Lynch called up Shanahan and offered to be his GM. Shanahan wanted Lynch. The 49ers gave the HC the guy he wanted.

Listening to his broadcast partner Burkhardt, it makes the hire seem a little more intriguing. Burkhardt claims Lynch watched Aaron Donald on film in college and tabbed him as a future star way before anyone had ever really started talking about him.

Interestingly, he also stated that Lynch has been behind the scenes working towards getting a GM sort of opportunity since his playing days ended, apparently. Burkhardt says Lynch has been studying the process for years and was just waiting for an opportunity before deciding to leave FOX.

Don't really have a reason not to believe him after listening to that, but it's just kind of odd. It sounds like he's saying Lynch could've gotten into scouting if he wanted to but instead stuck to the booth.

Its almost like this is common-place practice when a new GM is hired. Everyone in the front office has through the draft to prove that they are worth keeping. Gamble won't be running the draft and he won't be graded on the results of the draft, which of course two days after the fact will be too early to tell but he will be graded on his knowledge, work ethic, quality of scouting reports, how he fits the team philosophy, how he works with other front office staff and the coaching staff.....etc.


This is far from unusual.

So who do you think will run the draft?

York should have told the boy that he won't get everything he wants. Unfortunately York does not have the balls to do so.

I've made it to page 102 in this thread, will read the remaining 30+ pages later tonight. I'll stand by my post earlier this week that said this place is full of chicken littles--anyone who say they saw the York's making this kind of hire is lying. You can say they botched it or whatever but that simply isn't the case, Shanahan brought Lynch in, not the Yorks.

There was mutual interest in Paton working with Shanahan, you don't do 2 interviews with the second being a 2 day getaway with a dinner followed by business talk. I saw a post that said they should've gotten Paton to be GM, made Lynch VP of Ops, and Dominik as VP of Personnel.

My guess is that what was being discussed and why the wanted to spend so much time together but any one of the 4 involved parties ended up saying no to the arrangement. Paton's agent and the Yorks probably talked about how to handle the announcement with the least amount of damage being done (i.e., Paton "withdrawing" may cause the same perception as the GB guys caused, that they ran away screaming, even though every reasonable person knows it is because they sensed they weren't the main candidate and bowed out or the Yorks making Paton look like he was a castoff). IMO - this is why McDonough was strung along for the final interview, they probably got told by Shanahan about Lynch and they wanted to see if McDonough would be interested in that arrangement still rather than being a straight across GM. McDonough probably said no to the idea because it wouldn't be a full jump up the ladder and it would be a division rival.

Shanahan, not only co-signed the hire, but him and Lynch made the move together and again IMO I think Shanahan saw a chance to bring in a guy that would 100% not be a mouthpiece of the Yorks since he wasn't an original idea of the Yorks. This is an attempted failsafe by Shanahan to further tie himself with the GM and keep them in the saddle for the 4+ years that York seems to have promised.

So everyone can bitc& about the fact they didn't hire a rising FO star, then you can bitc& about him not being a "successful" businessman like Elway or Young is lying to themselves (Elway's original dealerships were nothing but a naming rights licensing deal, his latest venture is tied to an investment group that has many stakeholders that are far more focused on it than Elway), Young would be more viable of a comparison but again not much else to brag about. But at the end of the day, this is a hire that knows football and him and Shanahan WANT to be together, it isn't the best ideologically but it is the best relationship so I'm for it.

Excited to see who the Personnel guy is and how they all evaluate Gamble's future with the org. Very excited for the springtime...

Lynch sounds like a good dude, a very bright guy with a lot of good contacts across the NFL, I really hope this does work out. Would be kind of awesome to have a guy that was coached by Bill Walsh taking the organization back to winning again.

This is not a new thing or something exclusive to the 49ers. It is common practice when hiring a new GM.

Normal practice is having a new GM that actually knows whats going on.

You have one guy fighting for Watson and another fighting for Trubisky, what basis is Lynch picking one over the other? Now expand that to 7 rounds and UDFA's.

Thank you! Why are people actually trying to sell this f**kery as anything but? Lynch had never done ANYTHING related to the position to warrant faith that he'll do a good job so those of us that are worried have every reason to be. This ownership hasn't given us anything to have faith in.

Everyone always throws around the Steve Young name around, but to my recollection, I've not seen one report where hes actually stated that he WANTS the job. Maybe he's just happy with his family and wants to be low key.

Apparently some people have fully grasped the idea that Shanahan picked Lynch, not York.

Kyle could have easily picked Steve Young as well, considering his relationship with Mike.

I just don't think Steve actually wants the job.
