Yes we do. I was joking saying our I.R. team could destroy our current starting 22. Ha

There are a couple guys I would really love to see succeed on this list...OK, all of them...but to pick a couple favorites--Smelter for his history of excelling and then being hampered by injury, Harold who is known for great character and leadership qualities, and Blair because he is from a small school (Appalachian St...a school that occasionally supplies really nice NFL players).

Edit: Smelter, for those who do not know his history, was destined to be a MLB player but hurt his shoulder. Concentrating on football he became the type of receiver who goes after passes with a gusto and takes the ball, rather than just receiving it. Plus...his size is a great asset. Oh well...I can always hope!

I'm pretty done with Harold at this point. I want a SAM who can be an every down player and bring some serious heat off the edge.

Absolutely would love to see Smaller get a chance. He plays the Z like Garcon. And he was starting to look like he was turning the corner by the end of pre season.

We'll finally get a look at Blair at BE. I really liked how Tank played there so if Blair can shine there now, we'll have a great rotation there!

Redmond was cut I believe.

Love the youth and it might be advisable for them to bring in some really high character FAs. They could even make a trade or two for guys who would like to play for Shanahan?

Yeah, that was a copy from last week. Thanks.

These are who we should focus on the final 8 games:

QB: C.J. Beathard
TE: Cole Hikutini
ZWR: Kendrick Bourne & DeAndre Smelter
LOT: Trenton Brown
RG: Erik Magnuson
ROT: Darrell Williams
SAM: Eli Harold
BE: Ronald Blair
NER: Pita Taumoepenu
MIKE: Reuben Foster
WILL: Elijah Lee
RCB: Ahkello Witherspoon
FS: Adrian Colbert

This is the future of the 49ers. I hope these kids make the best of it.

For sure...I didn't include players like Kittle and Breida as it's safe to say they've got plenty of snaps to evaluate them and feel good about them for next year.

The list above is more for players we need to see at different positions (i.e. Brown at LT), more of (i.e. Cole) or get their first snaps (Williams and Smelter).

The only good thing about the injury bug is that it expedited the snap counts for all the young players.
IMHO, these are the positions we need big updates this free agency and draft:

QB: Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. BeatHard
RB1: Carlos Hyde, Joe Williams
RB2: Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert
OW: Kyle Juszczyk
TE: George Kittle, Cole Hikutini, Garett Celek
XWR: Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin
YWR: Trent Taylor, Victor Bolden Jr., Aaron Burbridge
ZWR: Aldrick Robinson, Kendrick Bourne, DeAndre Smelter
LOT: Joe Staley, Darrell Williams Jr.
LG: Laken Tomlinson, Joshua Garnett
C: Daniel Kilgore
RG: Brandon Fusco, Erik Magnuson

ROT: Trenton Brown, Gary Gilliam
SAM: Eli Harold
LDE: Solomon Thomas, Tank Carradine, Datone Jones, Ronald Blair
NT: Earl Mitchell, D.J. Jones
RDT: DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Tony McDaniel
LEO/NER: Leger Douzable, Elvis Dumervil, Dekoda Watson, Aaron Lynch, Pita Taumoepenu
MIKE: Reuben Foster, Brock Coyle
WILL: Malcolm Smith, Elijah Lee, Ray-Ray Armstrong
RCB: Dontae Johnson
S/CB: K'Waun Williams, Leon Hall
LCB: Ahkello Witherspoon
FS: Jimmie Ward, Adrian Colbert
SS: Jaquiski Tartt, Eric Reid

Hey NCommand~ First, I agree with your assessment of the team's needs. Question...if you were in the Niners' front office, would you move Jimmie Ward back to CB next season or would you keep him at FS? My feeling is that he is too fragile to be a S and given that the Niners need another CB i the worst way, I'm thinking that he should go back to the corner or slot. Your thoughts?
To the post above. I'd rather move on from Jimmie, we're going to be paying Jimmie $8.5M next year(hope he's cut) if they want him to be a corner I'd rather just use the money on someone that's played corner full time and not as injury prone like Maybe a Fuller, Breeland or Butler. It's not like he's played corner at a great level anyways. I don't trust Ward and his health issues.
I have no idea what is going to happen with Ward, but between injuries and cover breakdowns, I would rather move on.

I also hope, after Reuben who I liked, that we never again take a shot at a guy who is injured. I know frank was an exception, but overall, it tends to load your IR list up to oh, say average, 18-21/yr. We gotta get past this. And adding Eli's or the like, or staying with a guy one season after another is just keeping a healthy guy off the roster. We gotta move on from this potential diamond in the rough...except he is injured at present. That is just killing us. It is just an awful idea.

Tough one here. The coaches really like him at FS and feel he got a very late start and was just starting to come on. That said, we know whether he's at the slot, outside CB or FS, this guy can't be relied on to stay healthy and this is the final year of his contract. I'd offer him a modest contract just above backup money but I'd try my best to upgrade in the draft or free agency and let them compete, if he's willing to accept the deal.

Might be easier to list what they don't need.

I have more players on I.R. than the 53.
Major Needs
RB (Hyde is a FA)
C (Kilgore is a FA)
OG (Fusco is a FA; uncertainty if Garnett is a fit)
LEO (AA not a fit; Thomas is better suited for big DE)
CB (DJ is a FA)
WR (Garcon needs some help)

Excluded:
QB (Garoppolo will be extended or tagged)
Big DE (Tank is a FA, but Thomas should play there)
SS (Reid is a FA but Tartt is now starter)

Thank God. Kilgore is the first thing that stood out(Jensen). Fusco isn't as bad as people say at worse competition for next year. DJ competition for team friendly deal(Breeland/Fuller 2nd tier). I think Tartt makes Reid expendable. No way I see D Lawrence available but if he is, go get him

I wouldn't say RB is a major need. The NFL, especially Shanny's offense, their RB's are plug and play. If it was a major need, then I wouldn't spend any draft capital acquiring one.

They need an ADDITIONAL OG. Garnett is unproven but they need a RG and LG.

They need another book end lineman. A Leo is nice but what makes a front 7 so good is their abililty to rush the passer from both sides. Right now, they cannot generate any pressure anywhere.

I would say they need at least 1 CB, but maybe two. Witherspoon is unproven so I don't have faith in him. But I would get a CB this offseason and maybe another one NEXT offseason.

I think what this team truly lacks is a big bodied WR. They have three solid WR's in Taylor, Garcon and Goodwin, but they need that mismatch in the redzone. Bryant from the Steelers would be an ideal fit. (skill set wise)

Thomas isn't a DE, he's an undersized DT. With that said, I hope he pans out.

I think what is missing from your list is a complimentary TE to go with Kittle. I think someone like Eifert could fit that bill.
