Have to admit, the last few weeks have been downright depressing, finding out the OGs and Centers available in FA are not much of a step up from our current C, Kilgore. And of course, both OGs are unsettled, and questions are out there, will Laken even make the team? And Fsco is not a starter we want , well, starting. Then came ABs excellent breakdown of our compromised positions, and the potential players we could take in FA and draft to fill our big holes. After reading AB's well thot out post, i feel way better about the OGs and C than I did before. Maybe the FA OGs and Centers aren't as bad as they have been made out to be. Not saying they are Norwell or Nelson caliber but maybe they will suffice. That is a darn site Better than having to get all OG /C/ OGs in draft, as that would be tough. BEsides we need some room to get CBs, LBs, and of course EDGE. The Edge situation didn't improve with Ansah getting tagged. So we will see . Maybe the combine helps us out some more. The idea of twin LBs to create our pass rush is intriguing, in that we are without LBs at present. And Reuben i hope you have read every printed word about you, and hope that you understand what your actions have set in motion. You were in the catbird's seat and yet likely end up with a very lengthy suspension...at the least. C'mon, man, get it together, and help the team that helped you.
Sounds like Kyle/john probably aren't burning a high rd draft pick on a RB, which is as it should be. Nor are we likely to burn a high pick on a tall WR for use at and on the goal line. If one should fall to us....well fine...Instead we got OL(OG C. OG) in FA and draft using both to fix our holes. Just because we signed Kilgore doesn't mean we are not still in the market...and Nelson in draft would sure be nice. But at # 9-10? Doubt he'll ever make it past 4-6, but one never knows.
Also the LEO / EDGE is right up there with OLs in need, but seomedoby has to drop to us to get the best in Draft, or we have to get lucky in FA. Seems nobody who has a good EDGE is anxious to get rid of him. Dang it. A surprise in draft could come from combine about to get underway.
Based on this and the calming down of the WR crowd, at least early on and focusing in on a 6'4" tall, wide , humungous jumper with great hands, a la jimmy graham type, is the only WR we actually do need. Remember jimmy averaged over 300 yds/game and never threw one pass to Garçon..
LBs are a real red hot poker for us.WE are now at zERO LBs...ie, we need 3 starters. Malcom may change this but right now, we need 3 LBs starters. Ouch. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. Whatever this is not good news. A LB based pass rush can take the place of a superb. EDGE guy. Sadly we have neither one. Combine will help us here...i hope. I
It sounds kind of like this is the path Kyle & John are taking. All to the good. Now we just have to wait and sweat it out.

This is a bit depressing! Of these players there are only a few who have proven themselves to be very good to elite NFL guys--Staley and...OK...Staley. Many are too young to judge but sheesh! Sad!
On a separate note, there are many players on this list I'd easily say goodbye to if they could upgrade--Lynch, Carradine, Johnson, Mostert, Beadles...OK...almost all of them.
A few I'd keep-Hyde, Celek, Ward, Tartt, Pinion, Nelson, and all the guys who were drafted in the past three years...maybe. The DL guys are pretty solid if they can find an elite pass rusher.
Edit: I hated the OL under Harbaugh and believe they wasted 1st round picks on Davis and Iupati. Those guys were not great pass blockers, which would be a high priority in a 1st round OL. So...I'm not as down on our OL as some given JG's quick release and Shanahan's ability to help with playcalling.

Gary Gilliam just resigned for 2 years. Smart insurance for Brown. Coyle is probably next...maybe Tank?

Okay, I'll play along.
CB×2 - Rashaad Melvin & Bashaud Breeland
LEO - Adrian Clayborn
G×2 - Justin Pugh & Josh Kline
SAM - Nigel Bradham
WR - Donte Moncrief
RB - Jerick McKinnon
TE - Jimmy Graham
My apologies, I added TE because IMO, I feel like we're going to get Jimmy some help in the redzone, our TE group rn is mediocre at best, and Kittle can't stay healthy.
Not expecting to sign all of them, but 3 or 4 of those guys would make me

