Jimmie Gilbert - Malcolm Smith - Donavin Newsome
Prince Charles Iworah/Will Redmond - Chanceller James/Asa Jackson

Yeah, it certainly makes you appreciate the coaches more working under those circumstances.

Cam Inman did a little roster analysis for 2018. Do you agree?
http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/11/17/49ers-in-2018-whos-in-whos-out-whos-auditioning/
Quarterback
Best bets: Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. Beathard
Not sure/Doubtful: N/A
Analysis: By winning his last start in impressive and cohesive fashion, Beathard could further delay Garoppolo's debut. Garoppolo does not need to audition for 2018, as the brass is convinced he can be their franchise quarterback for years to come, even if a franchise tag is needed to retain him in 2018 if no multi-year deal is reached.
Running back
Best bets: Matt Breida.
Not sure: Carlos Hyde, Joe Williams (IR), Raheem Mostert
Doubtful: N/A
Analysis: Hyde will have a nice pay day if he avoids serious injury the final six games, but who's paying? The 49ers have yet to strike an extension, and he could find a better suitor or playoff-ready team in free agency. Breida has shown spark as a rookie backup but must improve on his league-low average of 1.15 yards-after-contact, per ESPN's stats. Williams, a fourth-round pick, went on IR before his rookie season and better look, um, better in 2018. Mostert has had mixed production on special teams.
Wide receiver
Best bets: Pierre Garçon, Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor.
Not sure: Aldrick Robinson, Kendrick Bourne, Victor Bolden
Doubtful: Aaron Burbridge (IR), Louis Murphy
Analysis: Garçon is a go-to, possession receiver and hopefully recovers well from an Oct. 29 neck fracture. The 49ers need a more dominant threat, but No. 1s are tough to find. As evident as Goodwin's deep-route ability is, it took 10 games for his first touchdown. They need more than three catches per game from the slot, where Taylor has been OK as a rookie.
Tight end
Best bets: George Kittle, Garrett Celek.
Not sure: Cole Hikutini (IR)
Doubtful: Logan Paulsen
Analysis: Kittle's drops are a concern in what's been an injury-plagued year. Celek has been the steady pro that won him a roster spot. Hikutini needs to bulk up. A second-day draft pick could be needed here.
Offensive line
Best bets: Joe Staley, Trent Brown.
Not sure: Joshua Garnett (IR), Daniel Kilgore, Brandon Fusco, Erik Magnuson, Darrell Williams Jr.
Doubtful: Zane Beadles, Garry Gilliam (IR), Laken Tomlinson
Analysis: Sunday's win was the line's best showing in years. It also showed how much passion Staley still has in his 11th year. Brown merits an extension and eventually can succeed Staley at left tackle. Kilgore is a pending free agent who should be re-signed, as his knowledge of the complex system should help Garoppolo (or Beathard). Fusco has been durable and occasionally solid. Tomlinson's 2018 salary: $1.6 million.
Defensive line
Best bets: DeForest Buckner, Solomon Thomas, Arik Armstead (IR), Earl Mitchell, Ronald Blair
Not sure: Elvis Dumervil, Leger Douzable, D.J. Jones
Doubtful: Aaron Lynch, Tank Carradine, Chris Jones (IR)
Analysis: Buckner is this unit's MVP, and Thomas will be better in Year 2. Armstead has one year left on his rookie contract, and does this new regime want to exercise his fifth-year option? Dumervil leads the team with 4.5 sacks, and if he wants to keep playing, he carries a $4.25 cap charge for 2018. Carradine will come off IR and audition the final six games.
Linebacker
Best bets: Reuben Foster, Brock Coyle, Malcolm Smith (IR), Dekoda Watson
Not sure: Eli Harold, Pita Taumoepenu
Doubtful: Ray-Ray Armstrong, Mark Nzeocha, Elijah Lee, Jimmie Gilbert (IR), Donavin Newsom (IR)
Analysis: The ideal plan is for Foster to play "Mike" linebacker and Smith return at weak-side linebacker in 2018, though Coyle is faring well of late. Armstrong got phased out defensively the past couple games. Harold has had minimal production (four sacks, 42 games) is under contract through next season.
Cornerback
Best bets: Ahkello Witherspoon, K'Waun Williams
Not sure: Dontae Johnson
Doubtful: Greg Mabin, Leon Hall, Prince Chrales Iworah (IR), Asa Jackson (IR)
Analysis: The 49ers desperately need play-makers or simply more aggressive cornerbacks. Witherspoon can use this second half of his rookie season to secure a long-time starting role. Williams got an in-season extension. Johnson has a three-year interception drought.
Safety
Best bets: Jimmie Ward (IR), Jaquiski Tartt (IR), Adrian Colbert
Not sure: Eric Reid, Chanceller James (IR)
Doubtful: Antone Exum, Don Jones, Dexter McCoil
Analysis: The new regime insists Ward will be a great free safety, but it's hard to keep speculating when he can't stay healthy and when cornerback is a greater need. Tartt and Colbert look solid. Reid brings physicality, maturity and smarts to this unit, but perhaps the 49ers let him test a potential soft market (see: social-activism blowback).
Specialists
Best bets: Robbie Gould (kicker), Bradley Pinion (punter), Kyle Nelson (long snapper)
Analysis: This unit has stayed sharp upon Gould's arrival this season, and all three are signed through 2018, so perhaps an extension or two or three is in order.

