Niners hire Jim O'Neil as DC

Let's see if I've got this right. Thanks to Thl and his usual fantastic breakdowns, this one on O' Neil's D sets and schemes, it appears that we may not have had the CB personnel his D requires. So, this guy who works for Chip, told him what he needed, and Chip then chatted with baalke. We then end up with 3 CBs in mid rounds, 3,4 and one later, who have speed, length, and coverage skills between them that will fit in O'Neil's D sets. Basically, more guys for press , or man coverage.

So here is the question. Guys who have complained about baalke and his draft, now have this to contend with:

Best DL/DE in the draft

Best OG in the draft

3 CBs who are good in man coverage

2 later OTs to add guys for rotation...in a line slot where we were really thin. And Pears, devey, nor Martin have made a case for a job this yr, devey already gone.

Also via draft, UDFA, or FA, we got a starting OG(Beadles), CFL's best WR, a potential rotational RB, plus a 6th Rd wish and hope QB.

A sweet DT passrusher who will almost surely be part of the DL rotation.

Looking at that list, it appears that Chip got in draft the starting DT/DE we had to have on D, the best OG in the draft, 3 CBs to help out O'Neil's D sets, RB help for O, WR help for O, and extra DLs and OLs. With that in mind, it is hard for me to understand the complaining about Trent's draft job. When one looks at the holes that were filled and the guys needed on D for ONeil to play his game, plus the incredible quality of many of these guys, I fail to see the beefs about Trent and the job he did this yr. I think there were some that didn't understand the CB picks on a team that already has a bunch of them....but after watching Thl's tutorial on JoN Defense, it is obvious we needed CBs wth different skill sets.

The farther we get down the road from draft, the better I am liking it. I was one that didn't care for the CB picks in mid rds, when there was so much DL and OL talent to be had. Yet, now it is obvious, Trent was drafting for not just Chip on O, but JoN on D. Add that to the Beadles, Rogers, add ons, plus Burbridge, and my B- climbed to an A-. Now that I see where the CB needs were, this was a solid A grade and we haven't even seen one snap yet. Mr. Trent, one word...impressive. Thanks to Thl for the breakdowns on JoN's D....and for showing why we needed some more and different talents at CB.

This right here - all of this. An EXCELLENT, well thought out and extremely knowledgeable post about football and what the Niners are doing. Posts like these are the reason I visit NT.
ONeil has a better d line in Santa Clara then he ever did in cleveland. Lets see how this pans out.

Armstead and Buckner will be monsters. Our secondary looks good. Too bad our LBs suck but we can only do so much in one off season.

This is why 49er fans are so much better than Eagle fans. You guys think with your head instead of your emotions and realize you can't fix everything in one year. There's no doubt in my mind that Chip would have fixed the OL for the Eagles if he stayed. Chip said all last year you can't fix everything in a year. He was adamant about not reaching for an OL in the draft when there were better players available at each draft pick.

The optimistic view:
Bowman = all-pro
Hodges = improving, under-rated, 4th rd, good in pass coverage, was QB/S and still learning LB, may be pulled in nickel
Wilhoite = good back-up

Lynch = excellent, still improving
Brooks = good for one last year
Carradine = looks very good as nickel OLB, might be a great pass rusher
Harold = looks very good, 'arrow up'

I also like the draft, except it seems like the CB's in rd 3 and 4 may have been a bit 'over-drafted'. esp. Robinson in rd 4

I think the team is going to use a cover 1, press, man under base. It's agressive and a lot rides on the guy who calls the plays to have a good idea of what the other team is trying to do.

Who is the team's cover 1deep safety? Reid is a solid player, but does he have the range to cover that much ground?

This is a good question. I don't think Reid has enough range to be a good Cover1 safety. I would like to say Ward because the hype around him on draft day was mini Earl Thomas. That's a hefty label to live up to, but their build and game seems similar. Quick, smart, plays bigger than he is. In the past, Fangio seemed to switch around who his Cover1 safety was whether it was Reid, Bethea, and even Whitner. Mangini preferred to use Reid whenever he dialed up Cover1 if I recall correctly. .

But didnt you said in the other topic that the deep safety usually leaves the weakside corner on an island? Does it make the safety job easier?

Yeah less area to cover does make it easier. I wasn't thinking about that when I wrote the above. It doesn't always happen though. Only when the WR is lined up outside the numbers (plus split), with the ball marked on the far hashmark. This makes it a very far throw (width of the field).

I have not seen much about these two in camp. I hope they are coming around. It would be a huge addition to the defense. This defense will need to rotate a lot of players to keep them fresh.

I had no idea he was a QB/S. Wow, he is a decent ilb.

Interesting: @MichaelWilhoite says new @49ers defense more similar to what SF ran in '14 than under Eric Mangini in '15 @SiriusXMNFL
Mods.. Question.. Anyway you can put a word in so articles on the zone have the authors names showing? I'd love not to give TK or any Cohn a click on accident

Been brought up a hundred times. Sometimes it happens for a couple days, but it never lasts.
I'm actually super excited about this defense. We have so many good players on the line. I actually like Hodges a lot. He played fairly well when given the opportunity. While we lack depth at ILB, we have it at OLB. The pass rush should be so much more disruptive this year. Secondary is solid, not fantastic...but it doesn't have to be if the pressure is there. I love where this defense is headed. Could have some growing pains, but starting in 2017, could be top 12 unit. And finally fantasy football relevant again!!

I noticed that too.

But it also gives a (good) WR plenty of room to maneuver, does it? I.e., IF the DB fails, a TD is a probable outcome.

Interesting. I believe thl alluded to the points that there are elements to both (some Fangio, some Mangini) actually but that's interesting MW thinks it mostly resembles Fangio's scheme overall.
