McVay was the TEs coach, Shanny was the OC. Generally assistant coaches on the offensive side of the ball work under the OC.

So McVay was under Kyle in Washington.

The whole "he didn't win a SB" thing doesn't fly so well when the replacements people have in mind also haven't won a SB…

Unless the replacements are guys like Mike McCarthy or Doug Pederson or Bill Belichick…

The best HC in the NFL right now is the same guy Eagles fans wanted to push out the door. Sure they won 2 SBs after he left but in no way shape or form is Pederson or Sirianni better coaches than Reid. Took them having a loaded roster top to bottom to get it done and terrific coordinators on top of it.

How do you feel about Mike Tomlin? I have Steeler fan friends that want him replaced and he's won a SB, created a solid winning culture and has a great coaching record, but his team hasn't had playoff success in forever. Why do they play these games if winning SBs doesn't matter?
Kyle just needs to win a championship or two and take his place in history. He needs to get over that hump and silence the critics, hopefully that's soon.

I'm a big Tomlin fan in general but I also don't see a guy who is getting you over the hump. 49ers gave good team culture. That's not their issue.

Tomlin hasn't won a playoff game in a long time. In fact he and Kyle have won the same amount of playoff games in their HC careers. Yes Tomlin has a SB win under his belt…but he's also been coaching 10 years longer than Kyle. Not a great trend. I think it's more likely that Kyle would find a way for us to break through than for Tomlin to come in and do the same here.

As he should. Every year he puts our team in a position to succeed.

There are very few coaches in the league where if they got fired tomorrow, you'd have half the league go after him. Shanny is one of those coaches

I didn't mean go after Tomlin. I just mean in comparison to Kyle. I think Kyle is a much better coach than Tomlin. I'm just saying, on paper Tomlin looks great, but when you talk about playoffs and winning SBs, not so much. Some people think he won that SB with Cowhers team, which might be true but he still got the job done.

It's a valid discussion though isn't it? That's why I find the idea Head Coach X won a SB and Head Coach Y didn't to be pretty limited when you dig into it.

Mike Tomlin has won a SB.
Mike McCarthy has won a SB.
Doug Pederson has won a SB.

Kyle Shanahan has not. Are those guys better than Kyle simply because they won a SB? I'd say out of those 3 Pederson did the more impressive job given he lost his starting QB and managed to win vs Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. But would he have won it if Belichick didn't make the crazy decision to sit their best DB on a defense that was already suspect? What has Doug accomplished since or really outside of that?

Tomlin and McCarthy won with HOF QBs and haven't done anything like it since. McCarthy especially has coached a number of disasters while still having prime Aaron Rodgers.

We know what the ultimate prize in this sport is and we all want that from the 49ers but so much goes into winning that game that it isn't as simple as HC X is better just cuz he won it and HC Y didn't.

Doug Pederson isn't a better HC than Bill Belichick cuz he beat him that SB. Sirianni isn't a better HC than Reid cuz he beat him that year.

Well s**t……when you put it that way😎

We all just need Kyle to get it done, he's had the opportunities, hopefully there's still more that come down the road.
Kyle is for me, the most consistent, best HC we could have to run the team. Perfect? Nope, no one is and he has made and will make mistakes because he's human but he keeps us in contention year in and year out, getting the most out of his team. Super Bowl? I think eventually he wil win one, maybe two if everything can come together. I think in the future people will relish the Shanahan era as much as the Walsh era for those of us who still remember that era and lived through it . . . that was the best of times . . . Shanahan like Walsh, keeps this team in contention year in and year out.

If anything this game vs Atlanta should give people a lot of hope for Kyle being able to adapt and move away from his comfort zone. Yes obviously this was a game plan situation but if Kyle was able to change things up and go more to gap run game vs zone it means in kill the clock situation we can now be flexible and move to the clock killing type of play. Granted we still have OL build more for zone and don't have the road graders more suited for power run but the fact that we're still able to execute it means we can get it done.

Obviously not every opponent may be as small on the line as Atlanta was so maybe the success won't be to the level we saw on Sunday but it's still encouraging to me.

This.

There are so many factors that go into winning a Super Bowl. The best team doesn't always win the Super Bowl. All you can really ask for is a coach to get you to the playoffs and if you get to the Super Bowl to put you in position to win. If your field goal kicker misses the game winning field goal is it really the head coaches fault? If John Taylor drops the last minute TD pass from Joe Montana and we lose SB XXIII is it Bill Walsh's fault?

I think these things are related. I really like the Steelers model, they are tied for most super bowl championships in NFL history. When you hire a coach it should be looked at as a lifetime deal, none of the top SB winning teams have a revolving door at the HC position like the none winning SB teams that have yet to win the big one.

KS should be here for decades at his age, sooner or later things will happen for us. remember how many OC's Alex Smith had with us? KS is the offense so all we've had to worry about is stability on the defense and ST sides. This model has to work at some point.
I have my concerns when it comes to the SB losses. But this year has made me realize just how good he is. 5-2 with an injured roster and no starting QB.

As much as the Walsh era? No way let's stop here. We can praise Shanahan for all the big wins and getting this team close to the finish line. But at the end of his tenure here if there's still no rings then no we shouldn't relish this era as much as Walsh or even the Seifert era. Those coaches got it done when they were in it. Hoisting the Lombardi is the ultimate accomplishment not getting close over and over again.