Probably ought to put a C in there also. I think you just overlooked it.
Unlike draft we can be doing 2 things at once here, and that means we could be talking to and hopefully signing a CB, LEO , and C all at the same time. The different format of multiple deals going on simultaneously means we can bring the RZ WR into the conversation early on as long as we have convos with CB,LEOs, OGs, LBs(3) , Centers, and RBs all going on simultaneously. Also FA means that just because someone else bagged our LEO, eg, that doesn't affect us with the next pick. We still got pedal to the medal on all the other 7 slots continuing. Losing a propspect has no effect on our plans down the road, totally opposite of draft, where one pick may mean redoing our entire board.
I am betting on Norwell, altho expensive , it gives us one established all pro for sure in the OL. Huge advantage in that. ZBS, however, he isn't the perfect match. I still see us signing a C, and at least 1 OG. The LEO deal is to at least get one guy. If that is Attaochu, well that is great.
My main goal in FA would be to be sure we had guys better than what we have now. IF not, then don't talk to them Anyone we talk with has to be improvement over Kilgore, Fsco, and Laken. If equal, not interested. We got our "backups". Anything else has to be a starter. LEOs is diifferent because we have none. But he bettter be a player.
CB, we need a starter from here or draft, and Tremaine Johnson would be fine. I would like to get a potential starter here so we can move around in draft and not have to take somebody , anybody. Only BPA at one of our 5 positions, OG, C, CB, LEO, and 3 LBs.
LB...anybody at all who is a starter, i would want him badly in FA. We need 3. No favorites, but any starter...i want him. WR for EZ...if there is one, take him. RB, same thing. But he has to be better than Brieda and can carry the ball as well as catch it....oh plus he better know how to block.
LB issue i would be less aggressive, and if the guy can start at any of the 3 positions, take him. Realistically Reuben is out at least half a season, maybe more. And that would be good news. He still may not end up on the squad but i truly hope he can stay. Not knowing what happened and what ultimately was agreed to have happened, i just hope for the best...but we need 3 LBs. Ugh.

JImmy G to Jimmy G. As much as I don't want to add Graham, this does sound good.

That's awesome. Glad you added TE. This would be a terrific FA period indeed!

This is just a free agency guesstimate. Since we signed Kilgore to what amounts to a 1 year deal, it signals we'll draft a C and he'll train behind Kilgore until ready.
LEO...absolutely nothing out there in FA so we're forced to go the draft route there too (which also, is pretty weak).

I agree with almost everything you posted, I'd just add and modify one or two things. I'd like to get better players, sure, but I'd also be open to getting *younger* players - even if they aren't quite as good as the players we have already on the team. I agree, we need to plug in a free agent to replace Reuben's snaps this next year as I'm pretty sure he'll be unavailable for a good chunk of 2019 or the 2020 season (if he appeals). Now I don't think you need to go with a highly paid free agent to replace Reuben. I think - if you can't find that good all around free agent LB - then you go with a good run defender LB and a good pass defender LB (both probably below average LB's overall) and you can do situation substitution defense with those two LB's. Also, as much as I'd like a free agent corner, I'd rather prioritize the O Line in this years free agency. If you can save a draft pick because you got a decent O Lineman, you can devote that to a young corner in the draft. As for LEO, aside from Ziggy and Demarcus, there aren't any sure fire edge rushers out there (so says the draft nerds) so you go with youth and potential and draft one in the draft and let it all shake out in training camp and preseason.

Originally posted by NCommand:Agree! Nice insight again. I think one of the reasons that Eli is being tried at Edge rusher is because our new coach Chris Kiffen saw something and suggested it to Saleh, John and Kyle. The Kiffen gap penetration scheme relies on very quick but *undersized* D Linemen that can blow through the gap and screw up the run blocking schemes and also to pressure the passer. Everybody is looking for an edge rusher like Aldon Smith 2.0 in the draft (a guy that's 260 and can run like an Olympic sprinter and bench press elephants). I think with Kiffen now our pass rush coach, the 49ers maybe are looking for an undersized DE, more akin to Fred Dean than Reggie White specially if all the elite edge rushers are gone by the 9th or 10th pick.

Either Garnett is one of the answers or he might be a draft day trade possibility. Imagine trading him to a power line team for a 2nd rounder. Maybe a trade with Miami for WR Landry? That would be rather sweet. He's not a bust...yet. But seems better suited for a different scheme. If he can adapt to Shanahan's scheme then we are one step closer to a solid OL.
And as mentioned...a need for a center. Baltimore has two good centers so I could see a trade for their starter if they lock both up. Jensen is a free agent unless he is franchised...and as one of the best centers in the league that is not out of the question. They traded for Bowanko last year to back up Jensen so they aren't strapped if Jensen leaves. Starting to get excited as the combine gets going!
