I think the initial quotes of "giving Gamble a chance to prove himself" is probably an edit and doesn't show larger context. Smart new leaders don't:
- start with a scorched earth approach unless the current infrastructure is completely inept; remember Peter King said that Baalke's draft wasn't what I thought it was; collaborative, so that means even if scouts thought there was a better pick, it was overruled by one guy
- so Gamble doesn't have too much influence over talent evaluation (because he's not sure just how loyal Gamble might be), bring in a trusted lieutenant who has credibility, day one, to challenge anyone's talent assessment
- humbly message to fans telling them he's eager to "earn their trust" clearly acknowledging the real doubts out there among the fanbase
As I read in the article on the first page by Michael Fitch, as he wrote so eloquently, "When inexperience is matched with self-awareness and the right amount of humility, the result can be greater than the sum of its non-existent parts." Those characteristics will take you a very long way in any profession. I'm pumped. The more I learn and hear about the guy, the more I really like what he's already doing and messaging.
As OTC said, winning is the final arbiter of success but I feel like there's someone who's GENUINE in the seat now that we know we had a fraud sitting there previously plotting to sit on the Iron Throne.
The reports about Gamble made it sound like the situation is unique when largely it is perfectly normal. You get a new GM, they generally don't start firing people in January.
They evaluate what they have and after FA and the draft are over they cut people loose and replace them as needed. I dont believe Gamble is on the hot seat anymore than the front office guys in Indy are, this is just the process and the only opportunity a new GM has to evaluate people they may not have any prior connections to.

Lynch just said in his interview that Jed assured him that he would stay out of the way and let him do his job

One thing that's stuck out to me is Lynch saying that Jed is so tires of losing and the drama in the building, said that Jed is ready to get out of the way and let them work.

We'll see......though if Lynch works out, Jed will get a lot of credit for hiring him, the very thing he has seemingly been craving.

I hope so, Paraag and Jed put Lynch and Shanahan in place, these are their hand-picked guys and I am hoping that means they will be allowed to make their own decisions.

Sorry, I'm kinda slow in the head this morning, but does that mean Baalke had a part in it too?

Just heard Lynch's entire KNBR interview right now - wow! VERY impressed to say the least. Just listening to the guy you know he gets it...football in general (obviously), the task at hand, the perception of the Niners to some, what he need to do to succeed (and said that involves surrounding himself with great people to help in areas where he has deficiencies, i.e., college scouting - Adam Peters), this being a historical NFL franchise and the desire to win (what he says trumps everything else - winning) to get it back to the level it was in the glory days...just very impressive. Some other highlights:
-Said he was well aware of the troubles within the organization and wanted to find out firsthand for himself with some very pointed questions during the interview process...said he also wanted to test what he'd heard about leaks by telling the team that he wanted to keep his candidacy a secret (also, for the sake of privacy for him and his family)...said he was impressed with that aspect - the way it unfolded as they kept it quiet - before he accepted the role.
-Said Jed has given him full resources to build whatever staff around him Lynch feels is needed, along with the right coaches, players in the draft and FA, etc. He said Jed wants to step back and let Lynch do whatever he feels is needed to get this team back to winning.
-Said Paraag would be there in a supportive role to help with the cap and contracts - said he's known around the league as one of the best at it - but Lynch said he himself would also be involved in that process to give his input, etc.
-Said he is well aware of what he doesn't know as a GM and thus, has already been working "full steam ahead" in talking with and starting to hire the right people to surround him (Peters to start - he mentioned he was a home run hire)
-Talked a little about his history with Walsh, Lott, Keena Turner and others from his Stanford days when Walsh was HC...you can tell he really respects the franchise's history and wants to do what it takes to build a winner regarding all aspects of the team - towards championships first and foremost, but also within the FO, the coaches, the players, the perception of the team overall, and in the community with the work the team does there.
All in all, he spoke for about 25 minutes - just a very personable, intelligent person. Looking forward to the days ahead with him, Shanahan, and other personnel, coaches, and players they bring in.

Agreed. It would have made me nervous as some hires do, fire anyone they think might threaten their power. I could have seen him firing Gamble, but of course keeping the scouting staff given Gambles previous relationship with Baalke and his history with the team. If anything Baalke will be a great alternative voice to get him savvy on the other side of the table; what didn't Jed and Paraag tell you that you need to understand - there's their side, there's Baalke's side and then there's the truth...
Standard operating procedure is that incumbent scouting staff is loyal to the organization until after the draft, then the new GM authorizes them to leave for new jobs if they are not wanted long term. Lynch is going by the book with retaining the current FO personnel. One of you said it best, that Lynch bringing in Peters to evaluate and lend his expertise to the process is the key move to start the in-house evaluation of the scouting department.