I'll do my own early 2018 off season plan:
Quarterback
Best bets: Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. BeatHard
Doubtful: Nick Mullens
Analysis: "We dont need (JG) right now." This is true...contracts take time to work out and there's nothing wrong with developing his backup. JG will either sign a long-term contract over the coming months or be franchised tagged. Look to Kyle to upgrade the #3 with another pro-style QB.
Running back
Best bets: Carlos Hyde, Matt Breida, Kyle Juszczyk, Raheem Mostert
Not sure: Joe Williams
Doubtful: Jeremy McNichols
Analysis: Mostert is one of the best gunners in the game and adds valuable depth. The goal will be to resign Carlos and utilize a revitalized Williams to push Hyde, spell him and keep him honest. Williams now will have a full year of diet, training, conditioning, film room study and mental health support and counseling and there's no denying his talent if he puts it all together. Game on!
Wide receiver
Best bets: Pierre Garçon, Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor, Victor Bolden Jr.
Not sure: Kendrick Bourne
Doubtful: Aldrick Robinson, Louis Murphy, DeAndre Smelter, DeAndre Carter, Aaron Burbridge
Analysis: Bolden Jr. is already one of the best kickoff returners in the game and now adds punt return value too. This is a unit we can expect at least one premier talent from FA or the draft, preferably a bigger-bodied ZWR.
Tight end
Best bets: George Kittle
Not sure: Cole Hikutini
Doubtful: Garett Celek, Logan Paulsen, Cole Wick
Analysis: Kittle is being nicknamed Brittle for a reason. With drops and constant injuries, this is clearly a position that needs to be upgraded. Kittle could be an ideal #2 blocking TE with catching ability. Cole has a legit chance too in a true competition with Kittle.
Offensive line
Best bets: Joe Staley, Trenton Brown
Not sure: Joshua Garnett, Brandon Fusco, Gary Gilliam, Erik Magnuson, Darrell Williams Jr.
Doubtful: Laken Tomlinson, Daniel Kilgore, Zane Beadles, Pace Murphy, John P. Flynn, Cameron Hunt
Analysis: Expect major major overhaul on this unit including its depth. Behind Brown and Staley, I would not be surprised to see 6-8 new players added to this unit. It will be the biggest target in both FA and the draft. Book it.
Defensive line
Best bets: DeForest Buckner, Solomon Thomas, D.J. Jones
Not sure: Earl Mitchell, Tank Carradine, Ronald Blair, Arik Armstead, Leger Douzable, Elvis Dumervil
Doubtful: Datone Jones, Dekoda Watson, Aaron Lynch, Pita Taumoepenu, Noble Nwachukwu, Chris Jones
Analysis: It's very possible all of those players in the 'Not sure' category will be back. Tank is exceptional as a Big End (BE) and Saleh loves him. Blair plays there too and adds some edge rush with nice size. But if Thomas is the future at BE, he could make Tank, Blair and/or Douzable expendable. This team badly needs true speed edge rushers to help close the 3rd most QB pressures from the inside with sacks. That is a premier need in both FA and the draft.
Linebacker
Best bets: Reuben Foster, Malcolm Smith, Brock Coyle
Not sure: Eli Harold, Elijah Lee, Ray-Ray Armstrong
Doubtful: Mark Nzeocha, Jimmie Gilbert, Donavin Newsome
Analysis: Brock adds valuable depth in this scheme and is excellent on ST. But I'd expect a big upgrade at the SAM over Harold with a player who has excellent range, true edge rush ability and can seal the edge effectively as an every down player. Depth will be needed. The team is high on Elijah Lee.
Cornerback
Best bets: Ahkello Witherspoon, K'Waun Williams
Not sure: Dontae Johnson, Leon Hall, Asa Jackson
Doubtful: Antone Exum Jr., Tyvis Powell, Prince Charles Iworah, Greg Mabin
Analysis: Witherspoon continues to grow and Williams just signed a long-term contract. Johnson, Hall and Jackson seem like valuable depth and ST contributors. But this too will be a major target in FA and the draft.
Safety
Best bets: Adrian Colbert, Jaquiski Tartt
Not sure: Eric Reid, Jimmie Ward, Chanceller James
Doubtful: Dexter McCoil, Don Jones
Analysis: It's obvious you can't count on Ward for any starter position whether that's in the slot, outside or at safety and the team seems to be ready for the youth movement in Colbert and Tartt and probably plan on letting Reid go in FA. Ward could still be retained for depth and the team was high on James until he went out.
Specialists
Best bets: Kyle Nelson, Robbie Gould, Bradley Pinion
KOR: Victor Bolden Jr. & Raheem Mostert
PR: Trent Taylor; Victor Bolden Jr.
GR: Raheem Mostert & Adrian Colbert
Analysis: This is an excellent unit and very young. It's set for a long time with only Gould needing to be addressed in the near future. Bolden Jr. is already one of the better kickoff returners in the NFL and is now adding quality punt returns as well. Mostert and Colbert might be the two best gunner-duo in the game thanks to Pinion's height on his points and league-leading punts inside the 20 (23).
Total

