I think there is a big spot for Alfred in Raheem's defense. He's a run stuffer (supposedly, and I do hope he does get back to form after those shoulder injuries in post season). But if Alfred is healthy, he'd be a great nose tackle in the 3-4 under defense if Raheem goes from a wide 9 to a 3-4 defense. I like how with the personnel Raheem has, he can kind of shift between different fronts (3-4; 4-3; Wide 9). What he's missing is that enforcer in the back, the John Lynch, Nick Emmanwori kind of rangy smart hybrid LB/Safety player.

Collins biggest weakness is his pad level and firing off the ball with his hands. Playing nose in an odd front(ie a 3-4) where you're head up on the center is like playing in a phone booth meaning that it's a confined space where things happen quickly. That doesn't suit Collins' strengths at all. He'd be much better at 4i where he can give himself a little more space, time and use his reach.

CJ West would be my choice at nose in an odd front. He's got that natural leverage with get off and quick hands. He just needs to shake that rust off.

It remains to be see how much base 5-man front stuff the 49ers are actually going to use. I didn't see much(if any) during the preseason. It was the typical base wide 9.

Personally, I think both Alfred Collins and CJ West can play the Wide 9 tackle position the way I think Saleh would have wanted it. Both have the power to anchor and hold ground, and have some lateral and gap penetrating agility. I think that's what Saleh would want in his Wide 9 Tackles. As for the 3-4, I agree, I think neither would work out as 3i technique under the Kiffen/Carroll defensive concepts. But either could be the Strong Side End in the 4-3 under scheme. Morris needed that three-technique tackle to man the weakside guard-tackle gap (if using the 4-3 under) so he drafted Halton and got Osa. Getting/drafting Halton and Osa would not have been a high priority (I would think) for a Saleh.

I think Saleh and Raheem have similar ideas with regards to manufactured pressure - they will use gap penetrating four man line, and zone blitzing, and gap penetration stunts. The difference is Saleh would use more zone blitzing from the linebacker squad, and Raheem will be zone blitzing more from the DB squad.

I would think everything would change. I can see the difference in picks with Saleh and the 2025 draft and the Raheem 2026 draft. Some differences: the 2026 draft the linebackers and defensive backs were drafted for the length of their arms and their versatility. I.e. some of the 2026 players have played multiple positions and have a *hybrid* kind of physique. They don't quite fit into any particularly stereotype weight, size, strength kind of model for a particular position. Saleh seems to go more with speed vs size (Nick Martin for example vs Jaden Dugger). Mykel and Alfred are more 4-3 kind of guys. Big strong can hold ground. Gracen is more of a tweener 3tech DT and can play some DE (in a 3-4 kind of alignment).

I'm hoping in 2027, Raheem can find a Nick Emmanwori clone. I think that's a critical piece in Raheem's defense because he comes from that Monte Kiffen, Tony Dungy gap penetration defense on the front side and cover two backside. If Raheem can find that Ronnie Lott/John Lynch style safety/linebacker that can cover and also stuff the run, this defense can be as good as the Dynasty Year's super bowl defenses.

I'm torn on where I think the team sees themselves.

Going into 2018 I felt really strong about the direction of the team when everyone was complaining about their "you don't just replace a Cassius Marsh" comments. That smelled like pure BS and the team was looking ahead to 2019 to address their critical needs at edge rusher and they did just that and in one offseason turned us from a laughing stock to a dominant defense.

Looking at this roster I see a clear problem at S and uncertainty at CB with LG being the huge concern on offense. This was a very weak S FA class. Next year's FA class looks much better and I can definitely see us addressing that position then or maybe even at the trade deadline(Atlanta...looking at you)

The question is...will we grab one high enough to increase our chances of a good pick or will we try to develop a tools guy who may or may not hit?

But it's hard to say cuz we did sign some older guys and clearly have older guys we don't have great transition plan to - Trent, Evans, Kittle, Brendel. Impact players over 30 and no real guys of worth behind them. Hopefully Stribling gives us a WR1 candidate long term at least. So is the team looking ahead to 2027 to make a serious run or do they think we have enough pieces now to really go for it with those holes at S, LG? Guess we'll see in a week or so.

I think finding that safety/linebacker hybrid is going to be important for Raheem. Because of that, I think they will put some high value draft capital for Raheem next year, we shall see.

I think the back end safety play is important to a pass defense. Ronnie Lott and John Lynch are hall of fame players because of the system they were in. These guys were generational players on top of the systems they played in. If you can get one, and put them in a good system, your back end defense gets so much more solid. I think that's the difference between Kyle and Bill Walsh - Walsh had that generational player at the back end of the defense. Both have the edge rusher (Dean/Haley, Bosa/Ford) But Kyle's defenses never really had the back end hybrid safety/Linebacker that Walsh had. Hopefully now that will change because of Raheem -- Kyle will be looking for that unique Hybrid Safety talent like what we had during the dynasty days with Lott and Jeff Fuller, and John Lynch under Monte Kiffen.

Kiffen's cover two defense relied on John Lynch muddying the QB pre-snap reads, because John could be the 8th man on a 8 man front for the run defense, or drop back and cover the WR's and TE's on a cover 3 (changing Kiffen's base cover 2 shell). In other words, Kiffen interchanged the CB's and Safties assignments to screw up the QB's coverage reads. I don't think Kiffen really blitzed much, because of his personnel and the fact that he used gap penetration stunts to great effect - in other words his four man lines could generate needed pressure. He didn't need to blitz. Nowadays, everybody blitzes - that's the Mike McDonald copy cat effect. Mike Macdonald uses hybrid safeties the way Seifert used Lott and Jeff Fuller - in my opinion. Hopefully Raheem can do the same sooner rather than later.

No I didn't but I know a lot of parents aren't letting their kids play tackle football. Flag football is on the rise. There's only so much the NFL and colleges can do to limit injuries and brain damage. They improved helmets but until they get serious about the use of supplements that promote growth the violent collisions are going to continue. The difference between 280 lb men and 320--330 lb men colliding is significant.

Ban PEDS. Near the end of the 80's peds entered the sport big time. Look at the damn size and speed of these guys compared to back then. I get the sport would become more "boring" in many aspects, but we would see injuries go down significantly, especially head related.

You can't. It's literally impossible. I hate to break it to you guys, but everyone in professional sports is on PEDs. This ain't your grandpappy's world where people were pumping only anabolic steroids. This new age s**t is different ie peptides, growth hormones, sarms, stims, etc.

Personally, I think they should do the opposite and allow everything. Full transparency under medical supervision. No more playing this dumbass game of pretending athletes making millions of dollars are clean(they're not).

I know brother, and it's not just the NFL, also college and even HS. It is sadly endemic. But if we're being honest in regards to CTE, the noggin was never intended for a 320lb man to be able to hit you at 4.4 speed etc. It's just silly.

Baseball largely banned it. Now look at the hitters, they blow LOL It is def more boring, but then there's the bs analytics that's ruined sports as well.

Oh, trust me, I have a little cousin playing high school football who is on test and every peptide in the book. Dude is 17 and jacked out of his mind but looks like he's pushing 30.

In regards to CTE, I don't disagree with you. The brain isn't intended to take hits period. In my eyes, it's a major risk you accept when you partake in any contact sports.

you're telling me this isn't how you get a bag ass neck?

I'd like to see him trade `27 first round pick to Colts for Quentin Nelson.
