Nice, Lynch will now be able to f**k up bigger.

Gotta admit I laughed at that. Our most recent "big fish" were Hargrave and Farrell

Hargrave was good when he played. IMO it was dumb to give him such a massive deal given his age.

it's FA though. You're overpaying for everyone.
Grant Cohn rumor (take it with a grain of salt) SF is looking to make a trade for a WR and try to move up in the draft. One name they've had discussions for is Jordan Addison

Jordan Addison...the guy with the DUI and trespassing arrest....I'd think this team had learned its lesson on head case receivers by now.

Hard pass on Addison.

I think that is turning into a legitimate concern. People like to come in here and blast Lynch for the growing list of missed opportunities in the draft because he's the GM and, presumably, has a large say in who they will ultimately select. But he's not the one who is doing all of the player evaluations and so you start to wonder if maybe the team needs to reevaluate its scouting department and its process.

I think one of the most obvious fails of the last few years, in hindsight, was selecting Kinlaw over Wirfs. A guy who was barely able to stay on the field as opposed to a future All-Pro at a position of need. I think we all know that Lynch and Shanahan have put a huge emphasis on the D-line since they got here and it's part of their overall philosophy, create a defense that gets you off the field on third down, but they haven't actually been very good at it. Starting with the Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster picks.

I mean, they've obviously had some successes on that side of the ball. Lenior, Green and Stout aren't terrible, but are any of them future All-Pros? Before this last draft, I can't even remember a defensive lineman they've picked that's ended up being a difference maker, outside of Bosa. Hopefully, Williams, Collins and West, will change that narrative a bit.

As I said in another post, I think the time has come for them to really clean house along the defensive line. Get rid of Elliot, Davis, and Givens who seem like they've been with the team forever but aren't really difference makers. Let YGM walk, give Anderson and Valdez more opportunities and zero in on a D-lineman who actually can be a wrecking ball at this level if they're determined to go down that road again.

I realize that picking so late in the draft this year will limit their opportunities, but every year it seems like there are a few players who fall into the late rounds that end up being terrific, why isn't it our scouting department that finds them? Which isn't to say we haven't had some success there, but we seem to find more high value roll players than out and out stars, which is what the team needs right now.

Perhaps there's an argument to made for doing what the Bills did, kick their GM up to President of Football Operations and bring in a new GM, someone who has a legitimate track record in drafting impact players. I'm not saying every pick has to be a homerun, but at least one per draft would be nice. Go Niners!
Good post. I think both our talent evaluation and player selection processes need to be scrutinized and addressed. Our list of difference makers over the past five years has been meager compared to our rivals, and the talent on the team just seems to be rotting from the inside out. Couple that with poor contract decisions, tons of dead money, and poor FA signings… I think we need something fresh.

You can evaluate all you want but there are some things that are beyond your control. You can't prevent other teams from taking a player you want. That forces you to go to choice #2 or even #3. Maybe a positon that you didn't need as badly.

Another thing that you can't control is injury. Kyle addressed that somewhat in the press conference. How a high pick getting injurered early in camp not only affects his ability to develop but how it has a trickle down effect and forces you to go with players that didn't figure to be in a starting role. Pearsall is a classice example but there have been others. You can avoid drafting players that are already injured (loke Kinlaw) but there's no way to prevent them from getting hurt once they're on your team.
I would love to see the Niners do the opposite and trade back. Add some picks in the middle rounds and build up better depth. Would help against all the injuries. And since the team can't hit on early rounds anyway...

Yeah doesn't make sense to me based on past problems we've had. Could be super cheap though. Fits the bill as far as speed and separation goes

To me, the four key priorities are as follows:

1. Get a big name WR. I love Ricky as much as the next guy but his ceiling is always going to be WR2 if he can't play that often. It's time to replace the gaping hole Deebo/Aiyuk left us with. You fill that hole and it'll open up the offense quite a bit.

2. Get another DL. We can't rely on Bosa/Williams to stay consistently healthy all year. Keion White actually wasn't a bad pickup but we need more. We might even cut Huff because it saves us a lot of cap, but still, replace him with someone better.

3. Get a safety who can actually cover. Shouldn't even be that expensive. Our "sexy" draft prospects are not starting material, they make nice highlights every once in awhile but are terrible in coverage.

4. Get Trent's future replacement. I would've had this at #1 but Trent keeps insisting he'll play a lot longer, though I doubt it.

Whether it's by draft, trade or free agency, these should be top four priorities this offseason.
1a. Pass rusher. Period. Our sack numbers were an embarrassment last year. Our secondary becomes multiple levels better the day a legit pass rusher walks into the building.

1b. We all saw what happens when there is no threat to hold the Safeties back off the LOS. The run game suffers but also the short-mid passing game as well.

Which is BPA among those two will be the #1 pick.

3. A Free Safety type is a legit need but not at the expense of the other three. Yes, Safeties are not all that expensive. Should be a relatively easy fill.

4. This could jump to the top if that becomes the BPA.

I think I'm of a similar mind. I expect Seattle and LA to run this division for a few years, so we should try to divest now and plan a triumphant return on the heels of their strength.

Not when we've went 13-6 with a MASH unit. We right there in the mix and I think we will win the division next year

the thing about speed...is you need to utilize it. Brocks strengths are not throwing it deep. You need to utilize speed in other way. Deebo was perfect for Kyle because he had violent acceleration and also strength to break tackles. Raw speed has not historically been utilized in Kyles offense at WR since like....I dont know, either Goodwin here or Gabriel on the falcons ?

They need a legit pass rusher and some guys in training

Rams win it all, Stafford may be gone. The upstart seahawks will be schemed to death by every coach in the league.
