I wonder if Kyle S. Would consider Brent Venebles from Clemson for DC, the dudes posted top 10 defenses in the NCAA for the last 12 years with two different teams. He did it last year after 7 starters left for the NFL. I think he has the chops

My vote is for Ed Donatell he mostly has a 4-3 experience, but I'm sure he picked up some 3-4 concepts being with Vic for the last 6 years.

Per sources, the Texans are promoting LBs coach Mike Vrabel to defensive coordinator. Romeo Crennel expected to stay, likely as ass't HC.

This was one of the main reasons why he turned down the DC job here last year. Texans have a great D and Vrabel was the heir apparent for DC their.

We need more ex niners that were brilliant players to come back. Tom Rathman can't be the only one that showed interest. We all know Jeff Garcia wanted to be involved. What about a guy like Patrick Willis? Not for DC, but involved somehow. Dude was a true student and things didn't work out so well in the tech world for him. I'm just saying there's got to be brilliant ex players looking for a shot.

I think we'd be well served to bring in an experienced DC, possibly even one with HC experience. If we could get Mike Smith I think that'd be great. His experience and demeanor would be a nice balance with Shanahan.

Also, I don't think we really need to worry about whether this new DC runs a 3-4 or a 4-3. We've got so much rebuilding to do I think we could go in either direction. Actually I sometimes wonder if we're fewer pieces away from being a good 4-3 team....

Who we drafted with our last two #1 picks should matter. If the new staff tried to round peg a 4-3 into our 3-4 square hole, it would be huge mistake.

This it mostly definitely matters who we drafted and how this team was built when it comes to a 4-3 vs 3-4.

Another strong candidate to join Shanahan's staff as defensive coordinator is Falcons' secondary/senior defensive assistant Marquand Manuel. Manuel played eight NFL seasons as a defensive back and worked with Falcons coach Dan Quinn at the University of Florida, then Seattle before moving onto Atlanta.
