The 49ers have just 16 players from Week 17 of last year on 2017 opening day roster; an all-time record for roster turnover 1 year to next.

He's not totally off base. We had a very strong core with Staley and Ward, Armstead, Buckner who hadn't hit their potential. And handed the FO the keys on a silver platter with the #2 pick, most salary cap, etc.
Lynch overall has done well but we made some really inexcusable missteps in year 1 and beyond with very premium picks (overpaying a ton of complete trash FA, #2 pick on Thomas, 1st on Foster, #9 on McGlinchey, trading a 2 and 3 for Pettis, and Dee Ford, Kinlaw over the other studs available, McKinnon in FA). These mistakes cost us dearly in our SB runs when those picks / cap charges contributed 0, which is a big reason we're against the cap today.
49ers definitely either have or will need to change something about their process because outside Bosa who was just a gimme, they haven't really nailed any premium picks. I think they have strong scouting talents in their front office and are league leaders in capitalizing on later picks so perhaps they need to fire / mute some voices and amplify / promote others. If there is someone disproportionately responsible for our late draft hits we should make them GM and Lynch president. Can't lose them or the FO suddenly sucks.
This narrative is getting old. Thomas was a top 5 pick on literally every draft board, Foster was a known risk, and McGlinchey was the drafts top rated OT. McGlinchey has been above average, just not stellar. I find it funny that people expect every pick to pan out. These were not "inexcusable."
Overall, the niners have done a really nice job building talent and a ridiculous amount of depth at multiple positions. They have top players (potentially best in the league) at multiple core positions (DE, LB, TE, WR, LT & Center) - note I don't highlight RB, even though we appear to be an awesome RB shop. This was done in the draft and in FA. We got the best OT in football for a 3rd round pick (in the following year's draft)??
Also, you mentioned Armstead and Buckner, who needed several years to see their potential >> Kinlaw will have an opportunity to show his potential. We also got Aiyuk, who has been very good for a young receiver in the same round.
The niners are going to be competitive every year. We have good management, coaching, culture, etc. I'm not sure what else people want. We had like 15 years of dumpster fires with 3 years of Harbaugh, which had its own tribulations.
Great points, I totally agree!
