I know you're the local DL expert but I'm not ready to call it with Collins and West(though I wasn't a huge fan of Collins in the draft, he hit a need but I personally preferred Darius Alexander at DT there but felt we should've gone with Will Johnson, Aireontae Ersery or Donovan Ezeiruaku/Mike Green position need be damned) still I think he can get it together. He was a slow starter last year too but came on to make some impact plays for us. Certainly not the Chris Jones like 2nd year many of us were hoping for but I'll see what he can do this year before being out on him.

Like I said before I tend to give guys who battle through injuries to make impact plays for us more rope to hang themselves.

We'll see what Mykel does when he comes back and long term. His career is far from over. He's what 22? Still one of the youngest guys on our roster. Martin was my least favorite pick and unfortunately he hasn't shown much to make us feel otherwise but the class still has potential to help us with quality depth at worst.

I would've been curious to see last year's draft class without Saleh making those defensive picks.

Whoa, I'm definitely not a DL expert. Just a guy who played at a very unremarkable level and loves the craft.

I still have faith in CJ West as a quality run stopper. I attribute his underwhelming play to rust and think he'll bounce back with more reps. I wish I could say the same for Alfred. There's are some very concerning aspects to his game that I'm not sure will remedy with time.

I always thought Mykel was a long term project, so I'm still onboard with him. It just sucks that he's not going to be taking a step forward this season.

The Niners are tied with the Eagles for the 5th best W-L record since 2019. I use that year because it's the first year after Lynch and Kyle rebuilt that terrible roster. They've been in the playoffs every year except the 2 times they had major injuries. 4 NFC conference title games and 2 SBs. I know they lost thise SB games but they've still been way better than most of the league. Lynch and Kyle must be doing something right. They missed on some high draft picks but they've hit on some mid and late round picks. Sure they got lucky when they drafted Purdy. Probably the greatest overall last pick in history. But if they were lucky with Purdy and Warner they were just as unluckey with some of the firs grounders like Lance, Foster, Pearsall and Aiyuk. Serious injuries derailed 3 of those 4 and Lance ws thrown into a bad situation. Most people viewed him as a project but he was forced to start sooner than expected . He wasn't ready and then suffered an injury.

I just think that Lynch has done a pretty good job overall. Missed in sme high picks. Hit on some lower picks. Made a couple of big trades (Williams and CMC) and signed some good free agents. Maybe they could find a better GM but they could also do a lot worse. Not a lot of good GMs available on Amazon.

Some people will look facts right in the face and still ignore them.

I've said for a while that the team would be better off going with a proper GM and move John to a different role or just move on from him. But I listed the players the regime has added with Lynch as the GM. There is no denying what they've done OVERALL. Something TD seems to gloss over for his agenda.

We are still tied at the top for most All Pros selected since 2017. Yes the recent drafts haven't been great and we need the last few to turn it around and those guys to stay healthy and play well.

Add in the huge whiff with Trey Lance and I think if we're being real we all understand the odds of success dropped since we lost premium draft picks but kept winning lots of games until the 2024 season.

Mykel Williams is far from a finished product and unfortunately a big injury is holding him back.

Overall they've done well, the problem is lately the results haven't been great and clearly they don't do a good job drafting as well when they think they don't have as many holes and they need to adjust their way of thought or switch GMs so the new guy adjusts it for them.

I would think everything would change. I can see the difference in picks with Saleh and the 2025 draft and the Raheem 2026 draft. Some differences: the 2026 draft the linebackers and defensive backs were drafted for the length of their arms and their versatility. I.e. some of the 2026 players have played multiple positions and have a *hybrid* kind of physique. They don't quite fit into any particularly stereotype weight, size, strength kind of model for a particular position. Saleh seems to go more with speed vs size (Nick Martin for example vs Jaden Dugger). Mykel and Alfred are more 4-3 kind of guys. Big strong can hold ground. Gracen is more of a tweener 3tech DT and can play some DE (in a 3-4 kind of alignment).

I'm hoping in 2027, Raheem can find a Nick Emmanwori clone. I think that's a critical piece in Raheem's defense because he comes from that Monte Kiffen, Tony Dungy gap penetration defense on the front side and cover two backside. If Raheem can find that Ronnie Lott/John Lynch style safety/linebacker that can cover and also stuff the run, this defense can be as good as the Dynasty Year's super bowl defenses.

