Newberry made a great point last night. If Kaep gets hurt during the regular season and decides to have surgery just before the 2017 season starts we are in the hook again for $$$$. If he's not the starter, which feels like he doesn't want to be anymore then his contract needs to be taken care of now not later.

Might as well dump Ailington also.

I think since we haven't used Kelvin Taylor much, Harris makes it, and Taylor is put on the PSquad(if clears waivers)

I don't think so...he has become a distraction, we have seen what his talent has eroded to , and I'd bet all I have in my billfold, $5 bucks that Chip has said "No mas...don't want that joker sabotaging my team. Get him gone". If it didn't happen, then it is in the making. Look at chip's past hx. Two guys got smart in Philly, and ...adios. Very lilkely to happen here. And don't think Chip wasn't offended by one of his players sitting for the country's anthem. And while at it, I bet that isn't the face that Trent wants plastered on this team either. Bet my house that this is Jed's thinking. So when it comes to Kap...he has managed to descend to 4th best QB...there are lots of football reasons for making the move. The rest....well use your imagination. So we eat this yrs salary. Small price to pay for everyone on the same page on the sidelines and in the game.

No offense, but seems like you're projecting your own feelings onto Chip. Like, very hard.

First, this is not the first game of the preseason that Kap did this, just the first time media noticed it - so if Chip hasn't had problem with it before, why would he now ?
Second, I think it was not-so-subtly mentioned numerous times before that Chip has very little to none personnel power. Baalke calls the shots.

This is a good point, but if he isn't playing, the only way he can get injured is in practice.

Yup. Do what Washington did last year with RGIII. Keep him inactive on gamedays, get through the year, cut ties in the off-season.

I think that's still a risk. Injuries can happen anywhere and if they happen at "work" you as the employer are on the hook to deal with it.

If we're rebuilding then it's time to cut the fat if we have a comparable substitute.

In all honesty, he probably was a top 4 WR on this team, but I understand the decision to cut him. This WR group is poor, and Simpsons' presence on the roster wouldn't do much to improve the situation.

We're better off keeping as many young guys with upside as possible and hope somebody emerges. We knew what we had with Simpson, and it really wasn't all that much. This opens up a spot to keep a guy like Anderson, Burbridge, Cajuste, Treggs...etc.

This. When rebuilding and in doubt...go with the younger player.

Agreed. Hopefully we can trade for a young receiver sometime soon

If Kap was lighting it up in the preseason and training camp, I think this would be a different story. Same would be said if he had cemented himself as a good starting quarterback over the last couple years. I'm a total Kap homer, but if a backup QB (and that is all he is projected to be at this point) is making waves in the media and likely doesn't have the locker room backing him up, I would be leaning toward a trade at minimum and potentially cutting the guy.

Back to the OP, I'm not terribly surprised at the Simpson cut. I think I wanted him gone last year. I would much rather let the young guys try to step up. Simpson has talent, but he doesn't run exceptional routes and his hands are questionable. I truly believe his drop on that third down play was the last straw with Chip. That was a catchable ball and if a guy wants to be a starting WR in the NFL, that catch has to be made.
