see if there were any positive gains on outside runs.