I think there is a big spot for Alfred in Raheem's defense. He's a run stuffer (supposedly, and I do hope he does get back to form after those shoulder injuries in post season). But if Alfred is healthy, he'd be a great nose tackle in the 3-4 under defense if Raheem goes from a wide 9 to a 3-4 defense. I like how with the personnel Raheem has, he can kind of shift between different fronts (3-4; 4-3; Wide 9). What he's missing is that enforcer in the back, the John Lynch, Nick Emmanwori kind of rangy smart hybrid LB/Safety player.

i think they like malik as a guy who can play back and come up and play run, hufanga was great for us obviously he moved on but we may have another one

Collins biggest weakness is his pad level and firing off the ball with his hands. Playing nose in an odd front(ie a 3-4) where you're head up on the center is like playing in a phone booth meaning that it's a confined space where things happen quickly. That doesn't suit Collins' strengths at all. He'd be much better at 4i where he can give himself a little more space, time and use his reach.

CJ West would be my choice at nose in an odd front. He's got that natural leverage with get off and quick hands. He just needs to shake that rust off.

It remains to be see how much base 5-man front stuff the 49ers are actually going to use. I didn't see much(if any) during the preseason. It was the typical base wide 9.

I'm torn on where I think the team sees themselves.

Going into 2018 I felt really strong about the direction of the team when everyone was complaining about their "you don't just replace a Cassius Marsh" comments. That smelled like pure BS and the team was looking ahead to 2019 to address their critical needs at edge rusher and they did just that and in one offseason turned us from a laughing stock to a dominant defense.

Looking at this roster I see a clear problem at S and uncertainty at CB with LG being the huge concern on offense. This was a very weak S FA class. Next year's FA class looks much better and I can definitely see us addressing that position then or maybe even at the trade deadline(Atlanta...looking at you)

The question is...will we grab one high enough to increase our chances of a good pick or will we try to develop a tools guy who may or may not hit?

But it's hard to say cuz we did sign some older guys and clearly have older guys we don't have great transition plan to - Trent, Evans, Kittle, Brendel. Impact players over 30 and no real guys of worth behind them. Hopefully Stribling gives us a WR1 candidate long term at least. So is the team looking ahead to 2027 to make a serious run or do they think we have enough pieces now to really go for it with those holes at S, LG? Guess we'll see in a week or so.

I had stopped checking on how Landon Robinson was doing for the Bengals cuz I didn't want to be bummed out if he was doing well...then the updates of the 53 man rosters started coming in and of course he made it and led the preseason in sacks and pressures

Dude was available in the 7th round too...
McKinney Jackson would be a nice addition

Yeah could be a Collins insurance pick up.

Wait until he plays a real game before crowning him.

Just for some context, here are various NFL preseason sack leaders over the years:

2025 - Austin booker
2024 - Daniel Hardy
2023 - Niko Lalos
2022 - Tashawn Bower (honorable mention to niner great ty mcgill, a half sack behind)

Now, him being a 7th rounder, anything he provides is gravy. But the odds of him turning out to even being a regular starter in the league are low, let alone some type of insane draft steal.

Sure they need to work hand in hand but at the end of the day lynch is responsible for the side of the house that needs to be rebuilt. 2 nd oldest team in the league. Year after year we suffer a catastrophic number of injuries, neglect needs and go with hunches at draft time, sign then extend low character head cases that don't see the field or walk off when they don't agree with a decision. The Ricky glass pick was stupid. Passed on oline and much needed secondary help for a guy that was a late second rounder at best and likely to be a 3rd rounder. Bad drafting, poor salary cap management, dependency on declining stars late in their careers have become the 49er philosophy. I think it's time for a new philosophy and that starts with a new GM. Will it ever happen… I doubt it.. will we win a championship if it doesn't?…I doubt it.

I'm only gonna comment on the cap statement and that's BS they have never mishandled the salary cap, idk where you're getting that from but it's pure BS
Thier cap managment makes them Draft Dependant. They keep kicking the can down the road and are approaching a cliff. Dead cap hits for players not here. 40m Hargrave, Jennings, Jorden Elliot, gross mates etc etc. so while you think it's bs, the facts are reliance on voided contract years and rolling hits takes us out of the running for top tier free agents. We are restricted to tier 2 players and past prime vets. This works IF you draft impact players. It fails if you miss on the draft. We are missing and cant afford tier1 free agent to fill needs. Win now philosophy that ain't working

What are you talking about? We have the most csp room in the NFL, and we are outside of top 10 in dead $$ this year.

Also, dead $$ is not an indicator of good or bad roster building itself. For example, the giants have one of the least amount of dead $$. What has it done for them?

Anyhow, plenty of teams use void years and eventually that $$ will always come due.