I agree, son...quite a few of those guys will be retained and become legit players or at least, add quality depth, like you said.
If I had to guess, I'd say of the 23 in that category, 12+ will be retained. That means going into next year, that's 38-40 players are keepers and in year 2, we can expect another 13+ players to the mix of 53.
That's much more manageable than what the FO had to turnover this past off-season.

Agree one hunnit... Year 2 leaps are nothing to sneeze at either. Part of me wants to bring back the crew besides Reid.. Get a C,G,WR and CB in FA and were setup for a legit draft

Any guesses?
John Lynch said the 49ers are in contract discussions with a few players, but wouldn't specify who.

I really really have a feeling that it's gonna be a fun circus at the old CAMELOT when it comes to draft time.. and w/teams gasping to land the QBs, we are gonna be everyhones BFF come Draft Day.
for sample...
I see the Browns drafting Saqoan then coming back to us to land a QB.
The Giants can wait til the 2nd round because of they took Webb last year.
The Jets on the other hand, did no purposely fold this year NOT to land Rosen.. or even Randolph...
The Saints know that Brees isn't getting any younger and this would be the time to develop a young QB... The Saints and the Broncos will have a non stop offering or a bid of war for our spot especially if Darnold or the kid from Wyoming is still there..
and while both Miami and the Chargers are waiting for everyone to clear the clouds, they will keep it quiet and try to sneak up and make for another trade w/us to land a Wentz clone from Rivers alma mater.
and just when you think that Lynch and Shanny are ready to draft a RB similar to Warrick Dunn or even Freeman (Atlanta) in Stanford's LOVE, the Steel City comes in calling to offer us either DeCastro or Pouncey and their 1st rounder so that they can draft the future replacement of Big Ben..
NOW, ...... HOW DO YOU LIKE IT ????

John Lynch said the 49ers are in contract discussions with a few players, but wouldn't specify who.

Yeah, it's going to be really interesting indeed. We have the only backup QB that teams may be very interested in. Then, like you said, we should end up in prime position to trade back with a team that badly needs a QB.
