First round pick! Yeah!

And at the very least the Saints wanted him at that point too. Both teams recognized a top prospect with some red flag concerns who had fallen down the board.

Nobody complained at the time the pick was made seeing as he was thought of as a top 10 prospect.

The takeaway here really goes back to the beginning. When an extremely talented prospect , from Alabama, no less, gets kicked out of the combine....for mouthing off to a lowly x ray tech, or medical assistant...we should go no further. It was an early 'tell' but we dismissed it. Getting kicked out of the combine? Somehow i never heard of that before. But it sure should have told us , RED FLAG...do not proceed...or you will wish you had not done so in the near future.

A lesser flag was the "shoulder" hx, but added to red flag #1, now in retrospect, this is a NO GO forever into the future. Not saying lynch did bad...just saying there are red flags adn then there are RED FLAGS. You get a kid with double barreled flags....that is just absolutely 'no way Jose' ...in the future, i mean.

That is your takeaway. Hey , it's a start.

Doesn't matter what the saints wanted. Doesn't matter what the fans thought. Doesn't matter whar Adam Shlefter thinks either.

Bottom line is that it was a horrible pick in a very poor draft overall.

Why was it a horrible pick? Because of the character flags?

And the shoulder injury, which 18 months later is still very much an issue

Character + injury.

Getting kicked out of the combine is f**king retarded.

The 49ers have to have the worst luck of any franchise when it comes to drafting character. The Seahawks take Frank Clarke who beat the s**t out of a woman to the point she was begging for her life and hospitalized and he's a franchise cornerstone. The Chiefs drafted Tyreek Hill who choked, hit and threw his pregnant girlfriend down the stairs and he's a top 5 wr and reason they're playing so well. The 49ers spend a first round pick on Aldon Smith and Rueben Foster who didn't have any legal issues before the draft, become all pro type players and are cut before their rookie contract ends. How does this only happen to the 49ers.

Bad GMs
I thought the clear warning sign of how disastrous this franchise is happened when Chris Ballard told us to go f**k ourselves and took the Colts job.

Sorry 9ers, I'm going to an irrelevant franchise that has no Oline, no Dline, no LBs, no secondary, no RBs, Ty Hilton, and a franchise QB with a bum shoulder that may never be the same again. Have fun with hiring a TV analyst.
Since no more Reuben thread, will ask here. AB, help, please. What exactly are the financial arrangements in a firing like this? Do we owe Reuben full fare, or are contracts written so that for cause a contract may be cancelled? Asking out of ignorance.

This. That is almost unheard of. How can you get kicked out of a job interview? L. o. L

Then he goes and gets arrested for weed. Then DV. Then DV again. And is always injured.

Like the old saying goes, when people show you who they are, believe them.

Great points, but I'm not hanging them by the 2017 draft. It wasn't like Thomas was a reach or a surprise. If anything we've used and developed him wrong. (Still a reflection of the front office and coaches but you get what I mean). Foster was a risk, but it made sense at the time. We knew this might happen. Sucks but we understood the risk.

Witherspoon is meh imo.

Beathard is ok. Probably could have snagged him later, but not a horrible pick.

Kittle is obviously the best pick of the draft. Seems like a great kid too

Williams was a huge bust.

Taylor and Jones are ok picks. They contribute.

Don't know the next guy lol

Colbert was a steal. Solid backup at worst imo

I guess many would argue this is a very "normal draft" it's hard to even hit 30% success never mind 50% right?

The problem is the misses at the top. Usually aside reaching for a an the first round or two are guys who will start and play well.

That cannot happen again and it looks like they got it right this time around with McGlknchey for sure. Warner for sure as well. However Pettis looks like s**t imo and again, tough to miss on a 2nd rounder.

Bosa flags? You mean injuries. I'm not that concerned tbh.

Busting on 2 first 2 thirds and a 4th is not a normal draft for a rebuilding team by any means. I appreciate the explanation, but 2017's offseason was terrible. We knew the FA market would be weak so the need to draft well was even that more. Without Jimmy G in mid-2017, and it's been proven Hoodie gave him to us, I have no faith that we would have even picked a proper QB as a starter.

As an NFL exec, if you've busted 2 firsts 2 thirds and a 4th, that's not even close to average or successful IMHO and there should be some hand-wringing and hard conversations within the organization.

2018 draft looks a little better but we're at a super low standard if we're happy that we didn't bust or 1st rounder again.

Is it possible that we have too much power centralized in one person? That can't be the entire reason, but could it play a part?

You're right. I am being a tad lenient knowing they are all "new" to this.

People miss on the bottom and middle ally but the misses on top, as I said, are killing our growth.

I know I'm a broken record, but this offseason is make or break for John for sure. I'd argue him and Kyle need a hard look at their entire defensive philosphy too.

I'm expecting ~.500 play next season.

It was a risk that did not work out. All teams take risks at times, it only sucks when it does not work out. This definitely hurts.

We have seen a bunch of fans rail this FO for passing on players with character risks. And when we did take a red flag player the fan base was ecstatic at first and nobody was calling it a horrible pick. But now that it failed they want to throw stones at the FO using hindsight.

Where was that hindsight when we all sat here lauding the pick?

Blame that on the SF politicians.
