Just looking at that lineup, can you imagine what a malik Jackson, or wilkerson, or even a Trevathan would have done for that group? same goes for sean smith. Dang, how i would like to have seen just one of those guys in our uniform.

Jackson and Wilkerson was wishful thinking but damn, just adding SS and/Trevathan would have been big especially SS as I think Hodges could become a good TED next to Bowman.

With there being everyone returning on Defense, this defense can only get better...The main thing that needs to improve is the pass rush, Aaron Lynch can't be the only one...Hopefully Harold or Carradine can fill that void this year

They have talent, there all young, but don't have the experience..I'm not saying were gonna be a dominant Defense, but with everyone returning, and having 12 picks to fill in some depth this D will be much better..Chemistry out does talent

Hard to say...outside the ass-whooping our young defense took in week 2 and 3 that killed our 'points against,' this defense was hovering around 10th in points the rest of the year and that's pretty good for a very young defense with only one veteran in Bowman and even he was coming back from his own issues. Throw in an overly complicated scheme, green coordinator and rotating CB's and a late in-season signing in Hodges and a large number of injuries (again), etc. the fact that they were able to lead the NFL in defense at home is a pretty good start to their young rebuild. The natural expectation is to grow even more in year 2. That said, we NEED the talent in Harold (WILL) and Carradine (Elephant) to elevate our pass rush. That is badly needed obviously. We need AA and Dial to take that next step as well...Hodges and Bowman together with Bowman even more healthy/explosive now, Ward back to SS hopefully, etc. So talent-wise it might be there already but just not realized yet in their first year. Obviously, grabbing a Sean Smith, Danny Trevathan and a pass rusher (whether at DE or OLB) could have gone miles to improving each unit and overall defense but who knows, maybe a couple of these key youngsters will rise this year to that level of play. Fingers crossed as I never count on a rookie elevating a unit like some here do.

They have some talent but they need more. I like Williams, and Armstead but the rest of the dline man are back up players. And Armstead is still developing. Lynch is solid but that's where it stops concerning OLB'ers. Bowman is the man but Hodges and Whilhoite are at best average players. All the CB's are average. I like our safeties. You need some talented players and let them create chemistry with each other. All the chemistry in the world with average at best talent won't get you very far. So do you think the absence of pass rush, forced fumbles, and big plays on defense had more to do with chemistry over the loss of Willis, J Smith, Raymac, and Aldon? We don't need anymore depth. We need difference makers

What's up with this report Ian Williams might not play in season opener. That ankle has me worried after we forked over $30 million.

He failed his physical because of two unreported ankle surgeries since the season ended (all contract agreements are not enforced until a physical is passed). Therefore, the 5-year contract offer was voided/rescinded, and he signed a 1-year deal that is worth up to $6 million pending incentives.

I am a huge defensive fan, I'm not excited about 2016 with this DC, D line, and OLB core.

hopefully we draft at least 4 studs to toughen up our front 7 , this will make our DB's better with a meaner pass rush ...which is why I'm not against drafting Buckner if he's there at #7 , a solid front 7 will go a long way towards building a brick wall to defend the run ...I can picture Armstead and Buckner wreaking havoc together, two big 6'7 sledgehammers hammering away at opposing lines and keeping our LB's clean and in position to make plays

Just saw the highlight reel on Buckner on ESPN. Much as i want him, just don't see him making it down to #7. Guy just can't last that long. His highlight reel is well, spectacular, and he is made for 3-4 D. If both QBs gone, then Stanley might be there.

"It takes two yrs to learn my D, as it is very complicated." Why would a DC say that, let alone brag about it? It is fair to say on D we are no better than we were last yr...i.e. We lost a yr. Specifically due to our former DC, now departed. We had a green D, what's-his-face knew it , and yet he forces those guys to learn a very complicated D? Brilliant. Effectively, our D lost all last yr. Just having mangini gone is a positive. Add to that tomsul...and we got one heckuva lot better just by those two jokers no longer being here. Addition by subtraction. Not many teams can get instantly better by the forced departure of two of their top coaches....but we did.

Yep, addition by subtraction in this case. But as noted above the D did get better last year, and showed they had promise, particularly in home games. That means (to me) that talent was there that wasn't bring utilized properly.
