Millen had all the power and final say. It doesn't look that way for Lynch.Originally posted by Jcool:Originally posted by Ninerjohn:Exactly. This is a far cry from Matt Millen in my opinion.
How so? When Millen was hired he had Bill Tobin as Director of Player Personnel, he was the GM of Chicago and Indy (with the Colts he drafted Faulk and Harrison). So it wasn't like he was not surrounded by guys with experience.

lol too bad lynch isn't gonna have total control like Millen did....
If you compared their IQs, I'd bet Lynch would outperform Millen...just a hunch
I'd also bet Lynch knows that WRs at the top of the draft don't have as much value as RDEs and QBs.

Having Andrew Luck will do that for you.
That's why I'm actually loving the Kyle Shanahan hire. He knows what an uphill battle he has to get the 49ers franchise back to being a top 10 franchise. Shanahan isn't panicking on what he doesn't have or what kind of credentials a GM has or doesn't have.
People seem to be getting so worked up over the John Lynch hiring that they are forgetting that Kyle Shanahan will be coming to town, which is the bigger deal. IMO
Yeah Kyle saves this off-season. We got a nice prospect coach and football runs in his bloodline.
We just have to hope Lynch is a fast learner or he's actually been preparing for this moment.

Certainly...no question about it!

He has Paraag doing the cap, he will have personnel guys doing scouting, and somehow I dont see John having problems with the interview process. He is a smart guy and this isnt rocket science.
This. It'd be one thing if he had to assume ALL the traditional duties of a GM but he is in a situation where he will be able to lean on a lot of people, especially if Dominik and Hickey both join the front office. I think he can be a big help when it comes to FA, as well as being the point of contact for people around the NFL, instead of having to deal with Baalke or York, now you have Lynch handling all of that. I hope he succeeds.
It seems like on the surface, he's really being pushed into growing into a true President of Football Operations...essentially, becoming a General Practitioner where he'll have to gain enough information over various different topics WHILE having the true Specialists working under/for him. And if that is the case, this will still take years to learn IMHO. And like you said P, if he was doing it all like more traditional GM roles (contracts, all player acquisitions, hirings/firings, cap, analytics, scouting, etc.) then yeah, he'd need to become a specialist in each of these main responsibilities too...still taking years to hone. I don't think fans realize how much are on these GM's plates today.

It sounds like every one in the Football world is praising this Hire of Lynch. The only people I have seen be totally negative about it really are on this Forum or are part of the sea chickens fandom. Neither of the last 2 stated really know how things work behind closed doors or really know how Lynch is as person. In a year people will complain because we are not in the playoffs, in 2 years people will complain that we arnt in the playoffs. Give it 3-4 years. Let the REBUILD work and see. In that time you can eat crow or say I told you so but none of us know how great or bad this will actually be.

I'm also happy that the GM and HC will have some kind relationship and have known each other before they were hired. I'd hate to have another situation where the GM has a hard time seeing eye to eye with his head coach. Just imagine if Baalke and Harbaugh had the kind of the relationship where they trusted one another!!

Why would they interview Elway? Denver had a GM when he was hired.

He is the trigger man. But yes, he'll have a small village to help him, so it seems.

When will Lynch speak to the media or will they wait to do that with the new HC as well?

Of course this is the truth. and in my opinion as long as they are going down this road then you give a pink slip and show the door to every single coach on staff. including you know who. there are no sacred cows. there is no more being nice cuz he was a x niner from the glory days. there are no more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. you remove all of the stench from the past two regimes, burn some sage and incense and candles on a ouji board. hope to see blood running down the church walls and dogs forming in packs , dump every single so called quarterback on this roster and start from ground zero. you do not make a bold move like this and then p***yf**king foot around and say. well well. rathman should stay, such and such should stay. i believe in guilt by association and any one who had anything to do with what has happened to our team should be dispatched into the 7th level of hell. i also have no pets. i hate anything that loves me unconditionally

Do you know how many teams have "hired a first time HC"? What a ridiculous statement, no offense.
Every team in every league uses analytics.

What I'm looking forward to the most is Lynch's interactions with the media. The Killion's, Kawakami's, Ratto's of the world. Hope he's ready for that. (Although I expect them to attack Jed mostly)
