Up yours Chris Ballard

Yeah, take that! SF not good enough for you? Then, you're not good enough for us, either.

the niners front office shake up was way overdue. this is going to be a football paradise again. not often do you whiff on a great coach and get a chance at another brilliant coach this soon

I hear you but I just don't think the GM needs to be out at practice directing players. He should tell the coaches behind the scenes and let them adjust the players.

This Peters guy seems like a good hire.

Yup just like harbs did, he's surrounding himself with great football minds creating a quality staff.

Once sunday is do I wonder who Kyle brings in as DC? That is gonna be a huge hire.

thats true but most GMs also dont have the HOF expertise of John Lynch lol. if he can help out that position group in any way or sit in on the DB/defensive meetings every once in a while, im sure his input wouldnt fall on deaf ears. he was one of the scariest safeties of all time and he knew how to get away with some heavy hits lol. im tired of seattle stretching the rules and beating the hell out of us physically while we try to be boyscouts. we need some toughness around here

Well to be fair Ballard didnt need to make a hire this quickly. Since well he already has the experience.

When did fairness ever rear it's ugly head in a forum?
let it play out and give them a chance , we have a good guy as a GM who is surrounding himself with good talent evaluators , We are getting a HC who is an excellent OC so , lets see where we go from here . Go Niners !

Yea the DC is the biggest hire left out there. I'm thinking somebody young that we might've not heard much about. Maybe one of Dan Quinn's understudies? Not really sure who is left out there.
Broncos fans think that Baalke will be the replacement for Peters in Denver.

I think once we got some more players with some dog and anger in then you will see the team play with an edge. We just don't have the players right now. Besides Bow it seems like all our defensive player are mild mannered quiet guys. We need some guys wiht some fire

That was a long running story on thr front page of this site. That Baalke would land in Denver once he was released from SF.

Brent Jones seems to think highly of John Lynch, which I guess is good:

"I like John Lynch," Jones said. "I like him personally a lot. He's a high-character, high-integrity guy. Obviously, a great player. Most likely going to be in the Hall of Fame in the next week."

Jones went on to say that, had the 49ers hired one of the general manager candidates from the Green Bay Packers or the Seattle Seahawks, it still would have been a gamble. "I do know this," Jones said. "[Lynch] is extremely bright and he's very forthright, an honest guy. I think we're going to get real information. But that doesn't really always matter. We want real players and that's a whole different skillset that I don't know any of those [other candidates] have absolutely proven at this point."

"I actually think he's going to really be great, but we're not going to know for a couple of years," Jones continued. "But he's got a lot of characteristics and a lot of great leadership characteristics in a person in a role like that."

100% agree with Brent here. At the end of the day, it's about player acquisitions for your HC's schemes (WCO + 3-4 defense) and setting up a winning culture and accountability.

He's already experiencing some culture shock but his media gig will help a lot with making SF attractive and transparent again. That's a big part of his job. He'll now be the face of the franchise and the torch will be passed off to him from Jed.

Key take-aways for me:

  • This is a Kyle Shanahan hire. Let's be clear about that! It sounds like he didn't even have to go through the interview process but requested it out of character. Good sign. But both careers will be tied to each other now. This is a huge risk for Kyle.
  • Everyone needs a mentor. John Elway is one of my good friends and I watched him. I was living in Denver when he went through that process.
  • Exposure. He was kind enough to invite me into the building for off season meetings and such. This experience gave him an opportunity to see, in part, how to manage people/processes within a FO...he brought me in, I went to the Combine, kind of did all of that."
  • Humility. "I would say that I'm eager to earn their trust." This is a good start. Everyone and their mother knows you have zero FO experience yet you're a straight shooter. The good news is that you've separated your ego and you're being a straight shooter about YOURSELF! That will go a long ways in earning respect in that building with people right now, far more qualified than you.
  • Convention. He's right in that when you are used to being in unconventional situations, this won't be too big for him. Life has a way of preparing you for the next steps. This is it. He and his family recognize that are are committed..."Jed was willing to think outside the box." Jed is in NO position to think outside the box but Lynch may just be the guy to make him look good anyhow, 3+ years down the road.
  • Workload. "We've got a big task in front of us, but I can't tell you how excited I am to attack it. I think the answer is there's so much to attack" I'm glad he has a true general idea of how large of a role he plays even if he hires a number of specialists (you still have to manage them/personalities/egos).
  • You are as good as the people you surround yourself with. "...very fortunate that there's really good people, some talented people that are from the staffs that preceded this one and they are doing a lot of really great work. It's critical also to put together the staff that I'm going to be working with and a lot of those people are going to be in the building, we're going to go out and aggressively pursue some of the people I have relationships with that I think are the best in the business. And so, we are going to attack it very aggressively. I will say for someone like Tom Gamble, he's got a ton of experience in this business and I'd be a fool not to sit down and soak that up and I'm eager to do that and like I said before, I'm very appreciative and I can't wait to communicate how appreciative I am to the people in the building that are working really hard while things are kind of in flux and very soon we are all going to all be working together.
  • Creating a vision. 'Here's who we want to be and here's the type of people we are looking for if you want to be a part of this thing.' I think everyone wants to win championships but in a lot of places, there's lip service being paid to the commitment to doing that. So, I think everybody that enters this building has to be single-minded in their mindset of that's what we're here to do. ...our community...forefront of the culture.
  • 12-14 hour days, not 12-14 hours a week. He's starting to get that already. "I can't get the film in front of me quick enough just to 1) evaluate this roster. I know it because I follow football on a broad sense, but it just takes time and there's no substitute for time and that's what, I think you first have to 2) take inventory of what you have to see what we need and that's with the 3) Draft and 4) free agency. "Well, I've had a phone married to my ear all day long. I didn't know that was part of this job, but it certainly is and so I've had a phone to my ear all day and I've been working hard to try to do that
  • Defined roles/partnership/marriage. "I think a lot of those things are specifics that we've got to get to the point where the final strokes (Trigger man for the draft and 90 man roster/Kyle the trigger man for the 53), ...true partnership. everyone's working in the same direction...we're likeminded in our pursuit of winning a championship." "I thought he (Kyle Shanahan) was the catch of this head coaching cycle."
  • Transparency. I don't want to make too many promises, the one promise I can make is of any team I'm going to be associated with, you're going to have competitive players that want to compete, that live and breathe football, that are going to play hard. If they don't play hard, we're going to find players that will play hard. They're going to do things right. We're not going to be perfect both on and off the field, but we're going to strive to be that and we'll be tough and physical and I'm getting excited talking about it right now. That's the kind of culture we're going to try to bring."
  • Long-term Commitment. "But, what I can tell you is the commitment that Jed and the 49er organization have shown to me to make this thing come to fruition has been incredible. They identified that they wanted it to happen. They gauged my interest. I got things right with my family. The commitment of resources.
  • Contracts. "Paraag's a guy that I'm really excited to work with in a number of roles supporting me and this organization. But, I report to Jed York and that's what I've been instructed. That's who I report to. I've negotiated my own contracts, I've been involved in those discussions, but I have not done that. And so, I feel real blessed that in our building, in Paraag, we have what numerous people have told me is one of the most skilled contract negotiators in the business. I'm excited about that."

He'll do fine as long as he isnt the final decision maker. They can even give him a prison style office down in the basement somewhere where he doesnt have to socialize with anyone, can watch endless film, do pushups and pullups and bang on the walls and scream to let the rage out.
