Mike McGlinchey, Brandon Aiyuk - earned a second contract but was a b***h about it and beyond

Seriously f**k the picks and make some damn trades!!!

I disagree on McGlinchey. The 49ers wanted to keep him but Denver offered more money than Parage was willing to pay.

This past season, McGlinchey was very good for Denver. Ranked #18 among all tackles. He has had 8 seasons as a solid starter in the league.

McG was good run blocker but not a good pass blocker. I would argue they are fine with McKivitz there. He played much better last year so imo they did actually find value there in replacing him. They simply haven't found anyone else imo. No real tackle to groom behind them and our center and guards may as well be you and me out there. I know Puni was hurt most of last year so fingers crossed he bounces back this year.

That's the problem, he was good, not great. But he wanted to be paid great (can't blame him there). You don't draft an OT top 10 to be good, you draft them to be a great franchise tackle. McGlinchey was not that by any means.

2 Firsts for Crosby?

Not like the niners can draft in the first round anyways.

They haven't been ignoring it. They just haven't hit on some of their picks.

Mike McGlinchey - top 10 pick
Aaron Banks - early 2nd round pick

Both guys started for us but weren't good enough to get extensions with the team. I'm sure the team would've liked to keep McGlinchey but there were too many other priority signings to make.

We've done pretty well on developmental OTs in the later rounds - Colton McKivitz is the best example but Jaylon Moore got himself a very nice deal with KC and looked pretty good replacing Trent last year here. Even Skule was serviceable.

Burford was a failure but had some potential too.

I think the bigger issue is their ideology. That they can invest in traits and coach them up. Yes we've had some examples of this working but the issue is if you're missing on those early skill players/defenders and pushing down the OL talent your odds of success go down and your team is weaker for it.

McWiff, Banks, Moore and Burford are your draft wins? Did you type that with a straight face.

if they stay in the league its a win.
They drafted viable players.

Still to your point they have not done enough for the Oline. that is undeniable.

A lot of high misses. A lot of early hits with mid rounders etc, but lately not much at all and it's caught up to them.

I wish they would treat it like they just took over the team and rebuild the roster tbh. They have Purdy to build around on offense which is the most important piece. It doesn't help we compete in a brutal division.

Honestly it's the trades that they've made and late round gems that's keeping this team competitive. They're good at that so why not keep it going, make more trades.

Agree, and I dont understand that if you get an undrafted *starter* he's less than a first round pick starter. I mean Jordan Mason, Brieda, Bourne were starter level talent and a lot of fans just wave it off and insist that the 49ers are clueless on talent evaluations.

Another example is Brock Purdy. He's a pro-bowler that Trey was supposed to be, yet the 49ers *suck at drafting.* wow

I mean generally speaking, statistically you usually get starting caliber talent in the first three-ish rounds. Backups and developmental players after that (round 4 to 7 and UDFA). To me, if ShanaLynch gets a starter in the 7th round (Jauan Jennings) or in the UDFA (Brendel) then both are the equivalent of a day one or day two pick in my book.

O line has been a much better year unit year in and year out than the secondary has been. Wish they'd address both more. Too weapons focused.

Mckivitz wouldn't be a very good guard IMO.

Our safeties maybe the worst in the league.

Very likely they are.

not that they would've made big differences....

The problem is the discrepancy in the amount of resources they have thrown at DL & WR in the early rounds of the draft in comparison to the OL.

2017: (1a) Solomon Thomas, (1b) Reuben Foster
2018: (1) Mike McGlinchey, (2) Dante Pettis
2019: (1) Nick Bosa, (2) Deebo Samuel
2020: (1a) Javon Kinlaw, (1b) Brandon Aiyuk
2021: (1) Trey Lance, (2) Aaron Banks
2022: (2) Drake Jackson
2023: No 1st or 2nd round pick
2024: (1) Ricky Pearsall, (2) Renardo Green
2025: (1) Mykel Williams, (2) Alfred Collins
2026: (2) De'Zhaun Stribling

DL picks in first 2 rounds of Shanalynch era: 6
WR picks in first 2 rounds of Shanalynch era: 5
Other positions picked in first 2 rounds of Shanalynch era: 3
OL picks in first 2 rounds of Shanalynch era: 2

Hits (received 2nd contract from Niners): 3 (1 of which was Aiyuk who is ultimately a miss).
Misses (let go after rookie contract): 8
TBD: 5

We have misfired year after year on DL & WR not to mention the Trey Lance trade set us back tremendously. Purdy is the 49ers savior. If it wasn't for him, I think this regime would be done because any other GM/Coach doesn't survive that big of a miss.

What is mind boggling to me is Shanalynch's philosophy. I understand pass rush is high on the priority list but you are prioritizing players that you keep in a rotation. The OL is a unit that plays every offensive series! They are only subbed out if someone is hurt or you have such a nice lead you put the backups in. Imagine if we had drafted Wirfs instead of Kinlaw & Frazier instead of Pearsall (tbh hindsight 20/20 here because I really wanted Jackson Powers Johnson @ #1):

Trent / McKivitz / Frazier / Puni / Wirfs - Easily top 3 OL, maybe best in league.

Good post wolf.

I'm so over the 9ers drafts. Don't get me wrong I'm stoked about the 2026 draft. But Shanahan and Lynch's track record is pretty disappointing. That's why I'm like f**k the picks already!!!

You are not wrong. Draft picks are overrated in the NFL in my opinion. The problem with trades and FA is the salary cap.

No i didn't type that. Why don't you try reading slowly?

Draft picks are overrated only if you don't hit on them.

If you get yourself a Brock Purdy in the 7th, Tom Brady in the 6th, George Kittle, Puka Nacua in the 5th, Maxx Crosby in the 4th, Fred Warner in the 3rd then you slam open a SB window in a hurry.

Let's not forget everyone is screaming we have to get younger(I can almost guarantee you've said something along those lines here or on social media) you don't tend to get younger without draft picks.

Now we can argue that we need to draft better and hopefully this class gives us more to get excited about but good teams are always about balance with youth/veterans. Tho if your team can't draft well that SB window will shut in a hurry unless you have one of the best QBs of all time. Unfortunately we don't have that with Brock but he's good enough that if we just don't completely whiff on our drafts we can make playoff runs.

Me too.

Thats me being a fan though but I agree.

The only issue is using picks on a superstar is far more expensive on cap hits but this team hasnt done a great job with !st round picks.
