So far, maybe you could say that; however, the draft is far from over and the same goes for the offseason. Add in an improved year (IMO) at the most important position in football, QB, where I see Garoppolo really taking command of this offense and being just that much more comfortable with everything...and, just improving as an NFL QB. You also take into account improvement from Bosa now that he has his rookie year under his belt. And, who knows how much other younger guys on both sides of the ball will improve as they continue developing & playing in these respective schemes. By the time the season starts, I think this team has a great shot at being better overall than last year's team.
The above videos are auto-populated by an affiliate.
So we now have 4 years of sample size:

1st picks (1st rounders): 4 lineman (3 D, 1 O)
2nd picks (late 1st/early 2nd rounders): 3 WRs and 1 LB

It appears as though the Lynch / Shanahan model is draft D lineman early and WRs that can create RAC and take later draft fliers / trades / FAs for everything else. Shanahan believes he can scheme the Offense, but you can't teach game-breaking ability. And on defense, you put all your blue-chip draft stock on the line and let the rest sort itself out.

I'd say the potential to be better than last year is there. Now the players must step up to the plate.

Jalen Hurd and Trent Taylor are big ?'s, if we include them as part of this years' offseason, then we may have a big bump in our WR core. Going from a liability to a strength.

Let me ask the most important question, are the 49ers a better team today? Yes or no. I'm not so sure. I know Tampa, Seattle, Saints, are waiting in the wings. At best we filled some holes, but are we better? I don't think so, the "red shirts" whom Lynch spoke of come through.
i think we stayed the same. had we not got those guys last night.. we were worse... o line still a worry. still need a cb

Well we got younger and added more cap flexibility. I think we can expect a couple of the young corners to improve and hopefully they can find a little o line help on day 3

I recall Kyle saying you needed talent to play defense but you could scheme on offense.

That scheming on offense will be put to the test this coming season with no instant impact players coming in to help immediately.

Any players you'd trade a 2021 1st for in the early 2nd?

Maybe Ezra Cleveland or Josh Jones tackles but not likely.

Will having so few picks in this draft help our salary cap situation?

This plus trimming the fat (busts) off the roster after this season; S. Thomas/Goodwin/Pettis

While also upgrading some of our higher priced (& some older) free agents with next years draft picks; Sherman/Gould/Colman

Plus possible retirement: Staley

Kinda. But the picks they're missing were not significant cap hits. It's hard to see the cap #s associated with rounds 2-4 having any meaningful impact on this team.

Nobody would think this obviously. And why do think it was impossible that we'd be able to get Hopkins? That makes no sense. Hell, I would've traded the 13pick Buckner straight up for him.

That's nuts to trade the 13th pick or Buckner straight up for Hopkins, and then what? Who takes Buck's spot? We weren't getting Hopkins, Bill O'Brien coveted David Johnson, and took a lesser offer to get Johnson, we had no one to trade that Houston would have coveted, plus we don't have a 2nd-4th rd picks, so it wasn't happening. People need to quit thinking like Madden GMs, and start thinking how real NFL GMs think.

The real question is which DL will Lynch take next year and which WR will Kyle move up for. There's your formula for all future mock drafts. LOL

We're taking EDGE next year for sure. Dee Ford's bum ass knee isn't going to last the season

LOL. That counts as DL so that works.

The Niners now have THREE top-end DL on controllable contracts for multiple years, plus Dee Ford.

They can easily cut or trade Ford next offseason to wipe away his financial burden. That, coupled with Buckner's absence, means there will be plenty of cash to get Joey Bosa done.

I would imagine the Niners will use that late 2021 1st to get a deal done if need be.
