Can't we keep him and get bettter and younger at the same time?

Let's say we carry 7 LBs on the 53.

Bowman
Ray-Ray
M. Smith
Brooks
Carl Bradford
Tank (moved to Leo?)
Harold (moved to Leo?)
Aaron Lynch (moved to Leo?)
McManis
Shayne Skov
Draft pick?
Draft Pick?

Who do you see as the 7?

We can keep him this year but was just saying that he is gone in 2018 no matter what. So IF we upgrade to a point where he is not needed then he may be cut. Right now the only locks would be Bowman, Malcolm Smith (if signed), and Lynch. Ray-Ray, Brooks, Harold, Tank are next and I'd say we'll bring in another 1 or 2 FA's and the same for draft picks.

Ok, so this is who we're going to sign or have already signed/re-signed.

QB Brian Hoyer
FB Kyle Juszczyk
WR Pierre Garcon
WR Jeremy Kerley
WR Marquise Goodwin
NT Earl Mitchell
LB Malcolm Smith
CB K'Wuan Williams

This is how I see our roster right now.

QB- Brian Hoyer
RB- Carlos Hyde
FB- Kyle Juszczyk
WR- Pierre Garcon
WR- N/A
WR- Jeremy Kerley/Marquise Goodwin
TE- Vance McDonald/Garrett Celek/Blake Bell
C- Daniel Kilgore
LG- Zane Beadles
RG- Joshua Garnett
LT- Joe Staley/John Theus
RT- Trent Brown

LEO- Aaron Lynch/Tank Carradine
NT- Earl Mitchell
DT- DeForest Buckner/Quinton Dial
DE- Arik Armstead/Ronald Blair
OLB- Malcolm Smith/Eli Harold
MLB- NaVorro Bowman
OLB- Ray-Ray Armstrong
CB- Rashard Robinson/Dontae Johnson
CB- Tramaine Brock
CB- K'Wuan Williams/Will Redmond
FS- Jimmie Ward
SS- Eric Reid/Jaquiski Tartt

PK- N/A
P- Bradley Pinion or Brock Miller
LS- Kyle Nelson

So obviously we still need another starting WR, possibly a C and/or OG(either LG or RG), a LEO, another NT, maybe another OLB(I don't know where Brooks fits in this defense), a CB if Brock is let go, a backup FS, and a PK.

My FA Targets.

WR Alshon Jeffrey
WR Terrelle Pryor
TE Jacob Tamme
C J.C. Tretter
OG Larry Walford
OG Kevin Zietler
NT Brandon Williams
NT Dontari Poe
NT Johnathan Hankins
OLB Dont'a Hightgower
CB A.J. Bouye
PK Phil Dawson (Probably the only 49er I'd re-sign)

Even though I'd only re-sign Dawson, I wouldn't be against Gerald Hodges being back, but on a cheap deal.

Agreed. Those are by far the only two I'd re-sign. And I am probably a little higher on Hodges. I haven't heard much of us being connected to Nick Perry, but I'd love to see his tires get kicked.

Agree to y'all but still think Brooks has a shot at SAM, on top of being a situational pass rusher.
I want Pryor in SF, but does anyone else hope that Josh Gordon gets reinstated and finds his way to the bay?😎😎😎
Pick one to add to the new and improved WR corp: Terrelle Pryor, Josh Gordon, Mike Williams, Corey Davis
I disagreed with cutting torrey smith since he had blaine kap throwing him passes the past two years here. Since then we added a WR who plays similar to torrey so I am ok with our direction. But I would also disagree with cutting brooks right now for mostly the same reason as I was against cutting T Smith at the time. There isn't another player on this roster right now that is a better at getting to the QB, setting the edge and dropping into coverage than brooks right now. Cutting him might be the economical thing to do but we really don't have a clear cut replacement for his spot unless we ask malcolm smith to play the strong side which I don't think is his best position. Lynch is a fatty and doesn't play well in space, tank is a bad joke for an olb, Eli Harold doesn't play well in space either nor does he set the edge very well. Right now, brooks is still a part of our best 11.

Unless we sign another FA who can play the sam or draft someone, we should hold onto brooks until we actually have someone who will play better than brooks can. If we end up drafting someone for the sam spot, we can always cut brooks before the 53 is set.

Good call...just did that (then saw your post). Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

I think you got it, brother! I also wouldn't mind signing LDE Chris Jones back as well to spell Buckner. That frees up Dial to sub in more at NT.

Britt agreed to terms with Cleveland which probably means Pryor is out of there. We'll see..

Hopefully, he's coming out West.
Update:

Potential cap space:
$100,429,224 (includes Kaepernick and Earl Mitchell's deals) + T.Smith's ($4.675M) & Bethea's ($5.75M) + M.Martin ($1.797M) + potential cuts in Brooks ($5.3M) & Brock ($3.55M) = $121.5M

Less:
YWR Jeremy Kerley - 3 years, $10.5M ($3.5M)
XWR Pierre Garcon - 3 years, $XM ($16M first year; $23M over first 2 years; $? 3rd year) ($9.5M)
QB Brian Hoyer - 2 years, $12M ($6M)
XWR Marquise Goodwin - 2 years, $8M ($4M)
FB Kyle Juszczyk - 4 years, $21M ($5.25M)
SAM/WILL Malcolm Smith - 5 years, $26.5M ($4.3M)
TE Logan Paulsen - ??
PK Robbie Gould - ??

= $32.5M = $89M (before Logan Paulsen; expected $3M & Robbie Gould: expected $2M)

I think Brooks goes to Sam and Smith goes to WILL ahead of Armstrong.

Still have a ton of room to make more moves.

LOL. We've only spent $33M of the $38M we rolled over from last year. Classic.
